Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series has the longer published software-support commitment than the OnePlus 13. In this flagship comparison, Samsung promises more major Android upgrades and a longer security-update period. The result applies to these specific models, not automatically to every Samsung or OnePlus phone.
Software support has two separate parts: major Android-version upgrades and security updates. They have different meanings, starting-point rules and delivery caveats, so the comparison below treats them separately.

Galaxy S25 versus OnePlus 13: support at a glance
| Phone | Major Android upgrades | Security-support commitment | Support clock | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy S25 series | Seven generations of OS upgrades | Seven years of security updates | From global launch | Samsung says timing can vary by model, network provider and market. Samsung’s global announcement |
| OnePlus 13 | Four Android-version upgrades beyond the preinstalled Android 15 version, according to a reported OnePlus clarification | Six-year defined security-support period, ending 7 January 2031 | Defined in OnePlus’s UK product-security declaration | Delivery timing can vary by country, region and model. The detailed OS count comes from secondary reporting; the official page directly establishes the security period. OnePlus product-security page Droid Life report |
On the published policies, the Galaxy S25 leads on both dimensions that matter most to a long-term buyer: the number of major Android changes and the length of security coverage. The OnePlus 13 still has a clearly stated, multi-year security period, but its published window is shorter.

Major Android and operating-system upgrades
An OS upgrade moves the phone to a new major Android release and usually brings changes to system behavior, privacy controls, interface components and platform APIs. Samsung also describes its commitment in terms of One UI upgrades, which are the company’s interface and feature layer on top of Android. A promised number of generations is therefore a count of major-version transitions, not a guarantee that every new feature from a future phone will appear on an older one.

OnePlus’s reported clarification needs careful reading. The OnePlus 13 shipped with Android 15, and the clarification counts four later Android-version upgrades beyond that starting build. Counting the preinstalled version as an “update” would make the policy sound different even though the device would receive the same sequence of later versions. This is why upgrade counts from different companies should not be compared without checking what each company uses as the starting point.
Samsung’s “seven generations” wording should also be kept in its original form. It is not automatically interchangeable with “seven upgrades after the version in the box.” The meaningful comparison is the manufacturer’s stated commitment for each phone, the Android version installed at launch, and the number of later versions explicitly described.
Security updates
Security updates address newly discovered vulnerabilities and can continue after major Android upgrades have ended. A security-support period is a coverage commitment, not a promise that every patch will arrive on the same day worldwide or that every month will contain an update for every model. The manufacturer’s support window also does not guarantee that a carrier-approved build will be released immediately after an unlocked version.

A device can remain usable after that date, but newly discovered flaws are outside the manufacturer’s stated coverage. That is different from saying the phone stops working on the final support day.
When the clock starts
The buyer’s purchase date is not automatically the start date. Samsung states its S25 commitment from global launch. OnePlus publishes a product-security period and an end date for the UK declaration. A phone purchased late in its life therefore has less remaining support than a launch-day purchase, even though the policy attached to the model has not changed.
This is especially important for discounted inventory and used phones. Before treating a low price as a bargain, identify when the model entered its support period and compare that with the published end date. “Six years of support” describes the model’s defined window; it does not reset when a second owner activates the phone.
Samsung Galaxy S25 support policy
What Samsung promises for the S25 series
Samsung’s global announcement gives the Galaxy S25 series a seven-generation OS-upgrade commitment and seven years of security updates from global launch. Those are separate promises: one concerns major Android and One UI releases, while the other concerns vulnerability fixes. The commitment is stated for the S25 series rather than for every Samsung device sold under every product tier.
Samsung adds a practical caveat that release timing can vary according to the model, network provider and market. A Galaxy S25 bought through a carrier may therefore receive an update later than a factory-unlocked unit, and two countries can have different schedules even when they use the same model name.
Why the S24 comparison matters
Samsung’s own Gulf support page lists a shorter policy for the Galaxy S24 series: four years of OS updates and five years of security patches. The page was last updated 30 June 2026 and is region-specific, so it should not be silently generalized to every market. It is useful evidence that Samsung’s support policy changes by generation rather than applying uniformly to all Galaxy phones. Samsung Gulf’s S24 support page

Samsung’s earlier policy was different again
In a 2022 announcement, Samsung said selected devices could receive up to four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades. That historical statement explains why older buying guides may show smaller numbers than the S25 commitment. It is not a substitute for checking the policy attached to the exact model and generation you are considering. Samsung’s 2022 OS-upgrade announcement
OnePlus 13 support policy
Security coverage is defined through 7 January 2031
OnePlus’s UK product-security declaration lists a six-year security-support period for the OnePlus 13, ending 7 January 2031. The declaration is dated 11 December 2024. This is the clearest official figure for the phone’s security coverage. It does not mean that a patch is guaranteed on a particular day, or that every regional software build follows the UK schedule.
The same OnePlus page lists product-specific periods rather than one universal promise for the entire catalogue. That structure is a reminder to check the exact model: a cheaper or older OnePlus handset can have a different end date even if it uses a similar version of OxygenOS.
How the Android-version count was clarified
A March 2025 report from Droid Life relayed a OnePlus clarification that the OnePlus 13 receives four Android-version upgrades after its Android 15 launch version. Because this detailed count is reported second-hand, it should be described as a reported policy clarification, not as wording copied from the official OnePlus security table. Droid Life’s report
The distinction matters when comparing marketing language. “Four upgrades” means four later Android versions; it does not mean four years of security updates, and it does not include the Android version already installed when the phone was sold.
Head-to-head: where the policies differ
Major-version longevity
The S25’s published OS commitment is longer than the OnePlus 13’s reported sequence of later Android upgrades. If your priority is receiving future Android platform changes, Samsung has the stronger stated policy for these two phones.
Major upgrades can also be phased. A phone may be eligible for a release while its carrier or regional firmware is still being prepared, so eligibility does not equal simultaneous global availability.
Security longevity
Samsung’s S25 security window is one year longer than the OnePlus 13 period shown in the comparison table. Security coverage is particularly important if you keep a phone for banking, work authentication or several years of personal data. Once a device leaves its defined security period, it may continue to function, but newly discovered vulnerabilities are no longer covered by the manufacturer’s stated commitment.
Clarity of the evidence
The two policies are documented differently. Samsung states both S25 figures in its launch announcement. OnePlus states the security end date directly on its product-security page, while the detailed Android-upgrade count is available through reporting on a clarification. When comparing phones, note not only the number but also whether it comes from a current manufacturer page, a regional declaration or secondary reporting.

Delivery speed and regional variation
Neither policy promises identical timing in every country. Samsung explicitly names model, network provider and market as variables. OnePlus likewise cautions that delivery timing can vary by country, region and model. A support commitment answers “how long is this model intended to remain covered?” It does not answer “what day will my carrier release this month’s build?”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to compare the numbers fairly
Use four columns when evaluating any two phones: major-version changes, security duration, start point and delivery caveats. Do not put “seven generations” and “four upgrades” in the same column without an explanation of the starting Android version. Also record whether a date is a precise end date or a general year count. The OnePlus 13 has both a six-year description and a stated 7 January 2031 endpoint; Samsung states seven years from global launch.
If you are buying a phone partway through its life, calculate remaining coverage rather than repeating the launch promise. A model with the longer original policy can have fewer months left than a newer model with a shorter policy. This simple check is useful for clearance stock, imports and second-hand listings.
Why the exact model and generation matter
Brand-level statements such as “Samsung supports phones longer” or “OnePlus updates are shorter” are too broad to guide a purchase. Samsung’s S24 and S25 policies already demonstrate how much the answer can change between successive generations. OnePlus’s product-security table also assigns different periods to different models.
Check the full model name, storage or regional variant where relevant, and the manufacturer’s support page before buying. A phone with a longer policy can still have less remaining support if it launched earlier than a newer phone with a shorter policy.

How carrier and regional software affect the experience
Carrier review can delay an otherwise eligible update
Samsung Canada explains that carrier-locked devices can be delayed while a carrier reviews and approves the software. This is a delivery issue, not necessarily a loss of eligibility. An unlocked model may follow a different release path from the same phone sold through a carrier. Samsung Canada’s One UI update guidance
Market-specific pages should be read in context
Support pages may be written for a particular country. The S24 evidence cited above comes from Samsung Gulf, while the OnePlus 13 security declaration is on OnePlus’s UK site. These pages establish the policies published for those contexts; they should not be treated as proof that every market uses identical dates, firmware channels or carrier procedures.
What an imported phone changes
An imported handset can carry a different regional model identifier, update channel or carrier relationship from the version sold locally. The headline support number may still describe the same family, but delivery instructions and eligibility checks can differ. Confirm the region covered by the declaration, whether local network bands and services are supported, and how warranty or carrier approval works before relying on an imported device for a long ownership period.
Choosing between the two phones by use case
Choose the Galaxy S25 when update longevity is the deciding factor
- You plan to keep the phone through several Android generations.
- You want the longer published security window among these two models.
- You prefer a policy stated directly by the manufacturer for both OS upgrades and security updates.
- You are willing to check carrier and market timing rather than assuming a global release date applies locally.
Choose the OnePlus 13 when its other priorities outweigh the shorter policy
- You prefer the OnePlus hardware, software experience or pricing for reasons outside this support comparison.
- A defined security period ending in 2031 covers the length of time you realistically expect to keep the phone.
- You understand that the Android-upgrade count comes from a reported clarification and that regional delivery can differ.
Neither choice should be based on the brand name alone. Compare the remaining support at the moment of purchase, the region in which the phone will be used and whether the device is carrier-locked. If your expected ownership period ends before either model’s security deadline, the difference may matter less than hardware, price and update delivery in your market. If you plan to keep the phone for many years, Samsung’s extra stated coverage gives it more headroom.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the exact model. Record the series, generation and regional version instead of searching for a brand-wide policy.
- Separate the two promises. Find the number of major Android upgrades and the security-support end date; do not substitute one for the other.
- Identify the starting point. Check whether the manufacturer counts from global launch, product launch or another stated date.
- Check the local support page. Read the page for your country or region, especially if you will use a carrier-branded phone.
- Confirm the sales channel. Ask whether the device is unlocked or carrier-locked and how that channel handles approvals.
- Estimate remaining years. Subtract the purchase date from the published end date rather than assuming a newly purchased phone has its full original policy remaining.
- Check the Android version in the box. This prevents you from treating the preinstalled release as one of the later upgrades when the company counts only subsequent versions.
- Save the policy link. Manufacturer support pages can change, so keep a record of the model and the date you checked it.
What these commitments do not guarantee
- A fixed monthly schedule: A support period does not promise a patch every month or the same release day in every country.
- Identical features on every model: An Android or One UI version can contain hardware-dependent features that are unavailable on another device.
- Permanent hardware service: Software eligibility does not guarantee spare parts, battery replacement or repair availability for the entire support period.
- Support for every product tier: A flagship policy cannot be applied automatically to a mid-range, budget or previous-generation phone.
- Protection after the stated window: The phone may continue working beyond its security period, but the manufacturer has no longer promised coverage for newly discovered vulnerabilities.
- Instant availability of every major release: Eligibility can exist before a carrier or regional firmware build is approved and distributed.
Frequently asked questions
Does Samsung always support phones longer than OnePlus?
No. This conclusion is limited to the Galaxy S25 series and OnePlus 13. Policies vary by generation and tier. Samsung’s S24 support page, for example, lists four years of OS updates and five years of security patches, while the S25 has the newer seven-year/seven-generation commitment.
Does the OnePlus 13 get four or five Android upgrades?
The reported OnePlus clarification says four Android-version upgrades beyond the Android 15 version installed at launch. Describing Android 15 itself as an additional upgrade would use a different counting method, so always state the starting version.
Is the OnePlus 13 supported until 7 January 2031 in every country?
7 January 2031 is the end date listed in OnePlus’s UK product-security declaration. OnePlus cautions that delivery timing varies by country, region and model. Check the declaration and support information for the market where the phone will be used.
Does seven years mean seven years of Android updates every month?
No. Samsung’s statement separates seven generations of OS upgrades from seven years of security updates. Neither phrase promises a fixed monthly schedule or identical release dates across carriers and markets.

Will an unlocked phone update faster than a carrier phone?
It can follow a different schedule. Samsung Canada says carrier-locked devices may be delayed while the carrier reviews and approves software. That delay concerns delivery, not necessarily the phone’s eligibility under the policy.
What happens when security support ends?
The phone may continue to operate and run its existing software, but newly discovered vulnerabilities are outside the manufacturer’s stated security coverage. Consider replacement or another risk-management plan if the device handles sensitive data.
Should I compare support by years or by update count?
Use both. OS-upgrade count tells you about major Android-version changes; the security end date tells you how long vulnerability coverage is defined. Also check the clock’s starting point and calculate how much time remains when you buy.
Does a longer software policy guarantee a longer-lasting battery or hardware?
No. Software support does not guarantee battery capacity, spare parts, repair availability or identical performance throughout the period. Those are separate ownership considerations.
Bottom line for a long-term Android buyer
For the specific comparison of Samsung Galaxy S25 series and OnePlus 13, Samsung offers the longer published software-support commitment. The S25 leads in both major Android-upgrade generations and security-update duration, while the OnePlus 13 provides a defined six-year security period ending 7 January 2031 and a reported four-upgrade Android sequence beyond Android 15.
