Around $20 can be a sensible test budget for open-ear audio: enough to try the fit and listening style before committing to a more expensive pair, but not a proven price for the best quality or value. Budget models do exist, though prices and availability change. Treat any listing as a starting point, not a promise that a particular product will cost $20.
What a low-cost trial can tell you
A budget pair can help answer personal questions that product specifications cannot: Do you like having your ears uncovered? Does the fit stay comfortable through a realistic listening session? Can you hear the content clearly in the places you use it, and are the controls easy to operate?

That makes a low-cost trial useful before an upgrade, especially if you have never worn this kind of audio gear. But one inexpensive pair cannot tell you whether every open-ear design will suit you. Fit, sound, connection reliability, durability, and support can differ from model to model, and price alone does not predict those qualities.

Open earbuds and bone conduction are not the same
“Open-ear” describes a broad approach, not a single technology. Open earbuds use small speakers positioned at or near the ear without sealing the ear canal. Bone-conduction headphones sit against the cheekbones and transmit sound as vibration toward the inner ear. These designs can feel and sound different, so identify which type you are considering rather than treating the terms as interchangeable. SoundGuys explains the distinction and trade-offs.

- Clear Calls with 4 Mics and AI Enhancement: Equipped with four mics and an AI algorithm, V20i open-ear Bluetooth earbuds ensure crisp and clear calls wherever you are.
- Open earbuds: Often use a clip, hook, or another structure to hold a speaker near the ear. They may feel more like sound coming from a nearby speaker, but leave the canal unsealed.
- Bone conduction: Rests on the cheekbones rather than placing a speaker in or over the ear. Speech can be prominent, while bass may be limited compared with sealed headphones.
What to expect from cheap open-ear audio
Open designs can let you hear more of your surroundings than sealed earbuds, but that usually comes with less isolation and less bass. Bone-conduction models can be especially speech-forward and bass-light. Whether those trade-offs matter depends on what you listen to and where you listen. TechRadar’s open-ear guide and RTINGS’ category comparison discuss different designs and their compromises.
There are budget examples in both categories. Scarbir’s October 2026 under-$25 guide names the Baseus Bass BC1 as an open-ear clip-on option, while RTINGS identifies the Soundcore C30i as a budget open-ear example and the Creative Outlier Free as a budget bone-conduction choice. RTINGS describes the Creative as comfortable and stable but notes lower water resistance and a mid-forward sound with limited bass. These are examples, not guarantees of a particular live price or fit.
Around-$20 reports and deals for models such as the Soundpeats Pop Clip2 show that listings can reach this range, but a deal can expire or vary by retailer. Check the exact model and current listing before buying. A low price is useful only if the pair can test the fit or listening use you care about.

Choose a trial pair for your actual routine
A pair meant for podcasts at a desk has different demands from one intended for outdoor runs or calls on the move. Before buying, decide what you need the trial to prove, then compare the features that affect that use:
- Fit style: Clip, ear hook, and wraparound-band designs hold the speaker differently. Consider which is likely to stay comfortable and stable for your activity.
- Listening mechanism: Separate air-conduction open earbuds from bone-conduction headphones; their sound and fit are not interchangeable.
- Comfort and stability: Think about a session of realistic length, not just how the product feels when first put on. Movement can change whether a fit works.
- Sound balance: Listen for clear speech, acceptable overall balance, and enough bass for your tastes. Open designs generally give up some isolation and bass relative to sealed models.
- Connection and controls: Check whether the connection stays dependable in your usual setting and whether you can use the controls without interrupting what you are doing.
- Battery and water resistance: Match these to your routine. A desk listener and someone exercising outdoors have different needs.
- Return terms: Review the seller’s return window and conditions before purchase; they determine how practical it is to assess comfort at home.
Keep ambient awareness separate from safety
Leaving the ear canal open may make environmental sounds easier to hear, but it does not make outdoor listening inherently safe. Keep the volume low enough to remain attentive and account for traffic, other people, and changing conditions. Do not assume an open-ear pair makes running or cycling safe.
Water resistance also deserves a use-specific check. For example, Shokz describes its OpenMove as an open-ear bone-conduction model with an IP55 rating and a weight of 29 g. Those figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test findings, and the OpenMove is a reference for the entry-level bone-conduction category—not evidence that a suitable pair will cost around $20. See the manufacturer’s OpenMove product page.

When an upgrade is worth the extra spend
Upgrade when the trial reveals a specific shortfall that matters to you, not simply because a more expensive model exists. If the fit is uncomfortable, look for a different attachment style; if speech is clear but music feels thin, compare the sound balance and bass of alternatives; if the connection or controls frustrate you, prioritize those features in the next pair.

Paying more may buy a more refined experience, but it does not guarantee that the fit or sound will suit you. WIRED likewise presents a $50 clip-on pair as a relatively affordable way to discover whether someone likes open earbuds, while noting it is less refined than more expensive options. That reinforces the point: $20 is one possible trial budget, not a uniquely correct threshold. Read WIRED’s open-ear guide.
