The best Oni Armament depends on the problem in front of you, not on a universal damage tier. Use the Oni Bow against ranged Genma and for distant mechanisms, Earth-Shakers to break boss stamina and armor, The Two Celestials to create healing opportunities, Wind-Whipper against nearby groups, Firebird Flute for burn and stagger pressure, Flashing Void when you need red souls, and Still Water when purple-soul extraction is the priority. The seven-item list and locations below come from post-release guides; the location guide reports checking the full game on patch 1.0, while Capcom’s own preview confirms the Oni Bow’s role and its discovery in the Oni Refuge.
Quick answer: which Oni Armament should you use?
Think of Oni Armaments as situational tools attached to the Oni Gauntlet. Each one solves a different combat or exploration problem, so “best” means “best for this encounter.” This role-based view is more reliable than a single damage ranking: the tier-list source itself says its catalogue still requires play verification, while the item guides describe effects and locations rather than publishing a complete, controlled performance test.

| Ranged enemies and environmental mechanisms | Oni Bow | Capcom says Musashi can return fire against Genma archers and trigger mechanisms from a distance. |
| Boss stamina and armor | Earth-Shakers | Vandal describes the paired hammers as heavily draining stamina and breaking armor. |
| Creating healing opportunities | The Two Celestials | Hits from its special attack are described as producing yellow souls that can restore health. |
| Groups at close range | Wind-Whipper | Its whirlwind covers a wide area and can ignite near torches or other open flames. |
| Burn and stagger pressure | Firebird Flute | Its flaming birds burn and stagger enemies. |
| Red-soul extraction | Flashing Void | The lightning spear is described as dealing heavy damage while extracting red souls from defeated enemies. |
| Purple-soul extraction | Still Water | Its powerful strikes are associated with extracting purple souls. |
For a boss, start with Earth-Shakers if stamina or armor is the immediate obstacle, then choose another armament whose soul or status effect supports the next phase. For a mixed room, Wind-Whipper or Firebird Flute is usually more useful than a single-target choice. Keep the Oni Bow equipped whenever the level is asking you to answer archers or interact with something out of reach.

How the Oni Armament resource works
The armaments are tied to the Oni Gauntlet and a limited combat resource, but the terminology is not consistent across guides. One guide describes them as being fueled by blue souls; another explains that most consume the Oni Power Gauge and specifically identifies the Oni Bow as an exception. Do not assume every armament spends the meter in exactly the same way. Watch the game’s own gauge and the item’s behaviour rather than applying one blanket rule to all seven.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultimate Swordplay Action – Master the blade with an arsenal of exhilarating sword techniques in absorbing battles and overcome fierce fights using every tool at your disposal, including environmental hazards and supernatural abilities.
- A Legendary Cast of Characters – Dark fantasy and history collide to tell tales of fabled figures, including Miyamoto Musashi (whose face is modeled after the late, iconic samurai movie actor Toshiro Mifune), plus Sasaki Ganryu, and more.
- Overcome Your Demons – Duel formidable foes in intense boss encounters, standing toe to toe against unfathomably powerful Genma and a sadistic rival swordsman armed with an Oni Gauntlet and devilish powers of his own.
- Explore the Mysteries of Kyoto – Step into a twisted vision of Japan’s historic capital, including faithful recreations of real-life locations like the famed Kiyomizu-dera Temple, as well as otherworldly realms with surreal landscapes.
- Pre-order Bonuses – Reserve an early copy to receive the “Sealed Curse” sword skin and “Lion Dog” charm as bonuses. Pre-orders of the Deluxe Edition and Premium Deluxe Edition also include additional bonus rewards.
That limitation makes timing part of the weapon choice. PC Gamer’s review notes that armaments can affect enemy health, power souls and stamina, but also warns that waiting too long to spend stored resource can let a boss take the souls. Saving the gauge for a theoretical perfect opening is therefore risky: use an armament when its effect will prevent damage, break a dangerous phase or create the resource you need next.
A practical timing rule
- Enter the encounter with the armament that answers its main threat: bow for archers or mechanisms, Earth-Shakers for stamina and armor, or a crowd tool for a packed arena.
- Build or preserve enough resource to reach the effect you need, but do not hold it through an entire boss phase while the enemy can remove your stored souls.
- Spend the attack when several benefits overlap—for example, Earth-Shakers during an exposed stamina window, or Wind-Whipper beside an active flame source.
- After the attack, reassess the room. Soul colour, enemy spacing and the next mechanic may make a different armament the better follow-up.
Best Oni Armament for each combat role
Oni Bow: ranged enemies and puzzles
The Oni Bow is the clearest utility pick. In Capcom’s PlayStation Blog preview, Public Relations Manager Kyle Burleson writes, “Before long, Musashi plucks an Oni Bow from the wreckage of this realm.” The preview explains that Musashi finds it in the Oni Refuge, uses it to return fire against Genma archers and activates environmental mechanisms from range. That makes it more than a backup damage option: it changes how you approach vertical rooms, distant targets and puzzle routes.
Take the bow when an area contains archers who can punish a melee approach, or when a mechanism is positioned beyond sword range. The guide sources also identify it as the one armament that does not use the Oni Power Gauge in their descriptions, so it should not be managed as though it were identical to the other six.

Earth-Shakers are the specialist choice for an armoured or stamina-gated opponent. Vandal says the paired hammers greatly deplete stamina; its guide description says one hit can remove around half of an enemy’s Stamina Gauge and destroy armor. That is an approximate guide claim, not an official stat or a guaranteed result against every enemy, difficulty or encounter.
Use them when the boss’s dangerous attacks are controlled by a stamina break, or when armor is preventing your normal attacks from creating an opening. Triggering the hammers during a visible recovery or exposed window gives you the best chance of converting the stamina damage into a punish. Do not treat the “around half” figure as a promise that two hits always finish the bar.
The Two Celestials: healing opportunities
The Two Celestials are the sustain-focused option. Vandal describes special-attack hits producing yellow souls that can be absorbed to recover health. That makes the armament valuable in long routes and attrition fights where a healing item would otherwise be required, even if another armament would produce more immediate burst damage.
Use it when you can safely connect with multiple targets or when a boss gives you a predictable opening. The generated yellow souls are an opportunity, not automatic healing: you still need to absorb them, and collecting them in a dangerous position can cost more health than it restores.

Wind-Whipper creates a wide-area whirlwind, making it the natural answer to several enemies converging at close range. Vandal also says nearby torches or open flames can ignite the whirlwind. Before activating it, look for a brazier, torch or other visible fire source; positioning the fight near that flame can add the enhancement described by the guide.
Its value is coverage and space control rather than a universal single-target ranking. Against one mobile boss in an empty arena, Earth-Shakers or a soul-focused armament may do more for your immediate plan. Against clustered enemies around a flame, Wind-Whipper can turn the environment into part of the attack.
Firebird Flute: burn and stagger
Firebird Flute launches flaming birds that Vandal describes as burning and staggering enemies. Pick it when interrupting an attack or applying fire pressure matters more than extracting a specific soul colour. Burn and stagger are especially useful when a group is about to surround you or when a boss has a punishable animation that you want to extend.
The two location descriptions for this item differ in precision: one calls it Treasure #45 in Eastern Kyoto, while another places it south of the Gojo Street East Spirit Shrine at the former Rift location. Use the landmark information as a search area, but verify the route in your own chapter walkthrough rather than assuming both descriptions are an identical step-by-step path.

Flashing Void: red-soul extraction
Flashing Void is a lightning spear. Vandal associates it with heavy damage and extracting red souls from defeated enemies. That makes it the targeted choice when red-soul collection is more valuable than healing, crowd coverage or stamina breaking. Plan the final blows around the armament’s stated extraction effect if your upgrade or ability route depends on red souls.
Still Water: purple-soul extraction
Still Water delivers powerful strikes and is associated by Vandal with extracting purple souls. Choose it when purple-soul generation is the resource objective, particularly after you have identified enemies that can be finished safely by its attacks. Its role is distinct from The Two Celestials: Still Water is for purple-soul extraction, while The Two Celestials is the guide-described yellow-soul healing option.

The table follows the reported locations in Vandal’s full item guide and the corroborating Onimusha Guide page. These are editorial walkthrough locations, not an official Capcom item database. The second guide says it checked the full game on patch 1.0, but the two sources do not agree on every landmark, so treat conflicting entries as areas to verify rather than as guaranteed turn-by-turn directions.
| Armament | Reported acquisition | Cross-check and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| The Two Celestials | Loot the first treasure chest, according to Vandal’s listing. | The other location guide places it at Kiyomizu-dera Temple after defeating the second Thread Genma at the second Oni gate. The chapter or chest number is not consistent between the guides. |
| Oni Bow | Take the first chest on the Oni Refuge route. | Capcom’s preview confirms an Oni Bow in the Oni Refuge wreckage but does not identify a chest number. |
| Wind-Whipper | Receive it as a story event during “The Oni’s Apprentice.” | The location guide says the reward comes after the Skills practice grounds. |
| Earth-Shakers | Open the chest beside the fan mechanism in the Underground Laboratory during “What Lurks in the Shadows.” | The other guide narrows this to Underground Level 4 and the fan puzzle. |
| Firebird Flute | Find Treasure #45 in Eastern Kyoto. | Another guide says it is south of Gojo Street East Spirit Shrine, where the Rift had been. Confirm the landmarks in a full walkthrough. |
| Flashing Void | Open Treasure #4 on Mount Oe, inside a cave on a side route near Castle Courtyard. | The corroborating guide says the cave requires sliding access. |
| Still Water | Open Treasure #5 in Arashiyama, in a cave in the northeastern swamp. | The other guide also places it in the northeast corner and says miasma blocks the route. |
What to do if a chest is missing
Some guide coverage says a missed chest may be reachable through chapter select, but that detail is not corroborated by the other opened location guide. If an item does not appear where expected, record the chapter, objective and nearby landmark, then check whether the game offers chapter replay before assuming the armament is permanently lost. Do not rely on an unconfirmed chapter number for The Two Celestials or Firebird Flute.
A route-planning checklist for collecting every armament
- Oni Refuge: open the first chest for the Oni Bow and note nearby mechanisms that can later be solved from range.
- “The Oni’s Apprentice”: complete the story sequence and the Skills practice grounds to receive Wind-Whipper.
- Underground Laboratory: during “What Lurks in the Shadows,” search Underground Level 4 around the fan mechanism for Earth-Shakers.
- Eastern Kyoto: track the Treasure #45 listing for Firebird Flute, using the Gojo Street East Spirit Shrine description as a landmark check rather than a guaranteed route.
- Mount Oe: investigate the side route and sliding-access cave near Castle Courtyard for Treasure #4, Flashing Void.
- Arashiyama: search the northeastern swamp cave for Treasure #5, Still Water; expect the miasma-blocked approach described by the location guide.
- Kiyomizu-dera and the second Oni gate: verify the second Thread Genma encounter and chest placement if The Two Celestials is not in the first chest described by the other guide.
How to choose an armament before a fight
When the arena is crowded
Check enemy spacing and the environment first. Wind-Whipper is the area-control choice, with extra value near an open flame. Firebird Flute is better when a burn or stagger can interrupt a dangerous enemy. If the group includes archers, remove the ranged threat with Oni Bow before committing to a melee crowd attack.
When a boss is armoured or stamina-gated
Equip Earth-Shakers and wait for a safe opening rather than swinging into an invulnerable animation. The guide-described stamina and armor damage is the reason to choose them; the approximate “around half” figure should not dictate a fixed two-hit script.
When survival or upgrades are the priority
Choose The Two Celestials if yellow-soul healing can keep you alive through the route. Choose Flashing Void or Still Water when red- or purple-soul extraction supports the upgrade path you are pursuing. The resource colour is part of the decision, not just the attack animation.
When exploration is blocking progress
Switch to Oni Bow. Capcom specifically describes it as useful against Genma archers and for activating environmental mechanisms at range, so it is the only armament with a clearly documented puzzle function.
