In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a strong opening comes from reading enemy pressure, not simply attacking faster. Learn when to defend, how Issen and Break Issen differ, and when to collect souls or use Oni powers. These spoiler-light tips draw on official descriptions and developer interviews; they do not assume specific button inputs or timing windows.
Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword for September 25, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It follows Miyamoto Musashi in a dark-fantasy version of Edo-era Kyoto threatened by Genma. Availability and platform timing can vary by storefront; Capcom said the Windows demo would arrive later.

1. Learn your defensive options before chasing damage
Parrying and deflecting are tactical blade-on-blade responses, while Issen is a critical attack. Dodging serves a separate purpose: consecutive dodges fill a Reflex Dodge gauge, which enables a powerful Reflex Combo once full. Think of these as different answers to enemy pressure rather than interchangeable ways to avoid a hit. Official sources describe the moves but do not establish their exact controls or timing windows.

Director Satoru Nihei says Issen must be performed just before an incoming hit. Miss the timing and you may take substantial damage, so avoid attempting it blindly. Watch an enemy commit to an attack and learn its rhythm before making Issen your response. Nihei described the aim of preserving its classic character: “So even though it has been updated in some ways, we wanted to make sure that classic element is kept.”

3. Earn Break Issen by draining Stamina
Break Issen becomes available after you completely deplete an enemy’s Stamina Gauge. This gives you another route to the signature attack beyond relying only on precise timing. The developers have described it as making Issen available in more situations, but official material does not promise a particular amount of damage or a guaranteed kill.
4. Dodge to evade and build toward Reflex Combo
Use dodges to get clear of danger, not as a reflexive action without regard to the attack. PlayStation’s overview says consecutive dodges fill the Reflex Dodge gauge; when it is full, you can use a powerful Reflex Combo. The practical trade-off is to avoid what is coming while building toward that response, rather than dodging blindly.
5. Absorb souls when the opening allows it
The Oni Gauntlet absorbs Genma souls and turns them into a power source. Developers say you can absorb souls while moving, which can make collection less of a pause in combat, but they also describe it as a tactical choice. Prioritize it when the fight gives you room; do not assume every moment is safe or that souls have a particular expiration timer. Director Nihei said of the moving absorption mechanic, “So that’s how we’ve changed it in that sense, but while keeping the core identity of those mechanics.”

6. Use Oni abilities and armaments deliberately
Oni Strength can break defenses, while Oni Agility provides movement that can cross certain walls. Switching Oni Armaments slows time, according to the producer, giving you room to choose one without the same real-time pressure. Consider the obstacle or enemy situation before choosing an ability or armament; the official descriptions do not specify a universal best choice.
7. Choose the challenge setting that helps you learn
The game offers Story Mode and Action Mode. Producer Akihito Kadowaki describes Action Mode as aimed at players more familiar with action games, and says its challenge can be tuned with an Action Guide. Start with the mode that suits your comfort and use the guide if you want to adjust Action Mode rather than treating a higher challenge as a requirement.
8. Use the demo to learn the systems, not to carry over a save
The demo includes Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption, making it a way to get familiar with the named systems. PlayStation says demo progress does not carry into the full game. Demo save data can unlock the Kubi Akari charm. Capcom’s announcement said the Windows demo would arrive later, so check the relevant platform storefront for availability.
