First, define what “Jakarta EE server” means for your application
Jakarta EE is a collection of specifications, not one monolithic feature switch. The Platform profile contains the broadest set of APIs. Web Profile is a deliberately smaller set aimed at web applications, and Core Profile is a subset of Web Profile introduced with Jakarta EE 10. A server can be listed as compatible with a profile without every application using that profile being migration-free.

Then identify the deployment descriptors, vendor extensions, libraries, database drivers and messaging providers that accompany those APIs. Compare that inventory with the profile and version you intend to deploy. This prevents a common mistake: selecting a server because it carries a Jakarta EE 11 label while overlooking an API, descriptor or integration that is specific to your application.

The Jakarta EE compatibility page describes compatibility as a way to support “application portability, security, stability, and resiliency.” That is a baseline for standards conformance, not a promise that an application will run unchanged across every server build. Portability improves when the application stays within the specifications, but runtime defaults, classloading, security integration and operational conventions can still differ.
What the current version entries tell you
Open Liberty’s Jakarta EE 11 position
The compatibility directory lists Open Liberty 26.0.0.5 for Jakarta EE 11 Platform and Web Profile on Java 17 and Java 21. Open Liberty’s platform documentation also presents feature sets for Jakarta EE 11, 10, 9.1 and 8. Its overview states that Jakarta EE 11 requires Java SE 17 or later, while Jakarta EE 10 requires Java SE 11 or later.
These details are useful when an organization is standardizing on Java 17 or 21, or when different applications remain on older Jakarta EE levels during a staged migration. They are version-sensitive facts, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Recheck the live compatibility entry and the release notes for the precise Open Liberty build you will ship.

GlassFish’s Jakarta EE 11 position
The same directory lists Eclipse GlassFish 8.0.0-M12 and an explicitly JDK 17 build for Jakarta EE 11 Platform. Its Web Profile entries are 8.0.0-M10 and JDK17-M10. The M identifiers indicate milestone releases in the listing. Before production use, establish whether the particular artifact is a milestone, release candidate or final release, and read its release notes for supported JDKs and known limitations.
GlassFish also appears in older certification listings, including version 7 for Jakarta EE 10 and version 6.1 for Jakarta EE 9.1. That can matter when an existing application cannot move directly to Jakarta EE 11. It does not remove the need to test namespace changes, removed APIs, descriptor behavior, dependencies and operational integrations.
How the operating models differ
Open Liberty: compose the runtime from features
Open Liberty expresses Jakarta EE capabilities as features enabled in server configuration. This gives a deployment a visible declaration of what it needs rather than relying on an undocumented, all-inclusive runtime. In a configuration-controlled workflow, the feature list can be reviewed with the application, promoted through environments and checked for drift.

That model tends to suit teams that treat infrastructure as code, create repeatable server images or run many applications with deliberately different capability sets. It also means the team must understand the feature set required by each application and keep the configuration aligned with the chosen Jakarta EE level. A compatible server with a missing feature is still an unusable deployment.

GlassFish: administer a server through project tools
GlassFish Release 8 documentation organizes production work around deployment planning, administration, security, application deployment, performance tuning and high availability. It identifies the asadmin utility and the Administration Console help as administration resources.
This is a useful fit when operators already know the GlassFish administration model or when runbooks are built around its domain, server and application-management concepts. The existence of these guides demonstrates documented workflows; it does not establish that GlassFish is easier, faster or less expensive to operate than Open Liberty. Your team should perform the same provisioning, deployment, rollback, backup, certificate rotation and incident exercises on the exact builds under consideration.
Choose by decision axis, not by reputation
Required profile and API set
Start with the smallest profile that satisfies the application. If the application needs APIs outside Web Profile, a Platform deployment may be required. If it is a compact service using only a subset of web APIs, Core or Web Profile may reduce the feature surface, provided the selected server and version certify that profile.
Java standardization
For a Jakarta EE 11 deployment, plan around Java SE 17 or later for Open Liberty and verify the exact GlassFish JDK requirement in its release notes. Do not test with one JDK and deploy with another. Record the vendor distribution, patch level, JVM options, container base image and certificate store as part of the compatibility matrix.

Open Liberty’s feature configuration is attractive when pull requests, immutable images and environment overlays are central to delivery. GlassFish’s asadmin and Administration Console model may be preferable when the operations group has established administrative procedures and tooling around it. The deciding question is which configuration can be reproduced from a clean environment and audited six months later.

Existing operations and high availability
GlassFish’s Release 8 documentation explicitly maps production deployment, security, tuning and high-availability topics. Use those documents to design a proof of concept, then demand equivalent evidence from your Open Liberty runbooks: node replacement, health checks, session behavior, database failover, log collection, patching and recovery. Documentation coverage should inform the test plan, not substitute for test results.
Performance, memory and startup
The cited sources do not provide a controlled Open Liberty-versus-GlassFish benchmark. Do not repeat a generic claim that one server is faster, smaller or more efficient. Results depend on the application, JDK, hardware, garbage collector, enabled features, connection pools, workload mix and warm-up. A benchmark that changes any of those variables cannot answer your procurement question.
Support and lifecycle
The available official material does not establish comparative paid-support coverage, severity response times, lifecycle commitments or geographic availability. Determine whether you will use an upstream community build or a separately supported distribution, then obtain written terms for the exact version, patch cadence, security advisories, escalation path and end-of-support date.

You are starting a new Jakarta EE application
Lean toward Open Liberty if your platform team wants feature-based configuration and its target release supports the required profile, APIs and Java baseline. Lean toward GlassFish if the team’s strongest operational skills and existing runbooks are built around GlassFish administration. For either choice, freeze a version, JDK and configuration in source control before the first production release.
You are migrating an existing application
Do not select a destination from the current Jakarta EE 11 label alone. Inventory the application’s APIs, descriptors, libraries, database and messaging integrations, authentication mechanisms, TLS assumptions, scheduled jobs and monitoring hooks. Build the application on both candidate runtimes where practical, then run functional, security, data-integrity, upgrade and recovery tests against the exact versions.
You must remain on an older Jakarta EE level
Use the certified version associated with that level as your starting point, and verify its Java requirement and maintenance status. Open Liberty documents platform levels 8 through 11; the compatibility directory also records older GlassFish certifications. A staged upgrade may be safer than changing the EE level, JDK and server in one release, but the sequence should be driven by your dependency and support constraints.

You need a production cluster
Define the required failure behavior before choosing a product: what happens when a node disappears, a database connection is lost, a certificate expires or a deployment must be rolled back? Use GlassFish’s documented high-availability material where applicable, and create an equivalent, measured design for Open Liberty. Validate state management, load-balancer health checks, session handling, log correlation and recovery time with failure injection rather than an architecture diagram alone.
A repeatable evaluation procedure
- Freeze the target. Record the candidate server version, whether it is a milestone or final build, the Jakarta EE profile, JDK vendor and version, operating system or container image, database, messaging provider and reverse proxy.
- Inventory the application. List every Jakarta API, deployment descriptor, framework integration, third-party library, driver, authentication provider, scheduled task and external service. Mark items that depend on vendor behavior rather than a Jakarta specification.
- Create a clean deployment. Build each server from documented configuration, with no settings copied manually from an existing installation. For Open Liberty, review the enabled feature configuration. For GlassFish, capture the commands and administrative settings used to create and configure the target.
- Run compatibility tests. Exercise startup, deployment, REST and web flows, transactions, persistence, messaging, scheduled work, file handling, serialization, security roles and graceful shutdown. Capture failures with the server version and JDK in every report.
- Test operational procedures. Automate deployment, rollback, log retrieval, certificate replacement, configuration change, backup and restore, node replacement and patching. Measure operator steps and failure recovery rather than judging from a quick installation.
- Run a controlled load test. Use identical hardware, JDK, JVM options, application build, database data set, workload, warm-up period and measurement window. Record throughput, latency percentiles, error rate, startup time, steady-state memory, CPU and the cost of the required topology.
- Review the release and support decision. Confirm the selected build’s certification, JDK support, security-notice process, maintenance horizon and support terms. Keep the evidence with the architecture decision record.
Benchmark design that can actually distinguish the servers
A fair comparison changes one variable: the server. Use the same application artifact, database schema and data volume, request generator, network path and observability stack. Warm each runtime before collecting results, repeat runs until the variance is understood and publish latency percentiles rather than an average alone.
Measure the phases that matter to your use case separately. A server that starts quickly may use more memory at steady state; a low-memory configuration may increase garbage-collection pauses; a high-throughput result may hide unacceptable tail latency. Include deployment time, restart behavior, connection-pool recovery and failure handling if those affect your service-level objectives.
Keep configuration changes explicit. Enabling extra features, changing transaction settings or tuning the JVM for only one candidate invalidates a simple product comparison. If a product requires a different topology to meet the same availability target, report that as part of the operational cost rather than presenting a single-node number.
Migration pitfalls and recovery tactics
Assuming certification means drop-in compatibility
Certification addresses the Jakarta specifications and profile tested by the project. It does not certify your proprietary descriptors, database driver, messaging setup, security provider or framework combination. When a deployment fails, reduce it to the smallest reproducer, confirm the API and profile involved, then check the exact server and JDK release notes before changing application code.
Mixing namespace and platform changes
Moving from older Java EE-era dependencies to Jakarta EE can involve namespace changes, while moving to a newer server can alter defaults at the same time. Separate those changes in version control where possible. A known-good application build on the new namespace gives you a clearer signal when the runtime itself is changed.
Best Value
Testing only the happy path
Most migration defects appear in transactions, security constraints, asynchronous work, connection recovery, character encoding, time zones, classloading or shutdown. Add negative authorization tests, duplicate-message tests, database failover, expired credentials, rolling restart and rollback to the acceptance plan.
Ignoring milestone maturity
The GlassFish Jakarta EE 11 entries cited above are milestone identifiers. Treat a milestone as an evaluation target until the project’s release documentation says otherwise. Avoid making a long-lived production commitment without confirming upgrade compatibility, security fixes and a supported path to the final release.
Leaving the runtime implicit
Record the server build, JDK, enabled capabilities, JVM options and external services in the deployment artifact. Without that record, a later patch or a new base image can change behavior while appearing to be the same application release.
Security and resilience questions to ask before approval
- How are security patches announced, tested and promoted for the exact distribution and version?
- Can the team reproduce a clean build and verify the checksums or signatures supplied for the runtime?
- Which identity providers, certificate formats, TLS policies and secret stores are supported in the target environment?
- How are application permissions, administrative roles and audit logs reviewed?
- What is the tested recovery time for a failed node, corrupted deployment, unavailable database or expired certificate?
- Can the organization maintain the chosen version for the required period, or is a commercial support contract needed?
Neither the compatibility listing nor the cited operational guide answers all of these questions for your organization. They define where to look; your security and continuity tests establish whether the server meets your obligations.
Bottom line: which one should you choose?
Choose Open Liberty when its feature-oriented configuration, Java 17/21 path and deployment automation align with your platform engineering practices. Choose Eclipse GlassFish when its administration tools, existing operator expertise and documented production workflows are the better fit—and only after confirming the maturity and support status of the specific GlassFish build, especially the milestone versions shown for Jakarta EE 11.
For a new system, make the decision with a small production-like proof of concept. For an existing system, let the application inventory and compatibility tests decide. The evidence does not establish a universal performance, simplicity or support winner; a reproducible test on your workload is the responsible tie-breaker.
