Open-source coding agents become safer when two different controls are designed together: permission rules decide which actions are allowed, denied, or paused for approval, while a sandbox boundary limits what the agent process can technically reach. Neither control is sufficient by itself. An approval prompt cannot protect files the process can already read, and a sandbox does not tell you whether an individual shell command should require review.

This guide explains how to evaluate and deploy open-source agents using those two layers, with concrete examples from OpenHands and OpenCode V2 and security guidance documented by OpenAI. Treat every result as configuration-dependent: the same project can have very different risk depending on whether it runs locally, in a container, on a remote host, or without isolation.

Permission rules and sandboxing solve different problems

Approval policy controls decisions

A permission policy answers: “Should this operation proceed automatically, be blocked, or wait for a person?” Typical operations include running shell commands, editing files, invoking tools, contacting an MCP server, or pushing to a source-control remote. A useful policy makes routine, reversible work fast while stopping higher-impact actions for review. OpenAI describes this principle in its May 8, 2026 article Running Codex safely at OpenAI: “higher-risk actions should stop for review.”

Approval is a workflow control, not a technical wall. If the agent process can read a private key or modify a file outside the project, asking before a later command does not undo that access. Approval prompts also depend on the policy implementation: a broad allow rule, an overlooked tool, or an incorrect precedence rule can leave an important action unprotected.

Sandboxing controls capability

A sandbox defines the execution boundary: which paths are visible or writable, which processes can be started, and whether outbound network traffic is possible. It should be enforced by the operating environment, such as a container, virtual machine, restricted user account, filesystem policy, or network proxy, rather than relying only on instructions sent to the model.

OpenAI’s security guidance frames sandboxing as the technical boundary and approvals as the trigger for asking the user. That framing is useful for evaluating other projects, but implementations differ. Check the exact agent, release, backend, and launch flags you use.

Start with a realistic threat model

Generated code can use everything exposed to its runtime. OpenAI’s Agents API security guidance explicitly warns that agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available in its environment. A coding task that looks harmless can therefore read a neighboring checkout, inspect environment variables, install software, upload data, or alter deployment files if those capabilities are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the assets that need protection

  • Source trees outside the current task, including other repositories and home-directory configuration.
  • Environment variables containing API keys, cloud credentials, signing keys, and source-control tokens.
  • Production data, local databases, SSH configuration, and browser or package-manager credentials.
  • Outbound destinations, especially arbitrary web services and package registries.
  • Irreversible actions such as deleting data, publishing releases, merging changes, or pushing to a remote.

Define the smallest useful workspace

Give the agent only the repository, test fixtures, and temporary directories it needs. Mount additional paths read-only when possible. Run it as a dedicated, unprivileged user and avoid sharing the host’s home directory or container socket. If the task needs a service, expose that service through a narrow interface instead of granting broad host access.

What to compare before choosing an agent

Do not rank projects by the presence of a single “safe mode” switch. Compare the following axes in the version and deployment you will actually operate.

Axis Questions to answer Documented example
Approval policy Which operations prompt, which are allowed automatically, and which are denied? Can rules target tools, commands, paths, or resources? OpenAI separates approval policy from sandboxing. OpenCode V2 supports ask, allow, and deny outcomes.
Rule precedence What happens when broad and specific rules both match? Is precedence documented and easy to audit? OpenCode V2 states that the last matching rule wins.
Filesystem boundary Can the process read or write outside the task workspace, and is that restriction enforced outside the model’s tool policy? OpenHands warns that its unsandboxed server has full filesystem access.
Network boundary Can outbound traffic be disabled or limited to approved hosts without breaking required dependencies? OpenAI recommends restricting outbound access to approved endpoints.
Credentials Can generated code read keys and tokens? Can a trusted service broker credentials without exposing their values? OpenAI describes proxy-based secret brokering and cautions that injected secrets are visible to agent-generated code.
Auditability Are prompts, approvals, tool calls, results, MCP use, and network decisions logged with enough context to review them? OpenAI describes OpenTelemetry events for these categories.
Deployment Does execution run locally, remotely, in a container, in a VM, or in a cloud backend, and who controls that host? OpenHands documents local, remote, and cloud backend options.

These are investigation criteria, not a tested ranking. The available documentation does not establish that one open-source agent is categorically safest.

OpenHands: deployment choice changes the boundary

OpenHands presents itself as a self-hosted developer control center and documents local, remote, and cloud backends. That flexibility means the host configuration is part of the security model.

Why the unsandboxed option is high risk

The OpenHands repository’s “Without a Sandbox” installation option carries this warning: “This runs the agent-server directly on the machine you’re installing on — the agent will have full access to your filesystem!” Treat that as a direct description of the selected setup, not as a minor configuration note. Running the server on a workstation with personal files, SSH keys, and cloud credentials gives the agent the same filesystem reach as that process.

Safer OpenHands deployment questions

  • Which backend actually executes commands: your laptop, a remote host, a container, or a cloud worker?
  • What directories are mounted, and are any mounts writable when read-only access would work?
  • Is the runtime user isolated from your normal account and its credential files?
  • Is outbound traffic blocked or filtered, and can you verify the effective network policy from the host?
  • What happens to logs, task files, and temporary artifacts after the run?

If you choose an unsandboxed installation for convenience, compensate by using a disposable machine or dedicated account with no unrelated data and by keeping credentials out of the environment.

OpenCode V2: ordered rules require careful precedence checks

OpenCode V2 documents ordered permission rules with three outcomes: ask, allow, and deny. Its example asks before shell commands, allows routine Git inspection such as git status and git diff, and denies git push. The documented precedence is significant: the last matching rule wins.

How to reason about an ordered policy

  1. List the broad default for each tool category, such as asking for shell execution.
  2. Add narrow allows only for commands that are read-only, expected, and easy to reverse.
  3. Add explicit denies for actions that should never occur in an automated session, such as pushing to a remote.
  4. Review the order from top to bottom and determine the final match for every important command.
  5. Run harmless test commands and confirm that the observed prompts match the written policy.

OpenCode’s documentation is explicitly for V2 and says configuration names differ in V1. Check the documentation for your installed major version before copying any example. The rule system demonstrates useful granularity, but it is not evidence that OpenCode is inherently more secure than another project.

Design a least-privilege permission policy

Allow reversible inspection

Start by allowing operations that only inspect the checked-out project: listing files within the workspace, reading source files, checking diffs, and viewing repository status. Keep the scope tied to the workspace rather than allowing arbitrary paths.

Ask before changes with side effects

Require approval for dependency installation, database migrations, service restarts, file deletion, changes outside the workspace, and commands that write to external systems. A prompt should show the exact command or tool arguments, the working directory, and the reason the agent supplied, so a reviewer can make an informed decision.

Deny irreversible or out-of-scope actions

Use explicit denials for production credentials, remote pushes, release publication, destructive cleanup, and access to unrelated repositories. Deny rules are stronger than relying on a user to reject every prompt, particularly in unattended or batch workflows.

Account for indirect actions

A command that appears to be a read can invoke scripts, hooks, plugins, or package lifecycle tasks. Treat interpreters, build tools, and package managers as execution capabilities. Review what a permitted command can spawn, not only its first word.

Pair the policy with filesystem and network isolation

Filesystem controls

  • Use a disposable workspace or VM for untrusted tasks.
  • Mount only the project and required fixtures; keep host secrets and unrelated checkouts outside the namespace.
  • Prefer read-only mounts for reference data and separate writable scratch space.
  • Prevent access to host control interfaces such as container sockets unless the task absolutely requires them.

Network controls

OpenAI recommends restricting outbound traffic to approved endpoints. A practical policy may allow the package registry and internal test service while denying arbitrary destinations. Verify whether DNS, IPv6, proxies, and redirect targets are covered; an allowlist that filters only the first hostname can be weaker than it appears. Network restrictions can break dependency installation or integration tests, so provide a controlled mirror or preloaded cache when appropriate.

Credential strategy

Do not inject a powerful secret merely because a build step needs it. OpenAI cautions that a secret placed in the environment is exposed to agent-generated code. Prefer short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials, separate identities for development and production, and a trusted proxy or server that performs an operation without revealing the underlying secret to the agent process.

Make actions reviewable and auditable

Approval prompts help at decision time; logs help you investigate what happened. OpenAI documents OpenTelemetry export for prompts, approval decisions, tool execution results, MCP server usage, and network proxy allow or deny events. If your chosen agent offers similar telemetry, capture it centrally with task identifiers and timestamps.

Minimum useful audit record

  • The user or automation job that started the task.
  • The model request and relevant policy version.
  • Each tool invocation, command, working directory, and arguments.
  • The approval outcome and reviewer identity when a prompt was shown.
  • Tool output, changed files, network decisions, and errors.

Logs do not prevent unsafe actions by themselves. Protect them from alteration, restrict who can read secrets that may appear in output, and set retention according to your organization’s requirements.

A practical rollout procedure

  1. Inventory capabilities. List every tool, shell, filesystem mount, network route, credential, and backend involved in a normal task.
  2. Create a disposable test environment. Seed it with a harmless marker file outside the intended workspace and a fake credential; never use production secrets for testing.
  3. Write the policy. Choose default outcomes, then add narrow allows and explicit denies. Document rule precedence.
  4. Verify the boundary. Ask the agent to inspect the marker, read an out-of-scope path, contact an unapproved host, and run a destructive command. Confirm each attempt is blocked or prompts as intended.
  5. Test normal development. Run the project’s tests, formatter, and dependency workflow. Record which legitimate operations require approval and decide whether any can be safely narrowed.
  6. Inspect telemetry. Confirm that prompts, decisions, tool results, and network events are recorded without leaking sensitive values.
  7. Recheck after upgrades. Agent defaults, sandbox support, hosting backends, and configuration names change. Repeat the tests whenever the agent, runtime image, or policy changes.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The agent asked before a command, so the host is safe.”

Approval does not reduce filesystem or credential access already granted to the process. Move execution into an isolated runtime and remove unnecessary mounts and environment variables.

“The container is isolated, so every command can be allowed.”

Containers can still contain valuable source, tokens, package credentials, or network routes. Keep deny rules for irreversible actions and restrict the container’s outbound access.

“A broad allow rule is overridden by my specific deny.”

Check precedence. In OpenCode V2, the last matching rule wins, so ordering can reverse the result you intended. Test the exact configuration rather than inferring behavior from its appearance.

“The build fails after network lockdown.”

Identify the precise hosts and ports required by the build, then allow only those endpoints or provide an internal mirror and cache. Do not restore unrestricted outbound traffic as the first fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The agent needs a token for one API call.”

Use a short-lived, least-privilege credential or a brokered service that performs the call without exposing the token. Remove any injected secret after the task and inspect logs for accidental disclosure.

Choosing a deployment pattern

Pattern Strength Main trade-off Best fit
Local process on a normal workstation Fast setup and direct access to developer tools Potential exposure of personal files, keys, and other repositories Low-risk tasks on a deliberately isolated account or disposable machine
Container with narrow mounts Clearer filesystem boundary and reproducible dependencies Requires careful handling of mounts, sockets, images, and network routes Routine development with controlled toolchains
Dedicated VM or remote worker Stronger separation from the developer workstation More operational cost and possible latency Untrusted code, sensitive repositories, or parallel automation
Unsandboxed self-hosted server Simple access to local tools and files The agent can inherit the server’s full filesystem reach Only when the host is disposable and contains no unrelated secrets

Bottom line for engineering teams

Evaluate an open-source coding agent as a complete deployment, not as a repository feature list. Set approval rules for command-level decisions, enforce a separate sandbox around files and processes, restrict the network, keep secrets out of the runtime or broker them through a trusted service, and record the resulting actions. OpenHands’ unsandboxed warning and OpenCode V2’s ordered rules show why setup and precedence matter. The only reliable claim is the one you verify in the exact version and environment your team will run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does open source automatically make a coding agent safer?

No. Safety depends on the runtime boundary, permission configuration, credentials, network access, deployment backend, and how those controls are tested. Open-source code can improve inspectability, but it does not remove misconfiguration risk.

Should I use approval prompts or a sandbox?

Use both. Approval prompts govern whether an operation proceeds; a sandbox limits what the process can reach even when a command is approved or a policy is wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the first test to run after configuring an agent?

Use a disposable environment containing a harmless out-of-scope marker file and fake credential. Test reads, writes, network access, and a destructive command, then verify the observed blocks and prompts against your policy.

Can network restrictions prevent normal development?

Yes. Dependency installation and integration tests may require specific hosts. Identify those endpoints and allow only them, or provide an internal mirror or cache instead of restoring unrestricted outbound access.
