The combination’s strongest case is the P-80’s broad connectivity and room-tuning options alongside the M-80’s conventional Class AB power stage. Its value depends on whether those features suit your system—and on the regional price and optional Dirac licenses.
What does each component do?
The P-80 is a network preamplifier, not a power amplifier. It selects and processes sources, controls volume, provides streaming and room-correction features, and sends a signal to a power amplifier. The M-80 is the two-channel power amplifier that drives passive speakers. Together, they form a separates-based system rather than a single integrated amplifier.

Onkyo describes the M-80 as a Class AB design with a three-stage Inverted Darlington circuit and DIDRC in its driver stage. The manufacturer also attributes distortion and vibration benefits to DIDRC, the DAC, chassis, heat sinks and other design choices. Those are design claims, not independent evidence that the system sounds better than competing equipment.
How much power does the M-80 deliver?
Power figures vary by market and test conditions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Onkyo’s 2026 US V05 specification sheet rates the M-80 at 130 W per channel into 8 ohms across 20 Hz–20 kHz at 0.08% THD, with both channels driven. The same sheet lists 200 W per channel into 4 ohms at 1 kHz and 0.7% THD, also with both channels driven. See Onkyo’s US M-80 specification sheet for the published conditions.

Onkyo’s international product page gives the 130 W/8-ohm figure with 0.07% THD, while Hi-Fi News describes the UK rating as 150 W/8 ohms. Different regional ratings or test specifications are not a like-for-like comparison; match impedance, frequency range, distortion and channel-drive conditions before comparing amplifiers. The US sheet specifies speaker impedance of 4–16 ohms.
The M-80 has one pair each of balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, plus a 12 V trigger input. It measures 435 × 135 × 345 mm (17.1 × 5.3 × 13.6 in) and weighs 13.5 kg, according to the US sheet. Those dimensions and weight matter when checking rack space and placement.

How does Dirac room correction work on this model?
Onkyo lists Dirac Live Room Correction Suite Stereo as included, with correction from 20–500 Hz. Full-bandwidth correction requires a separately purchased license, and Dirac Live Bass Control is an optional upgrade. The included range may be useful for bass and room-mode issues, but buyers who want correction above 500 Hz should account for the additional license rather than assume the full range is included. Onkyo’s P-80 product page describes the feature and its limits.
What do reviews say about listening and usability?
StereoNET’s David Price rated the pair 9/10 in a review published on 6 October 2026. HomeTheaterHifi reported favorable listening impressions, highlighting bass presentation, the DAC, MM/MC phono stage, soundstage and room-adjustment options. It also wanted more phono gain and loading choices and more balanced connections. These are reviewer judgments from their listening contexts, not controlled measurements or proof of superiority.

Hi-Fi News discusses the UK-market power rating and the P-80’s DAC, HDMI ARC, phono stage, network audio, app control and streaming options. Taken together, the reviews point to feature breadth as a central appeal, while analog adjustability and the number of balanced connections are potential decision points for system builders.

Onkyo’s 7 January 2025 launch announcement gave a US suggested retail price of $1,999 for each component and said availability was expected in Q4 2025. That launch guidance and StereoNET’s later listed prices do not establish today’s transaction price, current inventory, warranty terms or availability.
Is the Onkyo P-80 and M-80 combination worth considering?
The system makes the most sense when its features solve specific needs: a preamp with HDMI ARC and network streaming, MM/MC phono, balanced pre-outs, two subwoofer outputs, and built-in bass-range room correction, paired with a separate power amp. It is less compelling if you do not need the P-80’s source and room tools, or if your priority is extensive phono loading/gain adjustment or a larger number of balanced connections.
When comparing it with another separates system, compare amplifier power only under matching test conditions, confirm the streaming services and room-correction range for your region, and include any Dirac license costs in the total. Check current retailer pricing, stock and warranty locally; dated published prices are not a substitute for a current offer.
