OnePlus 5T in 2026: Specs, Software Support, and Whether It’s Worth Buying

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OnePlus 5T can still handle basic tasks, media playback and custom-ROM projects, but it is a poor choice for most people’s primary phone in 2026. OnePlus’ official software support ended with Android 10; its battery is now an aging component; and LTE-band support alone does not prove that a particular unit will work for calls on your carrier. Consider one only as a very cheap secondary or Wi-Fi device—or if you are comfortable checking its condition, network compatibility and unofficial software yourself.

What is the OnePlus 5T?

The OnePlus 5T is a 2017 flagship and a screen-and-design refresh of the OnePlus 5, not a new performance generation. It launched with a larger 18:9 display, slimmer bezels, a rear fingerprint reader in place of the OnePlus 5’s front reader, Face Unlock and a revised secondary rear camera. It retained the Snapdragon 835 platform, 3,300 mAh battery, aluminum construction, USB-C, Alert Slider and headphone jack.

OnePlus announced availability in the United States and Europe beginning November 21, 2017. The official US launch price for the 64GB model was $499. OnePlus’ launch announcement

What still makes the 5T useful?

Display and everyday tasks

The 6.01-inch AMOLED panel remains a pleasant feature for reading and watching video: AMOLED delivers deep blacks and strong contrast, while 1080p is adequate for ordinary viewing. OnePlus listed sRGB and DCI-P3 support, Reading Mode, Night Mode, Ambient Display and a sunlight-adaptive display mode. It does not have a high-refresh-rate panel. On a used unit, inspect for burn-in, dead pixels, uneven color, touch faults and poor-quality replacement glass or displays.

Simple, wired and enthusiast uses

A working 5T can still serve for messaging, email, music, video, light browsing and older games. The headphone jack, NFC, dual-SIM support and Alert Slider remain practical conveniences. As a Wi-Fi-only media player, music device, navigation backup or custom-ROM project, the age is less of a drawback than it is for a phone expected to handle sensitive accounts every day.

The Snapdragon 835 was a high-end processor in 2017, but it is not current flagship hardware. Expect basic navigation and lighter apps to be more realistic than demanding new games; modern games may need reduced settings, and sustained loads can expose heat and battery limitations. Current app support also depends on the installed operating system and each app’s requirements. Specific frame rates and runtime vary too much by device condition and software to promise here.

What has aged badly?

  • Official software: OnePlus’ last major Android version for the phone was Android 10. It should not be treated as a currently supported mainstream device or assumed to receive current OnePlus security updates.
  • Battery: The original 3,300 mAh capacity says nothing about the remaining capacity in a handset made in 2017. Degradation can make an otherwise working phone frustrating.
  • Camera: Daylight shots may be usable, but the camera lacks the sensors and computational processing of newer phones. Low-light results are inconsistent by current standards, and video lacks modern stabilization and processing. The second rear sensor should not be mistaken for a contemporary telephoto system.
  • Cellular service: The 5T has no 5G. Even LTE-band overlap cannot guarantee voice service: VoLTE provisioning, exact regional model, carrier certification, SIM lock and network policies all matter.
  • Newer conveniences: Do not assume modern water resistance, newer charging standards or long-term app compatibility from its original flagship status.

Software: Android 10 officially, newer Android through community ROMs

The 5T shipped with OxygenOS based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and received Android 10 as its final official major Android version. Android 11 and later require unofficial community software. Android version and security status are separate questions: seeing Android 10 on the phone does not mean it receives current security patches.

LineageOS lists the 5T under the codename dumpling. Its device page lists LineageOS 22.2 based on Android 15. This is support from the LineageOS project, not renewed OnePlus support, and availability can change. LineageOS device information and installation documentation

A custom ROM may extend the phone’s life, but it cannot guarantee that every hardware feature or app will work as expected. Banking, contactless payments, DRM-protected streaming and work-management apps can depend on the ROM, bootloader state and app integrity checks. Camera apps such as compatible GCam builds may help in some configurations, but compatibility and results vary; new software does not turn the old camera hardware into a modern system.

What installing a custom ROM involves

Do not follow an old generic flashing recipe: recovery, firmware, partition and Google-app requirements can vary by build. Use the current instructions linked from the LineageOS page for the exact device and build.

  1. Back up all personal data; bootloader unlocking erases the phone.
  2. Confirm the handset is the OnePlus 5T, codename dumpling, and check the current guide’s prerequisites and required files.
  3. Prepare a reliable USB cable, a charged phone and a computer with current ADB/Fastboot tools. Enable Developer Options, then USB debugging and OEM unlocking where available.
  4. Unlock the bootloader using the procedure specified for the device, understanding that the process wipes user data.
  5. Install the recovery and LineageOS build using the current device instructions. Treat Google apps as a separate, optional choice only if the guide says they are compatible.
  6. After setup, test calls, cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and any banking or work apps you rely on before making the phone your everyday device.

TWRP also lists support for the OnePlus 5/5T, but it is an optional enthusiast recovery tool, not a prerequisite for every current LineageOS installation. TWRP’s OnePlus 5/5T page

Battery life, charging and safety

OnePlus specified a non-removable 3,300 mAh battery and Dash Charge at 5V/4A with compatible equipment. OnePlus advertised enough charge for a day from about 30 minutes under its test conditions; that launch-era claim is not a prediction for an aged used phone. OnePlus product page

Assume a battery replacement may be needed unless the seller offers credible evidence of battery health and a return period. Watch for short runtime, unexpected shutdowns, abnormal charging heat, or a phone that disconnects when the cable moves. Test the USB-C port for secure charging and data transfer; generic USB-C equipment may charge the phone without reproducing Dash Charge behavior.

A swollen battery, lifting display or bulging rear panel is a safety issue. Stop using and charging the phone, do not press it flat, and arrange qualified repair. Do not buy a unit with those symptoms as a routine bargain.

Check carrier compatibility before buying

The US specifications list LTE bands including 2, 4, 5, 12, 17, 25, 26, 29, 30 and 66, but bands alone do not establish that calls and texts will work. Regional variants differ, and carrier certification, VoLTE provisioning and network shutdown policies can affect service. T-Mobile says it cannot test or guarantee all functions of non-T-Mobile devices and advises customers to verify compatibility. T-Mobile BYOD guidance

  1. Identify the exact model and region; ask for its IMEI before purchase.
  2. Check that IMEI against the carrier’s current BYOD/compatibility system. Confirm the phone is not blacklisted, financed or carrier-locked.
  3. Verify VoLTE support and provisioning with the carrier for that specific unit. A list of supported LTE bands is not enough.
  4. Insert a working SIM and place a call. Confirm it stays on LTE/VoLTE rather than relying on a legacy network that may no longer be available.
  5. Test SMS and mobile data, plus Wi-Fi calling if you need it, and keep a return window. T-Mobile’s unlock instructions describe its device-unlock path; a menu option does not itself prove that another carrier will accept the phone. T-Mobile device-unlock guidance

Used OnePlus 5T inspection checklist

Test the actual handset before payment when possible. A phone that boots over Wi-Fi can still be locked, blacklisted, damaged or unsuitable for your network.

  • Identity and status: Verify model and region, obtain the IMEI, check lock and blacklist status, and ask whether the bootloader or software has been modified. An unlocked bootloader is not automatically a defect, but establish what OS is installed and avoid relocking it with an incompatible build.
  • Battery and body: Look for swelling, a lifting screen or rear panel, unusual heat and shutdowns. Do not charge a swollen phone.
  • Screen and touch: Check black and white screens at low and high brightness for burn-in, dead pixels, color shift and touch problems; ask whether the panel was replaced.
  • USB-C: Test charging, data transfer and connection stability while gently moving the cable. Try compatible Dash equipment if fast charging matters.
  • Hardware controls and radios: Test cameras, fingerprint reader, Alert Slider, headphone jack, NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • Network and sale terms: Test a SIM for calls, SMS and mobile data, verify VoLTE with the carrier, and get a clear return policy.

OnePlus 5T versus a newer used phone

Buying priority OnePlus 5T Newer used phone
Software support Official major updates ended at Android 10; newer Android requires community software. Often offers longer official support, depending on model and manufacturer.
Camera Older sensors and processing; daylight can be usable, but low-light and video capabilities trail modern phones. Usually better camera processing and newer sensors.
Cellular 4G LTE only; exact model and VoLTE compatibility must be checked. May offer 5G and more current carrier certification, depending on model.
Battery Original battery is from a 2017 device; condition or replacement is a major uncertainty. May have a younger battery, though condition still needs checking.
Distinctive advantages Headphone jack, Alert Slider, aluminum body and a strong custom-ROM option for its age. Typically more modern conveniences, but model-dependent.

The OnePlus 5T is a sensible pick only when those older-phone advantages matter more than software support, camera quality and network certainty. It is not a generational performance upgrade over the OnePlus 5; the key differences are the display and design refresh.

Who should keep, buy or avoid it?

Keep or repair it if you already own one

If the handset is otherwise sound and your carrier accepts it, a battery replacement can be more rational than buying another 5T. Compare repair cost with the value of a newer phone, particularly if you need current software support or reliable work and banking apps.

Buy it as a secondary or enthusiast phone only with checks

A very inexpensive, unlocked, carrier-compatible unit with a healthy battery can still make sense as a backup, Wi-Fi media device or custom-ROM project. Factor in possible battery replacement and avoid paying extra for its old flagship label.

Choose something newer for a primary phone

Skip it if you need 5G, current manufacturer security updates, dependable banking or payment apps, a strong modern camera, or a phone you do not want to troubleshoot. Do not buy one for US mobile service without verifying the exact unit’s VoLTE and carrier compatibility.
