Open-Source AI Security Tools for Vulnerability Scanning: What to Look For

The right open-source AI security scanner depends on what you are testing. A base model, chatbot, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) application and tool-using agent expose different boundaries and failure modes. Compare tools by target scope, attack families, integrations, data handling, repeatability and review workflow—not by the label “AI security.” A scan produces sampled evidence under a particular configuration; a clean result is not proof that an application is secure.

What an AI vulnerability scanner actually tests

AI vulnerability scanning is a family of tests rather than one standardized operation. A scanner may send adversarial prompts to a model, exercise a chatbot through its API, place hostile text in retrieved documents, or test whether an agent can be manipulated into unsafe tool use. Those activities can overlap, but they do not establish the same security properties.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, a model-level test can reveal jailbreaks or harmful responses while never reaching your retrieval permissions, session handling or tool authorization code. Conversely, an application-level test can expose a prompt-injection path that a standalone model probe cannot see. Define the boundary before selecting a package.

Start with the system boundary

Base model

The target is the language model itself, usually through a local runtime or model API. Typical questions include whether it follows jailbreak prompts, emits harmful content, leaks memorized information or behaves unsafely under adversarial instructions. A model scan does not automatically test the application that wraps it.

Chatbot or model-backed interface

Here the scanner interacts with an endpoint that may add system prompts, conversation history, moderation and authentication. Test harnesses need the endpoint format, credentials and any rate limits. A scanner that can connect to a model is not necessarily observing every middleware control in this interface.

RAG application

A RAG system retrieves documents before generating an answer. Its threats include direct prompt injection in a user message and indirect prompt injection carried by a retrieved document. Data disclosure can also arise from retrieval filters, tenant isolation or citations, so the harness must exercise the retrieval path rather than only call the underlying model.

Tool-using or agentic application

An agent can plan, call tools and act on external systems. Assessment must include the agent description, conversation flow, tool permissions, confirmation steps and side effects. A prompt that merely produces an odd answer is different from one that causes an unauthorized database query or transaction.

Comparison of documented open-source options

The following comparison reflects documented capabilities, not an effectiveness ranking. OWASP AI Exchange lists PyRIT, garak, Prompt Fuzzer, Guardrail and Promptfoo as open-source generative-AI red-teaming tools; that list is a starting point, not proof that their scope or maintenance is equivalent.

Tool or project Documented target emphasis Documented attack examples Integration and data considerations Repeatability and review
garak Language models and chatbots; target adapters include local Hugging Face models and API-style integrations. Selectable probe families; the exact set changes with the installed version. Target and probe configuration are explicit. The documentation does not establish one universal data-handling policy, so inspect each adapter and provider path. Produces a report for a configured run. Preserve configuration and inspect individual prompts and responses; broad coverage is not implied by a narrow probe selection.
Giskard open-source scan library Agentic applications, including chatbots and RAG systems, described through their interactions and agent setup. Prompt injection, direct adversarial prompts, multi-turn jailbreaks, suffix injection and harmful-prompt datasets. A language-model provider generates adversarial scenarios and another model role judges replies. The provider receives the supplied agent description and conversation messages, but not source code, secrets or tools unless you include them. Generated vulnerability scans can be converted into explicit checks and replayed in saved suites and CI. Human review remains necessary because sampling and LLM judging can miss or misclassify failures.
PyRIT Red-teaming framework listed by OWASP; exact target and connector coverage depends on the scenario and version you adopt. Microsoft documentation includes a Garak-derived latent-injection scenario in which a malicious instruction is planted in a document the model is asked to read. Provider, connector and scenario data handling must be checked for the particular setup; a universal policy is not established here. Use it as a scenario framework and retain reproducible attack transcripts. No apples-to-apples effectiveness result is established.

garak: configurable probes for models and chatbots

garak describes itself as an LLM vulnerability scanner for discovering weaknesses and unwanted behavior in language-model systems. Its documentation describes scanning a chatbot or model, selecting probe families and configuring targets. Listed target paths include local Hugging Face models and API-style integrations.

This makes garak a candidate when your primary question concerns a model or model-backed interface and you need control over which probes run. Configuration is central: selecting only one probe family cannot be presented as coverage of every AI threat. The available generators, target adapters and probe set can change, and the garak documentation identifies itself as a work in progress. Confirm the package version and the matching documentation before building a test plan.

When garak fits

  • You need to exercise a local model or a documented model/API endpoint.
  • You want to choose probe families rather than run one opaque score.
  • Your team can build or adapt a harness for the interface and review generated reports.

What garak does not establish by itself

  • That retrieval permissions, authorization, storage or tool execution are secure.
  • That an unselected probe family was covered.
  • That a clean report is a certification or a guarantee against future prompts.

Giskard’s open-source library: generated scans plus explicit checks

Giskard’s open-source Python library is designed for testing and scanning agentic applications, including chatbots and RAG systems. Its workflow distinguishes a generated vulnerability scan, which searches for unknown failures, from explicit checks that encode expected behavior and can be replayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented vulnerability-scan guide includes direct prompt attacks, indirect prompt injection, multi-turn jailbreak techniques, suffix injection and harmful-prompt datasets. The scan uses a language model to generate adversarial scenarios and another model role to judge the replies. That provider arrangement is a security and privacy decision, not an implementation detail.

Data sent to the judging and attack models

Giskard states that the scan’s language-model provider receives the agent description and conversation messages supplied to the scan. It does not see your source code, secrets or tools unless those are included in the supplied content. Review prompts, retrieved passages, tool schemas and conversation transcripts for credentials, personal data and proprietary material before running the scan.

Turning discoveries into regression tests

When a generated scenario exposes a real failure, encode the expected safe behavior as an explicit check. Save the check in a suite and replay it after prompt, model, retrieval or tool changes. This separates exploratory discovery from the smaller set of failures your team has verified and must prevent from returning.

Why indirect prompt injection deserves a separate test

Direct injection places the hostile instruction in the user’s message. Indirect injection hides it in material the system reads, such as a retrieved document, web page, email or uploaded file. Microsoft’s PyRIT documentation gives a Garak-derived latent-injection example: a malicious instruction is planted inside a document that the model is asked to read.

Include both forms in your plan. A direct-only run can miss a RAG failure in which the user’s request looks harmless but a retrieved passage tells the model to disclose data or ignore its system instructions. Test whether the application treats retrieved text as untrusted data, preserves authorization boundaries and prevents the model from converting document content into tool commands.

A practical selection process

  1. Write the boundary in one sentence. State whether the target is a base model, chatbot endpoint, RAG pipeline or agent with tools. Record which components the harness can actually observe.
  2. Map threats to concrete attack families. Choose the families relevant to the application: direct and indirect prompt injection, multi-turn jailbreaks, suffix attacks, harmful outputs, information disclosure and misuse of agency. Do not infer coverage from a product name.
  3. Confirm target integration. Check local-versus-hosted execution, model or API compatibility, authentication, request format, rate limits and expected run time. A scanner that supports a local model may require a different adapter for your production endpoint.
  4. Trace every data path. Identify which provider generates attacks, which provider judges responses and what conversation, retrieved text or agent description leaves your environment. Redact secrets and sensitive records before testing.
  5. Define the evidence you will retain. Store the scanner version, model and provider, target build, probe or scenario selection, prompts, responses, judge rationale and timestamps. Without that context, a later run is difficult to compare.
  6. Convert confirmed failures into checks. Keep exploratory findings separate from accepted regression tests. A check should state the input, the expected safe behavior and the condition that constitutes failure.
  7. Run suites in CI and review exceptions. Replay saved checks after changes, then investigate each new failure and each surprising pass. Use a human reviewer for security-impacting conclusions.

How to judge scan results

Read the transcript, not only the grade

For every finding, inspect the attack prompt, the application’s full response, any retrieved context, tool calls and the judge’s rationale. Determine whether the behavior violates your policy or merely matches an allowed test case. Automated judges can produce false positives and false negatives.

Distinguish a sampled miss from proof of safety

Giskard explicitly warns that a clean run is not a certificate. Its scan samples attacks, so a miss means that the particular sampled attacks did not produce accepted failures under that configuration. The same logic applies to any scanner: untested prompts, data paths and application states remain unknown.

Check reproducibility

Re-run a suspected issue with the same target build and configuration. If the outcome changes, record model temperature or other generation settings, provider changes, conversation history and rate-limit effects. A reproducible failure is easier to fix and more valuable as a CI regression test.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Testing only the base model: add endpoint, retrieval and tool-path tests where those components exist.
  • Calling a narrow probe run “full coverage”: publish the exact probe and scenario selection and identify untested families.
  • Sending secrets to an external judge: inspect and redact agent descriptions, prompts, retrieved documents and transcripts; use an approved provider or local model when required.
  • Trusting one automated score: review transcripts and expected behavior, then preserve accepted failures as explicit checks.
  • Ignoring version drift: pin or record package versions and verify documentation labels before comparing runs. garak’s documentation notes that it is still being developed, and Giskard documentation is organized by library generation.
  • Testing without authorization: run against systems and data you are permitted to assess, especially when agent tools can change records or contact external services.

Choosing between garak and Giskard

Choose garak first when the immediate target is a model or chatbot and configurable probe families and target adapters are the main requirement. Choose Giskard’s library when you need an agent or RAG-oriented workflow that combines generated adversarial scenarios with explicit, replayable checks. A team may use both: model-focused probes can complement application-level scenarios, provided the boundaries and data paths are documented separately.

Neither choice replaces threat modeling, authorization review, secure retrieval design, tool least privilege, logging or human investigation. The absence of an independent apples-to-apples performance benchmark means you should not assign a hit rate, coverage percentage or ranking that the documentation does not establish.
