The type belongs in a <meta> element in the document head and determines which additional Open Graph properties are relevant.
What Open Graph types mean
The Open Graph protocol lets a web page become a rich object in a social graph. Its og:type property identifies that object. Open Graph metadata is supplied with <meta> elements in the page’s <head>.
The basic properties form the minimum description of a page. The protocol treats og:type as one of those required basic properties, and the selected type determines which type-specific properties apply. A type describes the object represented by the page; it is not a replacement for the URL, a language, or a broad HTML category.

The documented Open Graph type families
Global types are organized into vertical namespaces. A period separates a vertical namespace from its subtype, as in music.song. The protocol uses this period-separated form for documented global types; custom names use a colon.

Do not assume that a property from one family applies to another. Use the fields documented for the selected type.
What should you put in og:type?
Use article for editorial and informational pieces
For a news story, tutorial, review, documentation page, or other work presented as an article, use article. Article metadata can describe publication, modification, and expiration times, the author, section, and tags.

Use book for a book object
Book pages can identify the author, ISBN, release date, and tags. A review of a book is still an article if the page represents the review; use book when the page itself represents the book object.

website is the appropriate general type when the page represents a site rather than a more specific object. The protocol defines no additional type-specific properties for website. It also says that a page with no Open Graph markup should be treated as website. That fallback does not make explicit markup unnecessary: declaring the type makes your intent clear and lets you provide the rest of the basic metadata.
Choose the matching music subtype
Music pages use one of four documented types. A single recording is music.song; a collection of recordings is music.album or music.playlist, depending on what the page represents; a broadcast station is music.radio_station. The applicable properties can describe duration, relationships between songs and albums, track positions, musicians, creators, and release dates.

Choose the matching video subtype
Use video.movie for a film, video.episode for an episode, video.tv_show for a show, and video.other when the video does not fit those documented categories. Video properties cover actors and roles, directors, writers, duration, release date, and tags. An episode can also identify the series it belongs to.

<meta property='video:tag' content='Documentary'>Do not select a video subtype simply because a page contains an embedded player. If the page is an article about a video, article may better describe the page object.
Global types versus custom types
Period-separated names such as video.movie are documented global types. A custom type uses a CURIE-style, colon-separated name such as my_namespace:my_type. The namespace must be declared with a prefix attribute on the document’s <head>.

</head>The namespace URI in this example is illustrative; use the namespace defined by your own vocabulary. Do not write an undocumented global-looking value such as video.case_study and expect it to become an official video subtype. If your object fits a documented global type, prefer that type so consumers can interpret its known properties.
A practical type-selection decision process
- Define the object at the canonical URL. Is the URL for an article, person, book, recording, album, show, episode, film, station, or general site?
- Choose the most specific documented type that is truthful. Use a music or video subtype when the object matches one; otherwise use
article,book,profile, orwebsite. - Add only applicable properties. Article dates do not belong on a profile, and episode-series data does not belong on a movie.
- Declare a namespace for a custom type. Use the colon form and a
prefixdeclaration when no documented global type describes your object. - Check the rendered head. Your CMS or framework may generate tags from a template. Inspect the final HTML delivered to visitors, not only the editor’s source fields.
CMS mappings are conventions, not protocol law
A content-management system may map templates to Open Graph types for you. For example, Yoast’s functional specification documents website for a homepage, profile for user profile pages, and article for posts and other templates. Those mappings describe Yoast’s behavior; they are not a universal rule that every CMS must follow. Override a mapping when the represented object differs, and verify the generated HTML.
Troubleshooting incorrect or missing types
The page has no Open Graph tags
With no Open Graph markup, the protocol treats the page as website. Add the basic metadata in the document head, including an explicit og:type, if you need a more specific object or type-specific fields.

The value uses the wrong separator
Periods identify documented global vertical types; colons identify custom namespaced types. Change an invented period-separated custom value to the colon form and declare its namespace with prefix.
Type-specific fields appear to do nothing
Confirm that the property belongs to the selected family and subtype. A consumer may ignore fields that are not defined for that type. Also check for a CMS template that is replacing your hand-authored tags in the final response.
The page is labeled as the wrong object
Separate the page’s subject from its surrounding content. A review page represents an article even when it discusses a book or video; a page that directly represents the book or video can use the corresponding object type.
Custom metadata is not recognized
Check that the custom CURIE appears in og:type, that the namespace is declared on the head’s prefix attribute, and that your custom properties use the same namespace prefix. Keep the namespace URI stable so the vocabulary remains identifiable.
