Choose the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro if the box itself must run Plex Media Server, connect USB storage, use wired Gigabit Ethernet, or pass advanced lossless audio to an AV receiver. Choose an onn 4K Google TV device when you only need a Plex client for a server already running on a computer or NAS and want a potentially less expensive streamer. The comparison changes substantially between the standard onn 4K, onn 4K Plus, and onn 4K Pro, so identify the exact model before comparing specifications or price.
The decision that matters: Plex client or Plex server?
Plex has two separate jobs. A client is the app on your television or streaming box that browses a library and plays it. A server stores the library, manages users and metadata, and sends the requested video to clients. Your best purchase depends on which job you need the device to perform.

When the box is only a Plex client
If Plex Media Server already runs on a desktop, mini-PC, or NAS, either an onn Google TV device or a SHIELD TV can act as the playback client. NVIDIA says SHIELD includes the Plex client, while Plex support says official Android TV and Google TV devices can run the regular Android Plex app. That makes onn a reasonable client candidate, but platform support does not prove identical codec, subtitle, frame-rate, or audio behavior across every onn generation.
In this arrangement, the server does the demanding work. If a television cannot directly play a file, the server may transcode it before sending a compatible stream. Your network, server processor, subtitles, and receiver can matter more than the streaming box.

When the box must host Plex Media Server
NVIDIA documents Plex Media Server support on SHIELD TV, including hardware audio/video transcoding and access to media on SHIELD storage, USB drives, or a NAS. NVIDIA describes the feature as most advanced Plex server functions in a low-power device consuming “<10 W.” That is an NVIDIA statement about SHIELD’s power use in this server context, not an independent benchmark and not a guarantee that every workload will run without limits.
Do not assume an onn device can replace a NAS or desktop server. The available evidence supports onn as a Google TV Plex client; it does not establish Plex Media Server hosting on every onn model, unrestricted background operation, or equivalent transcoding capability. If local server hosting is a requirement, SHIELD is the documented choice in this comparison.
First identify which onn 4K model you are buying
“Onn 4K Streaming Box” is not one unchanging product. Current Walmart listings distinguish three devices. The specifications below are listing descriptions and can change by retailer, region, or product revision.
| Model listed by Walmart | Internal storage | RAM | Video features listed | What that means for Plex |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| onn 4K Google TV streaming device | 8 GB | 2 GB | 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, dual-band Wi-Fi | Suitable to consider as a basic Plex client; storage is the tightest of the three. |
| onn 4K Plus | 16 GB | 2 GB | Product listing specifies 4K Google TV features | More room for apps and cache than the standard model, but still not documented as a Plex server. |
| onn 4K Pro | 32 GB | 3 GB | Product listing specifies 4K Google TV features | The most generous onn storage and memory listing; verify ports, network, and audio details for the exact package. |
Do not attach the 32 GB or 3 GB figures to the standard onn 4K, and do not infer that extra storage turns any onn model into a server. Storage mainly provides room for installed apps and temporary data; it is not a substitute for a media library drive.
What the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro provides
NVIDIA lists SHIELD TV Pro with a Tegra X1+ processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, Android TV, Gigabit Ethernet, and two USB 3.0 ports. The product page lists Plex as an included app. NVIDIA also says the 16 GB storage can be expanded with USB drives.
| SHIELD TV Pro feature | Documented specification | Plex relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Tegra X1+ | Supports the device’s client functions and NVIDIA’s documented server/transcoding features. |
| Memory | 3 GB RAM | More headroom than the 2 GB onn listings, although memory pressure can still limit server workloads. |
| Internal storage | 16 GB | Enough for the operating system and apps; use USB, NAS, or another source for a substantial library. |
| Network | Gigabit Ethernet plus Wi-Fi | Wired networking can provide a more predictable path for high-bitrate local streaming and server access. |
| Expansion | Two USB 3.0 ports | Attach supported USB storage or other peripherals; storage setup and power requirements still matter. |
| HDMI audio passthrough | Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS-X listed | Useful when an AV receiver or sound processor needs the original lossless audio formats. |
SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro are the products NVIDIA’s North America FAQ identified as available as of January 15, 2026; that date does not prove inventory or pricing in your country. The product family is established, but it is also older than the latest onn iterations, so compare the features you actually need rather than assuming newer hardware is automatically better for Plex.

How Plex works on each device
Using onn as a client for a computer or NAS server
- Install Plex Media Server on the computer or NAS that will hold your library, then complete its server setup and sign in.
- Connect the onn device to the same home network. Prefer a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection where available; the onn listings cited here specify dual-band Wi-Fi but do not establish Ethernet on every model.
- Open Google TV’s app store, search for the official Plex app, install it, and sign in with the account that can access your server.
- In the Plex app, select the server and library you want. Start with a file whose video, audio, and subtitle formats your television and receiver are known to support.
- During playback, open the stream information panel in Plex. Check whether the item is Direct Play, Direct Stream, or Transcoding. Transcoding means the server, not the onn box, is converting some part of the stream.
This setup is attractive when your server is already reliable. The onn only needs to decode the output it receives, and you avoid filling the streamer’s limited internal storage with media.
Using SHIELD as both server and client
- Connect SHIELD to your display and network. Use the Gigabit Ethernet port if you can run a cable to your router or switch.
- Open the preinstalled Plex app and sign in. NVIDIA’s guide states that SHIELD includes both the Plex client and Plex Media Server.
- Enable Plex Media Server in SHIELD’s settings, then choose where the server database and media will live. NVIDIA documents SHIELD storage, USB-connected drives, and NAS locations as media sources.
- Attach and format or prepare a USB drive according to SHIELD’s storage prompts if you want local expansion. Keep the drive powered and connected whenever the server is expected to be available.
- From another device, open Plex and add libraries that point to the selected SHIELD, USB, or NAS paths. Allow time for metadata scanning before judging performance.
- Test playback from the television and from one remote client if remote access is important. Check the dashboard for Direct Play and transcoding activity.
NVIDIA also documents live TV and DVR functions for SHIELD Plex Server. Those functions require a compatible digital tuner, an antenna, and a Plex Pass-enabled account. Mobile photo or movie backup likewise requires Plex Pass. A Plex Pass is therefore a conditional requirement for those features, not for ordinary playback from an existing library.
Audio and home-theater compatibility
SHIELD TV Pro’s product specification explicitly lists Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD/DTS-X passthrough over HDMI. That matters if your receiver or sound processor expects to decode those original bitstreams. Set the television, receiver, and Plex audio options so that HDMI passthrough is permitted, then verify the receiver’s input display during a known compatible file.
The cited onn listings identify 4K video, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ for the standard 4K device, but they do not provide a comparable, model-specific Plex table for lossless audio passthrough, every Dolby format, or every DTS variant. Do not buy an onn on the assumption that it will reproduce the same audio path as SHIELD. Check the exact model’s current technical sheet and your receiver’s supported formats before purchase.
Video labels also need context. A file can be 4K yet still require transcoding because of its codec, bit depth, frame rate, subtitle format, or audio track. HDR support on the box does not guarantee that your television, HDMI chain, and Plex server will preserve HDR in every combination.
Server capacity, transcoding, and SHIELD’s limits
SHIELD’s documented hardware A/V transcoding is the reason it is the stronger server candidate here. It can reduce the load for clients that cannot direct-play a file, while its USB and NAS access gives you practical storage choices.

- Control your home entertainment center with SHIELD Remote’s built in IR blaster. Control volume, power, or input source.
That does not make SHIELD equivalent to a dedicated NAS or unrestricted desktop server. Plex has a separate support article titled “Limitations When Running Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD.” Its search-result description calls out temporary free-space requirements for some very large, high-bitrate files and performance degradation when the transcoder is starved for memory. The detailed page should be checked for current guidance against your own workload; do not treat the search description as a universal performance limit.
- One direct-play viewer: Usually the least demanding case. A stable network and compatible client can avoid transcoding.
- Several simultaneous viewers: Each transcode consumes resources. Test the number and quality levels your household actually uses.
- Large remuxes and high-bitrate files: Keep free space available for temporary processing and monitor for buffering.
- Subtitle-heavy libraries: Image-based subtitles can force video transcoding in some playback paths, increasing load.
- Remote streaming: Upload speed, remote client limits, and server-side transcoding matter as much as the box.
If your library routinely serves many simultaneous transcodes, requires extensive automation, or needs large redundant storage, a dedicated server platform may be a better architecture. The evidence here supports SHIELD as a low-power, integrated option, not as a promise of workstation-class capacity.
Network and storage choices
When Ethernet is worth prioritizing
Choose SHIELD Pro’s Gigabit Ethernet when the device will host the server, pull high-bitrate files from a NAS, or sit far from a reliable wireless access point. Wired networking reduces one source of variability, although it cannot fix an overloaded server, slow storage, or insufficient internet upload capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor an onn client, dual-band Wi-Fi may be adequate for ordinary direct-play streams if signal strength is good. Because the cited onn listings do not establish a common Ethernet connection across the lineup, inspect the exact model rather than planning a wired installation around the product name alone.
USB, NAS, and internal storage
SHIELD can use USB-connected storage, NAS storage, or its internal storage for Plex media according to NVIDIA’s guide. Internal 16 GB storage is best reserved for the system, Plex database, and apps. A USB drive is simple for a small local library; a NAS is more suitable when you need centralized storage, backups, or access from several devices.
Keep the Plex database and temporary working space healthy. A nearly full drive can cause scans, artwork updates, or high-bitrate playback to fail even when the media files themselves fit. Use a filesystem and power arrangement supported by your SHIELD setup, and do not disconnect a drive while Plex is scanning or writing metadata.

| You need live TV/DVR through Plex on the box. | SHIELD TV Pro | NVIDIA documents the feature on SHIELD Plex Server. | A digital tuner, antenna, and Plex Pass-enabled account are required. |
Buying checklist before you pay
- Write down whether Plex Server runs on the box, a computer, or a NAS.
- Record the exact onn generation: standard 4K, 4K Plus, or 4K Pro.
- Check your television’s HDR formats and your receiver’s HDMI audio capabilities.
- List the codecs, subtitle types, and bit rates in the files you watch most often.
- Decide whether you need Ethernet, USB storage, NAS access, or only Wi-Fi playback.
- For SHIELD server use, reserve free storage and plan how the USB drive will stay powered and connected.
- If you need DVR or backup features, confirm that your account has the required Plex Pass entitlement.
- Check current local price and stock immediately before ordering. Walmart’s surfaced onn listings showed changing availability, and NVIDIA’s January 15, 2026 North America FAQ does not establish inventory in every market.
Troubleshooting common Plex problems
The onn app cannot find the server
Confirm that both devices are signed into the expected Plex account, that the server is running, and that the onn is on the same network for an initial test. If the server is on a guest Wi-Fi network, client isolation may block discovery. Open Plex manually and enter the server from the account’s available sources rather than relying only on automatic discovery.

Playback buffers on a high-quality file
Inspect the Plex dashboard while the stream is playing. If the server is transcoding, reduce the client quality temporarily and test a Direct Play-compatible file. On SHIELD server, check available free space, USB-drive health, and memory pressure. On an onn client, test Wi-Fi signal and router placement; changing boxes will not cure a server that cannot transcode quickly enough.
Video plays but the receiver is silent
Verify the HDMI route, receiver input, television passthrough settings, and Plex audio selection. Test a file with a known compatible track. SHIELD Pro’s listed TrueHD and DTS passthrough does not override a receiver or television that cannot accept those formats. For onn, consult the exact model’s current audio specification rather than copying SHIELD settings.
A USB library disappears from SHIELD
Check that the drive has power, remains mounted in SHIELD storage settings, and was not unplugged during a scan. If the server database points to a changed mount path, update the library location carefully and allow Plex to rescan. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable media and database data; a single USB drive is not redundancy.
Bottom-line recommendation
For Plex client-only use, an onn 4K device can be the sensible value choice when the exact model meets your television, Wi-Fi, and audio requirements and your server already runs elsewhere. The 4K Plus and 4K Pro provide more listed storage than the standard 8 GB model, but no cited source establishes that they host Plex Media Server or outperform SHIELD on every codec.
For an all-in-one Plex box, buy the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro if its current local price and availability work for you. It is the only option here with NVIDIA’s explicit documentation for Plex Media Server, hardware A/V transcoding, USB/NAS media, Gigabit Ethernet, and the listed lossless HDMI passthrough formats. Treat its low-power design as convenient rather than limitless, and size the setup around your number of viewers, file bit rates, storage plan, and need for Plex Pass features.
