onn. 4K Streaming Box vs. Chromecast with Google TV: Which Is Better for Plex?

Neither device is a guaranteed Plex winner. Both can run Plex as a Google TV or Android TV client, but whether a movie plays smoothly depends on the file’s container, video and audio codecs, bitrate, resolution, subtitle format, network path, and your Plex Media Server’s ability to transcode. A 4K label alone does not prove that a box will Direct Play every 4K file.

Choose the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) when its documented Dolby Vision, HDR10/HDR10+, HLG, Dolby audio passthrough, 2 GB memory, Wi‑Fi 802.11ac and optional Ethernet adapter match your display and network. Choose the onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box only after confirming the exact model and testing representative files; the 2024 manual for model 110125667 confirms Google TV, 4K output and Chromecast built-in, but does not publish enough codec, HDR, memory or networking detail for a complete technical head-to-head.

Start by identifying the exact products

“onn. 4K Streaming Box” can refer to more than one product or revision. The available 2024 manual identifies model 110125667. It describes a Google TV device with 4K support, Chromecast built-in and app installation through the Google Play Store. It does not establish that every product sold under a similar name has the same hardware.

Google also sells two Chromecast with Google TV variants. The specification pages distinguish the 4K model from the HD model. The comparisons below refer to Chromecast with Google TV (4K), not the HD edition. Check the model name on the box, device settings screen and retailer listing before buying.

The onn. specifications come from a third-party-hosted 2024 manual, while the Chromecast figures come from Google specification pages accessed October 13, 2026. They are published specifications, not independent Plex benchmarks.

Will Plex work on either device?

Yes, as an app-platform question. Plex says official Android TV and Google TV devices can run its regular Android app from the Google Play Store. The onn. manual describes its box as Google TV and documents Play Store app installation, so the normal installation route is available. Chromecast with Google TV is also a Google TV device and uses the same Play Store model.

App availability is only the starting point. Plex does not promise that every file will Direct Play on every Android TV or Google TV device. The client still has to decode the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, bitrate and resolution, and it must handle the selected subtitle format. If one of those elements is incompatible, Plex can use Direct Stream or ask the server to transcode.

How Plex playback modes affect the choice

Direct Play

Direct Play sends the original file to the client without changing the media. Plex’s guidance treats the container, bitrate, codecs and resolution as compatibility conditions. Direct Play normally places the least work on the server and preserves the source quality, but it requires a match between the file and the device/app’s actual playback capabilities.

Direct Stream

With Direct Stream, Plex keeps the audio and video streams when possible but repackages them into a container the client can use. This requires less server work than a full transcode, although it can still consume resources and may not solve an incompatible video or audio codec.

Transcoding

Transcoding converts the media to a format the client can decode. It is the safety net for libraries containing unusual codecs, high bitrates, unsupported subtitles or resolutions beyond the client’s practical limits. A server that cannot transcode reliably can turn a minor client incompatibility into buffering, playback failure or a severe quality reduction.

Plex’s Smart TV format article should not be used as a specification sheet for these boxes: Plex explicitly limits that article’s baseline to Smart TV apps and says it does not apply to Android TV, Fire TV, Roku TV or similar platforms. Use the Android/Google TV app’s behavior and your own files instead.

What the differences mean for picture, sound and networking

4K and HDR

Both products are presented as 4K-capable in the available documentation, but that describes display output rather than universal file support. Chromecast with Google TV (4K) has an explicit Google list of Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, with output up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second. The onn. manual confirms 4K but does not state which HDR standards it accepts or passes through. Do not buy the onn. box on the assumption that it matches the Chromecast’s HDR list.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

For a Plex library, check the HDR format recorded in your files and the capabilities of the television or receiver. A file can be 4K yet require transcoding because of its codec, bitrate, subtitles or audio, even when the display itself supports 4K.

Audio passthrough

Google lists Dolby audio passthrough for Chromecast with Google TV (4K). That can matter if an AV receiver or soundbar should decode the original Dolby track. The onn. manual does not provide an equivalent audio-format list, so its handling of a particular surround track must be verified on the actual equipment. Receiver support, HDMI configuration and the selected Plex audio track remain part of the chain.

Network connection

Chromecast’s documented 802.11ac Wi‑Fi is a known baseline; the optional Ethernet power adapter provides a wired alternative. The located onn. manual does not establish its Wi‑Fi generation or a wired-network option. If the streaming box is far from the router, separated by dense walls or serving high-bitrate remuxes, network stability may matter more than nominal output resolution. Measure the path you will actually use rather than assuming that either “4K” label guarantees sufficient throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory and responsiveness

Google publishes 2 GB of memory for Chromecast with Google TV (4K). No comparable onn. memory figure was found. Memory capacity alone does not predict Plex decoding, buffering or app responsiveness, so it should be treated as a specification difference—not proof that one product plays a given file better.

Match the box to your Plex library before buying

A short inventory prevents most wrong conclusions. Use the Plex server’s library details or media-analysis information and record representative files, not just the most common ones.

  1. List containers. Note whether your files are in formats such as MKV or MP4. The container is one of Plex’s compatibility conditions.
  2. Record video codecs and levels. Include H.264, HEVC/H.265, AV1 or any less-common codec, plus resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Include both ordinary 1080p files and your largest 4K files.
  3. Record audio tracks. Note codecs, channel layout and whether files carry Dolby or other surround formats. Keep at least one file with the audio configuration you use most.
  4. Check subtitles. Image-based or otherwise unsupported subtitles can trigger a video transcode even when the video itself is compatible. Test the subtitle formats your household actually uses.
  5. Check server headroom. Confirm that the Plex Media Server can transcode the demanding files for one or more simultaneous users. If it cannot, prioritize a client that Direct Plays your library or convert the media in advance.
  6. Separate local and remote use. A file that plays on the home network may require a different quality setting or a server transcode when viewed remotely.

After the inventory, select two or three “stress” files: a high-bitrate 4K title, a file with your preferred surround track and a subtitle-heavy file. Those tests reveal more than playing a single ordinary 1080p episode.

Install and configure Plex on the onn. box

  1. Verify the model. Confirm that the device is the Google TV 4K Streaming Box identified as model 110125667, rather than another onn. product.
  2. Complete Google TV setup. Connect HDMI and power, select the display resolution, join the intended Wi‑Fi network and sign in to the Google account used for the Play Store.
  3. Install Plex. Open Google Play Store, search for Plex, choose the official Plex app and install it. The onn. manual describes Play Store installation for apps.
  4. Sign in to the correct Plex account. Open Plex, authenticate to the account that has access to your Plex Media Server and select the server when prompted.
  5. Set the network path. For local playback, ensure the app is reaching the server over the home network. For remote playback, confirm that remote access and the account permissions are already working from another device.
  6. Test the stress files. Play each representative file and observe whether Plex reports Direct Play, Direct Stream or Transcode. Test with and without subtitles and with the audio track you normally choose.
  7. Adjust one variable at a time. If playback buffers, first test a lower-bitrate file on the same network, then remove subtitles, switch audio tracks or test a wired path if one is available. This isolates client, server and network causes.

Install and configure Plex on Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

  1. Confirm the 4K model. Do not confuse Chromecast with Google TV (4K) with the separate HD model.
  2. Connect the device. Attach HDMI and power, complete Google TV setup and join a stable Wi‑Fi network. If you use Google’s Ethernet-capable power adapter, install it according to the adapter instructions and verify the wired connection in network settings.
  3. Install Plex from Google Play. Search for Plex in the Play Store, install the official app and sign in to the Plex account that can reach your server.
  4. Check display and audio equipment. Select the display’s 4K/HDR path only when the television, HDMI connection and receiver support it. If you depend on Dolby passthrough, verify the receiver or soundbar is set to accept the relevant bitstream.
  5. Run the same stress-file test. Use identical files, subtitle settings and audio tracks used in the onn. test. Record the playback mode shown by Plex rather than judging only by whether a short clip starts.
  6. Test casting separately. Plex supports casting from its Android and iOS mobile apps to video Chromecast devices and Chromecast-built-in targets. During playback, the phone acts as a remote. Volume behavior can vary with the audio format or surround-sound path.

A practical comparison by use case

Your situation More defensible choice Reason and qualification
You need documented HDR formats and Dolby passthrough Chromecast with Google TV (4K) Google explicitly lists Dolby Vision, HDR10/HDR10+, HLG and Dolby audio passthrough; confirm the rest of your equipment supports them.
Your library is mostly ordinary 1080p H.264 with common audio Either, subject to price and availability Both platforms can install Plex, and this library is less demanding; no exact-model Plex benchmark establishes a winner.
You have high-bitrate 4K remuxes or unusual codecs Whichever passes your stress-file test, with a capable server Container, bitrate, codec, subtitles and server transcoding determine playback; output labels are insufficient.
Your router coverage is weak Chromecast if its optional Ethernet adapter fits your setup Google documents the Ethernet accessory; the onn. manual does not establish a wired option.
You mainly cast from a phone Either, if the target appears reliably Both have Chromecast functionality in the available documentation. The mobile device remains the playback remote and volume control can vary by audio format.

Troubleshoot Plex playback methodically

Plex will not install

Confirm that the device is signed into Google Play, has network access and is the intended Google TV model. Search for the official Plex app rather than attempting to install an Android phone package manually. If the app is unavailable in your region, check the device’s account and regional settings before assuming a hardware fault.

A file buffers while another file plays

Compare the two files’ bitrate, resolution, codecs, audio tracks and subtitles. A high-bitrate 4K file can exceed the practical capacity of a weak Wi‑Fi path even when a lower-bitrate 4K file works. On the server, check whether Plex has switched from Direct Play to Direct Stream or Transcode. If transcoding is occurring, verify CPU/GPU capacity and whether another user is already consuming resources.

Video plays but audio is missing or wrong

Switch temporarily to a simpler audio track and retest. Then verify the receiver or TV’s HDMI and passthrough settings. Chromecast’s Dolby passthrough specification does not mean every Dolby variant will be accepted by every downstream device, and the onn. manual does not publish a matching format list.

Subtitles cause a transcode

Disable subtitles for a test, then try a text subtitle format instead of an image-based track when available. Plex may need to burn subtitles into the video, which increases server workload even when the underlying video codec is otherwise compatible.

Remote playback works at home but fails away from home

Treat this as a server or remote-network issue first. Confirm Plex remote access, upload bandwidth, account permissions and the remote quality setting. A client that Direct Plays locally may require a lower-bitrate stream or server transcode remotely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone casting is unreliable

Ensure the phone and target are on reachable networks, select the correct Chromecast target and keep the Plex app signed in. Remember that casting hands control to the target while the phone functions as a remote; changing the phone’s volume may not control a surround-sound path in the same way as changing the receiver’s volume.

Price, availability and support checks

Current prices, stock, regional model numbers and software support were not established by the available documentation. Before purchasing, compare the exact model identifier, return policy and included power equipment in your region. For Chromecast with Google TV (4K), include the cost of the separately sold Ethernet-capable power adapter if wired networking is important. For the onn. box, do not rely on a retailer title that omits the model number or combines specifications from another onn. product.

Software updates can change app behavior, codec handling and casting reliability. Check the device’s current Google TV system version and Plex app version after setup, then repeat the stress-file test following a major update.

Decision checklist

  • Have you confirmed the exact onn. model and the Chromecast 4K—not HD—variant?
  • Does your television support the HDR format you intend to watch?
  • Have you listed your library’s containers, video codecs, audio codecs, bitrates, resolutions and subtitle formats?
  • Can your Plex Media Server transcode when a file is not a Direct Play match?
  • Is Wi‑Fi stable at the installation point, or do you need a documented wired option?
  • Have you tested a high-bitrate 4K file, a surround-audio file and a subtitle-heavy file?
  • Have you checked current regional price, stock, included accessories and return terms?

If the Chromecast’s documented HDR, audio and networking features solve a requirement you can name, it is the safer specification-led purchase. If your files are ordinary and the onn. device is materially less expensive, it can be a sensible Plex client—but only with the understanding that its published manual does not establish equivalent codec, HDR or network support. The decisive evidence for either box is how your own stress files play and whether your server can handle the modes Plex selects.
