Open Settings > Battery, inspect recent battery usage, identify the app or process at the top, and then change only the setting connected to what you find. After that, check brightness, recently installed apps, software updates, charging temperature, and overnight settings. The labels and available features differ by OnePlus model and OxygenOS version, so a path documented for OxygenOS 14 may not appear exactly the same on another phone.
There is no universal OnePlus battery-drain cause or guaranteed setting that fixes every phone. The sequence below separates an app problem from a configuration issue, charging conditions, software trouble, and normal battery wear while keeping the most disruptive actions until last.

Start with the battery-use evidence
A sudden percentage drop is useful only when you can see what consumed the charge. OnePlus OxygenOS 14 manuals describe a battery page that reports recent use and the apps that have run and consumed power. Depending on the model and version, the entry may be called Battery usage or Battery usage details, and the reporting period can vary.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Battery usage or Battery usage details.
- Review the recent period shown and note the apps or processes using the largest share.
- Compare the list with when the drain occurred: while the screen was on, while the phone was idle, during navigation, after charging, or overnight.
Do not treat the first item as proof by itself. A navigation app can legitimately use substantial power during a long trip, for example. The useful question is whether the listed activity matches what you were doing and whether the drain began when that app, service, or setting changed.

What the list can and cannot tell you
- A recently active app near the top gives you a testable suspect.
- A high screen contribution points you toward brightness and screen-on time rather than indiscriminately restricting background apps.
- An idle or overnight problem makes background behavior, sleep optimization, network activity, charging conditions, or battery wear more relevant.
- The page is a record of the selected period, not a laboratory diagnosis. It cannot by itself prove that an operating-system update caused the drain.
Take a screenshot or write down the top entries before changing settings. That gives you a way to tell whether a targeted change altered the pattern instead of relying on memory.
Test the app or process at the top
If the drain started after installing or updating an app, OnePlus support recommends testing by removing that recently installed app. Uninstall it temporarily, restart the phone, and observe the same type of use that exposed the problem. If the abnormal drain stops, reinstall only if you need the app and can verify that a newer version or different configuration behaves normally.
Use a controlled test
- Record the top battery users and the time of the observation.
- Close the activity you were performing normally; do not force-close every app on the phone.
- For a newly installed app, uninstall it using the phone’s normal app-uninstall control.
- Restart the OnePlus phone.
- Repeat comparable use and check Settings > Battery again.
Broad force-closing is a poor diagnostic method. It can erase the evidence you need, interrupt expected services, and create a cycle in which apps restart and consume power again. Target the app that the battery page identifies instead.

Messaging, navigation, media, camera, and other actively used apps can appear high on the list because they were actually doing work. A high entry is more suspicious when the phone was idle, the app was recently installed, or its use does not match your behavior. Check the time window and context before restricting it.
Change app battery behavior selectively
On documented OxygenOS 14 devices, App battery management provides controls over an app’s activity. The exact location and wording vary, but the principle is the same: apply a restriction to a demonstrated offender rather than disabling background activity for everything.

Choose the least disruptive control
- Open the app’s battery-management controls from the battery settings page, or open the app’s details and then its battery options if your model presents them there.
- Identify whether the control limits background activity, foreground activity, or both.
- Apply the narrowest restriction that tests your theory.
- Use the app normally and check whether the drain changes.
- Restore normal behavior if the app becomes unreliable or notifications arrive late.
OnePlus warns that turning off foreground activity can make an app work improperly and delay notifications. That trade-off matters for messaging, navigation, alarms, authentication, work, and any app that must respond promptly. A restriction that saves power but prevents a time-critical alert is not a successful configuration.
Apps that should usually keep normal background behavior
- Apps where you expect immediate messages or calls.
- Navigation or location tools you rely on while traveling.
- Security, authentication, or device-management tools that must remain available.
- Any app whose delayed notification would create a practical risk.
If a restriction solves the drain but breaks one of these functions, remove the restriction and continue investigating the app, its account synchronization, or a software update rather than accepting silent failures.

Built-in modes are useful when you need more runtime, but they do not all address the same cause. The following comparison reflects the behavior described in OxygenOS 14 manuals; your model may use different labels or omit a feature.

Power saving and super power saving are runtime measures, not proof that the underlying cause has been fixed. If you need them every day, return to the battery-use page and continue the diagnosis.
Sleep standby optimization
OnePlus describes this feature as follows: “Turning on Sleep standby optimization will switch your phone to a low-power state while you sleep, reducing the frequency of push notifications to extend battery life.” Enable it only if fewer overnight notifications fit your routine. If you need immediate alerts, leave it off and investigate the app or network activity responsible for the idle drain.

Super power saving mode
This is the option for a genuinely low battery when you need the phone to remain available. It limits the apps you can use, so it is not a practical permanent solution for a fully featured smartphone. Turn it off when you can charge and then check the battery records under normal conditions.

OnePlus support specifically recommends automatic brightness, installing the latest software available for the phone, and restarting. These are low-risk checks, but do them after recording battery use so you can tell whether the change mattered.
Brightness
High brightness increases screen consumption, especially during long periods of use. Enable automatic brightness in the phone’s display controls if it suits your environment. If you prefer manual brightness, reduce it to the lowest level that remains comfortable and compare similar screen-on use before and after.
Software updates
Check for the latest software offered for your exact model and region. OxygenOS features, menu labels, and battery behavior can differ by version, so write down the version shown in your phone’s software-information screen before seeking model-specific help. Do not assume an update is the cause of the drain merely because the timing is close; use the battery-use details to identify what is actually consuming power.
Restart
A normal restart is a reversible troubleshooting step after an app test or software update. Recheck the battery page afterward rather than judging success from one short interval. A restart that helps temporarily but is followed by the same drain points back to the app, setting, software, or hardware conditions that recur.

Check charging temperature and heat
OnePlus says charging outside 5°C to 35°C can reduce battery performance and standby duration. Keep the phone and charger within that range during charging, and avoid interpreting a hot charging session as a normal measure of battery life. Move the phone away from direct heat or cold, remove insulating coverings if they trap heat, and allow it to return to a moderate temperature before evaluating standby behavior.
Do not enable high-performance mode as a battery remedy. The OxygenOS 14 manual warns: “It may increase power consumption and cause your phone to heat up. Turn on this feature only when necessary.” If high performance is enabled for a demanding task, turn it off afterward and compare battery use under ordinary settings.
Separate charging-time heat from idle drain
- If the phone is hot only while charging, check the charging environment and high-performance settings first.
- If it remains warm and loses charge while idle, inspect battery usage for an app or process running in the background.
- If it loses charge mainly overnight, compare ordinary sleep behavior with Sleep standby optimization while accounting for its reduced notification frequency.
Look for normal battery wear without guessing a replacement threshold
OnePlus states that battery capacity decreases over time through normal component wear. That means an older phone can provide less runtime even when no app is misbehaving. The available guidance does not establish a universal percentage or age at which every OnePlus battery needs replacement, so do not use an invented threshold to make that decision.
Wear becomes more plausible when the battery-use list does not identify an unusual consumer, brightness and software checks change nothing, the phone loses runtime consistently under comparable use, or the problem persists after removing a recent app. Those observations do not prove hardware failure; they indicate that model-specific diagnosis is appropriate.

Use a staged troubleshooting plan
The order below keeps changes reversible and preserves useful evidence.
- Record the symptom. Note when the drain occurs, whether the screen is on, whether the phone is charging or idle, and the OxygenOS version and model.
- Inspect usage. Open Settings > Battery and record the leading apps or processes for the relevant period.
- Test a recent app. If the timing matches a new installation or update, uninstall it temporarily and restart.
- Apply one targeted app change. Use App battery management only for a demonstrated offender, keeping normal background behavior for time-sensitive apps.
- Adjust brightness. Try automatic brightness or a lower comfortable level and compare similar use.
- Update and restart. Install the latest software offered for the exact device, then restart.
- Check charging conditions. Keep charging between 5°C and 35°C and turn off high-performance mode unless it is needed.
- Use conservation modes for the right scenario. Choose Power saving for temporary runtime, Sleep standby optimization for acceptable overnight notification reduction, and Super power saving only for emergency low-battery use.
- Recheck the evidence. Look at the battery page again after a comparable period. Change one major variable at a time so you know what helped.
- Escalate if the pattern remains. Contact OnePlus support with the model, software version, battery-use records, timing, and steps already tried.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
Changing every setting at once
Turning on several restrictions, lowering brightness, uninstalling apps, and updating software simultaneously may reduce consumption, but it prevents you from identifying the cause. Make one meaningful change, observe a comparable period, and record the result.
Disabling all background activity
OnePlus explicitly warns that aggressive app restrictions can delay notifications or make apps function improperly. A phone that appears to save power but misses messages, navigation prompts, or authentication alerts is not configured correctly for its owner.
Treating a power-saving mode as a repair
Power saving can extend the next few hours; it does not explain why the phone began draining quickly. Keep the battery-use inspection in the workflow even when a conservation mode gives immediate relief.
Resetting too early
A factory reset erases local data and settings. OnePlus support places it after simpler checks, not at the beginning. Back up important data before considering it, and only use it when app, software, brightness, charging-condition, and support checks have not resolved the issue.
When to contact OnePlus support
Contact OnePlus support when abnormal drain continues after the targeted checks, when the battery page does not explain the loss, or when wear is suspected. Provide the exact model and region, OxygenOS version, approximate timing, charging temperature conditions, screenshots of battery usage, recently installed apps, and the settings you changed. This gives support a model-specific starting point instead of a generic “battery drains fast” report.
Support availability and repair options vary by region. If a factory reset is suggested, confirm that your backup is complete before proceeding. A repair or battery diagnosis may be appropriate when software and app checks do not account for the behavior, but no universal replacement threshold is established by the cited OnePlus guidance.
What a successful result looks like
A useful fix is not simply a lower percentage drop after restricting everything. You should be able to identify the condition that changed: a removed app no longer appears as an unexplained consumer, overnight loss improves with an accepted notification trade-off, brightness reduction helps during comparable screen use, or normal charging temperatures restore expected standby behavior. If the phone remains unreliable despite those tests, stop adding restrictions and move to model-specific support.
