Neither design wins every situation. Bone-conduction headphones are often a natural fit for runners and other outdoor athletes who want a secure, sports-oriented frame while leaving the ear canal open. Air-conduction open-ear earbuds can suit listeners who prefer sound delivered through the air near the ear and a less traditional contact point. For calls, the deciding factor is the individual headset’s microphone system and its performance in wind and background noise—not the category name.
Choose by activity, fit, microphone design, weather protection, controls and the conditions in which you will actually listen. An unobstructed ear canal can help you hear more of your surroundings, but neither technology guarantees awareness or safety around traffic, machinery or other hazards.

What “open-ear” and “bone conduction” actually mean
The terms describe related but different things. “Open ear” primarily describes the way a product is worn and how it avoids sealing the ear canal. “Bone conduction” describes the route the audio signal takes to reach the inner ear.

Air-conduction open-ear headphones
Air-conduction open-ear headphones use conventional speakers that direct sound through the air toward the area around the ear. The speaker may sit beside the ear, above it or on a small ear hook, but it does not form an in-ear seal. Bose describes its open-ear products as delivering sound through the air near the ear rather than through bone vibration.

Because the sound travels through air, these products can preserve a more familiar speaker-like presentation. Fit varies widely: some use a flexible ear hook, some rest on the outer ear and some attach to a band. The exact position affects bass, volume and how much outside sound leaks in.
Bone-conduction headphones
Bone-conduction headphones use transducers that contact the head, usually near the cheekbones in front of the ears. They transmit vibrations through the skull to the inner ear while leaving the ear canal open. Shokz markets OpenRun as an open-ear, bone-conduction sports headphone, and its product material says its headphones support calls.
A U.S. government technical publication also discusses bone-conduction transmission and the fact that the ear canal remains open. That description explains the mechanism; it does not establish that bone conduction always sounds better, is always safer or produces clearer calls than an air-conduction design.

There is no established, category-wide winner. Call quality depends on microphone placement, the number and type of microphones, signal processing, the fit of the headset and the noise around you. A well-designed open-ear earbud can outperform a poorly tuned bone-conduction headset, and the reverse can also be true.
Microphone design matters more than the label
Manufacturers commonly describe wind-reduction or background-noise features, but those descriptions are product claims rather than controlled comparisons. Shokz says many of its models use microphones intended to reduce background noise. Bose’s September 17, 2026 announcement described a microphone setup for its then-announced Sport Open Earbuds and Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen). Those statements identify features; they do not prove how either product will sound to the other person beside a busy road.

When comparing a specific pair, look for independent voice tests recorded in conditions that resemble your use. A quiet-room sample is useful for checking tone and loudness, but it cannot answer whether your voice remains intelligible in wind, traffic, a gym or an open office.
Call-quality checklist
- Wind handling: Check recordings or reviews made outdoors while walking or running. Wind hitting a microphone can overwhelm speech even when music playback remains clear.
- Competing voices: Look for evidence from cafés, offices, gyms or transit areas rather than relying on a manufacturer’s “noise reduction” wording.
- Microphone position: A boom, stem or outward-facing microphone may behave differently from microphones tucked behind the ear or on a neckband.
- Echo and sidetone: During a two-way call, confirm that your own voice does not sound hollow and that the other caller does not hear room echo.
- Connection behavior: Test the headset with your actual phone or computer. Bluetooth profiles, operating-system updates and conferencing apps can change call behavior.
- Physical controls: Confirm that answer, mute and end-call controls are reachable without disturbing the fit.
A practical call test
- Pair the headset with the phone or computer you use most.
- Record a short voice memo indoors at normal speaking volume.
- Repeat while walking outside in light wind, then in the noisiest routine location where you expect to call.
- Ask a contact to describe what they hear, including whether words disappear when you turn your head.
- Test mute and call-answer controls in the same position you will use during work or exercise.
If a product has only manufacturer demonstrations and no independent recordings, treat its real-world call performance as unconfirmed. The available evidence does not establish a controlled head-to-head result between current air-conduction open-ear and bone-conduction models.

Start with the movement, not the technology. A device that feels secure on a steady walk may bounce during intervals, loosen under a helmet or press uncomfortably against glasses during a long ride.
Running and road workouts
For running, the priorities are stability, low pressure, sweat resistance, controls that can be found by touch and sufficient volume for the route. OpenRun is a relevant bone-conduction example because Shokz positions it as a sports headphone with an open-ear frame. That makes it a candidate for runners who prefer a band around the back of the head and contact points in front of the ears.
An air-conduction open-ear model can work just as well if its hook or frame remains stable during your stride. Its speaker position may make music sound more natural to you, but the result depends on the shape of your ear and the product’s adjustment range.

Cycling and traffic-adjacent activity
Open-ear designs may allow more environmental sound to reach the ear than sealed in-ear products, but hearing a sound is not the same as detecting every hazard. Wind noise, traffic, road surfaces and your chosen volume all affect what you can perceive. Follow local cycling and traffic rules, and do not treat an open ear as permission to ignore visual checks or other safety practices.

Gym training and strength work
For lifting, classes and indoor machines, check whether the frame collides with glasses, hats, helmets or a bench headrest. Bone-conduction contact points can become noticeable when sweat, pressure or a tight headband is added. Air-conduction hooks can catch on hair or headwear. Try the headset through the full range of movements you perform, including lying down and turning your head.
Hiking and everyday activity
For walking, commuting or hiking, comfort over several hours may matter more than maximum output. The open-ear approach can make conversations and announcements easier to notice, but a crowded station, strong wind or loud street can still mask audio and speech. Carry a way to pause playback quickly, and keep volume low enough to remain attentive to your surroundings.
Exercise factors to compare before buying
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stability | Does the frame stay put during your actual stride, head turns and jumps? | Movement changes speaker or transducer position and can reduce both comfort and intelligibility. |
| Contact pressure | Note pressure near the cheekbones, outer ear and behind the head after 30–60 minutes. | A secure fit that becomes painful will not work for long sessions. |
| Glasses and headwear | Wear your normal glasses, cap, helmet or headphones-compatible headgear during the test. | Arms, straps and frames can compete for the same space. |
| Sweat and water rating | Verify the exact model’s rating and care instructions. | “Sports” or “open ear” does not establish a water rating. Do not infer swimming or heavy-rain suitability from the category. |
| Controls | Check button size, location, accidental presses and operation with sweaty fingers. | Physical controls are useful when you cannot safely reach a phone. |
| Environmental audio | Try the intended volume in the real location. | Open-ear construction does not guarantee that traffic, alarms or other hazards will be heard. |
| Battery and charging | Confirm the manufacturer’s stated runtime and charging method for the exact model. | Long sessions and travel expose differences that a short store demonstration will not. |
Sound: what you may hear differently
Air-conduction open-ear products use speakers, so music and spoken voice may resemble the balance of a small external speaker. Because the sound is not sealed into the canal, bass can be less consistent when the speaker shifts or when the surrounding environment is loud. Some designs let you adjust the speaker’s distance or angle, which changes the tonal balance.
Bone-conduction models stimulate the inner ear through vibration. The presentation can feel different from ordinary speakers, especially with bass-heavy tracks or at high volume. Contact pressure and placement affect the result, and some listeners notice vibration sensations at higher levels. These are design characteristics, not evidence that one method is universally superior.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Compare the material you actually use: speech, podcasts, acoustic music, bass-heavy music and navigation prompts. A product that sounds clear for spoken voice may not satisfy you for music, while a powerful music profile can make navigation announcements harder to understand in noise.

How to choose in five steps
- Name the primary activity. Running, cycling, gym work, hiking and desk calls impose different fit and microphone demands. If calls are your main use, start with voice evidence rather than exercise branding.
- List the gear that must coexist. Include glasses, helmets, hats, masks, hair restraints and any hearing protection. Eliminate models that occupy the same pressure points.
- Set your call requirement. Decide whether you need reliable speech in a quiet room, a shared office, light outdoor wind or traffic-adjacent conditions. Require independent tests in the hardest condition you regularly face.
- Verify environmental and weather needs. Read the exact model’s water rating, temperature guidance and cleaning instructions. Do not assume a sports frame can be submerged or used in heavy rain.
- Trial the actual routine. Wear the headset for at least one complete workout and one realistic call. Check stability after sweat, comfort after an hour and whether you can operate controls without reaching for your phone.
Examples of the two approaches
Bone-conduction sports example: OpenRun
OpenRun illustrates the sports-oriented bone-conduction approach: a frame that keeps the ear canal open and is marketed for exercise, with call support stated by the manufacturer. Consider it when a behind-the-head sports frame matches your activity and you value that style of fit. You still need to verify comfort with glasses or headwear, the exact water rating and independent microphone results for your conditions.
Air-conduction example: Bose open-ear earbuds
Bose presents its open-ear range for situations in which hearing the environment matters. Its September 17, 2026 announcement described the microphone arrangement for the then-announced Sport Open Earbuds and Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen). Treat those as product details and positioning, not as proof of superior call clarity or hazard detection. Test the speaker position, stability and voice pickup in your own environment.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “open ear” means “safe”
An open canal can make surrounding sound more available, but volume, wind, traffic and attention determine what you actually notice. Keep visual awareness, obey local rules and pause audio when a situation demands concentration.
Buying from a category label alone
Two bone-conduction models can use different transducers, bands and microphones. Two air-conduction products can have completely different hooks and speaker angles. Compare model-specific evidence, not just the technology name.

Testing only indoors
Indoor quiet can hide wind rumble, road noise and microphone clipping. Include the places where you will call and exercise before deciding.
Ignoring fit changes after sweating
Sweat can alter grip and comfort. Test after a real workout, then clean the product according to its care instructions rather than improvising with solvents or excessive water.
Assuming a published water rating covers every use
Ratings apply to specified conditions and do not automatically mean the product is suitable for swimming, salt water, soap or high-pressure sprays. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model.
Bottom-line decision
Choose bone conduction when a sports-oriented frame and cheekbone transducers fit your activity and comfort preferences. Choose air-conduction open ear when you prefer speaker-style sound near the ear or a different hook and frame arrangement. For calls, select the model with the strongest independent evidence in your actual wind and background-noise conditions. For exercise, select the one that stays comfortable and stable with your gear, weather and route. The form factor alone cannot supply a universal winner.
