Windows can reveal the complete name with its built-in File name extensions setting. Turning it on makes a file such as invoice.pdf.exe visibly executable before you open it.
Why a “PDF” filename can be deceptive
Windows treats a filename as a name portion plus an extension. The final extension is the important part: it helps Windows identify the file type and determines what may launch when you double-click it. If extensions are hidden, a malicious file named invoice.pdf.exe may appear in File Explorer as invoice.pdf, making it easier to mistake for a document.

Showing extensions does not prove that a file is safe. A genuine-looking .pdf can still be malicious, corrupted or sent by an untrusted source. It is a fast way to expose a common disguise, not a replacement for scanning and cautious handling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurn on full filename extensions in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View.
- Open Show and select File name extensions. On some Windows releases, Microsoft places the same checkbox in the Show/hide group under View.
- Return to the downloaded file and read the entire filename, including the final suffix.
Microsoft’s documented wording is: “In File Explorer under View, in the Show/hide group, select the File name extensions check box.” The option is built into Windows and does not require a purchase. On a managed work computer, an administrator may control whether the setting can be changed.

What to do when the final extension is unexpected
Confirm the last suffix
When you expect a PDF, the filename should end in .pdf. Treat a final .exe, .scr, .js, .bat, .cmd, .msi or another executable or script extension as a warning. The text before the final dot does not change what Windows identifies as the file’s ending type.
Do not double-click it
Do not open an unexpected executable or script simply to see what it contains. Delete it if you do not need it, or preserve it without launching it while you investigate the sender and download source.

Scan the individual file
- Right-click the suspicious file.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
- Wait for the result before moving, sharing or opening the file.
Microsoft documents this right-click scan for individual files. A clean result is useful evidence, but it does not make an untrusted download automatically legitimate; verify that the message, website or person who supplied it is expected.
Use a protected PDF viewer for files you trust
After the filename and source check out, open the document in a maintained viewer with a protected or sandboxed mode. Adobe says, “Protected Mode is enabled by default in Acrobat to help secure your system.” Protected View or Protected Mode limits what an untrusted PDF can do, adding a layer of defense if a document contains harmful content. Keep the viewer and Windows updated, and avoid enabling document features or external links unless the file’s source requires them.

How the safeguards compare
| Approach | Reveals the true final extension? | Scans before opening? | Isolates PDF activity? | Cost | Managed-device ease |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| File name extensions | Yes | No | No | Built into Windows; no purchase | Simple unless restricted by policy |
| Microsoft Defender right-click scan | No | Yes | No | Built into supported Windows installations | Simple, subject to administrator settings |
| Protected or sandboxed PDF viewer mode | No | No | Yes, by limiting document actions or system interaction | Depends on the viewer | May be configured centrally |
These controls address different failure points. The extension setting helps you recognize a disguised launcher, Defender checks the file before execution, and protected viewing reduces what a PDF can do after you open it. Using all three is stronger than relying on the filename alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A quick decision checklist for downloaded PDFs
- Is File name extensions enabled in File Explorer?
- Does the final suffix exactly match what you expected, such as
.pdf? - Was the file requested or sent by a source you can verify independently?
- Has Microsoft Defender scanned it without reporting a threat?
- Are you opening it in a maintained viewer with protected or sandboxed mode?
- Does the document ask you to run a program, enable unusual features or follow an unexpected external link?
If any answer raises doubt, stop rather than experimenting. A PDF-looking name is only one clue; the final extension, provenance, scan result and viewer protections together provide a more reliable safety check.
