But that does not mean security updates end at the same time. And while Samsung has started One UI 9’s gradual rollout to newer devices, it has not announced an S23 release date. Whether the update is “worth the pain” cannot yet be answered with S23-specific evidence: the cited sources establish neither an installation problem nor a performance or battery issue on this phone.
Will the Galaxy S23 get One UI 9?
It is expected to. Samsung announced four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades for eligible Galaxy devices in February 2022. The Galaxy S23 launched with Android 13, and Samsung’s update record shows Android 16 for one S23 variant. Under that four-generation commitment, Android 17—paired with One UI 9—is the expected fourth and final major generation for the S23 family.

The distinction is that this conclusion combines Samsung’s general policy and the S23’s update history with secondary reporting. Samsung’s policy announcement does not name every S23 model as receiving Android 17. SamMobile reported a Samsung support confirmation about the S23 FE and extended the policy conclusion to the S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra. That supports “expected,” rather than a model-by-model final-update announcement from Samsung. Samsung’s 2022 upgrade-policy announcement and SamMobile’s report provide the relevant context.
When will One UI 9 arrive on the S23?
Samsung has not given an S23 date. In its September 16, 2026 announcement, Samsung said One UI 9 had begun rolling out to the S26 series and was already available on the Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, and Z Flip8. It described a gradual expansion to other devices, but did not name an S23 schedule. The announcement is a dated rollout snapshot, not a promise of when a particular S23 in a particular market will receive the update. Samsung’s rollout announcement is the source for those details.

Availability can differ by device, country, and network operator. For the phone-specific status, use Samsung’s update record for the exact model and region, then check the phone’s own software-update screen. For example, Samsung’s US unlocked Galaxy S23 SM-S911U1 record lists Android 16 and the August 5, 2026 security patch in a build released September 3, 2026. That record applies to that variant, not every S23 worldwide; Samsung cautions that update details can vary by model, country, and operator. Samsung’s SM-S911U1 update log shows the entry.
Does “last major update” mean security updates stop?
No. Major Android and One UI upgrades are separate from security patches. Samsung’s current security-update scope lists the Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, and S23 FE for monthly firmware security updates. That listing means the S23 family remains in the stated monthly scope; it does not establish a final security-support date for any model. Samsung’s 2022 policy said select devices could receive up to five years of security updates, which should not be read as a guaranteed end date for each S23. See Samsung’s current security-update scope and its 2022 policy announcement.

Is One UI 9 likely to be painful on the Galaxy S23?
The available evidence does not establish that it will be buggy, slow, difficult to install, or hard on battery life. There is no cited S23-specific test or published comparison here that can show whether performance, battery endurance, stability, or feature support will improve or worsen. “Pain” is a reasonable concern to investigate, but it is not a known property of the update.

- Stability: whether S23 owners report installation failures, crashes, or other reproducible problems, and whether Samsung provides a fix.
- Battery and performance: reports or measurements after the update that distinguish initial settling from persistent changes.
- Features: confirmation that the One UI 9 features you care about actually work on your S23; features can vary across devices.
- Recovery: practical, model-specific guidance if an update fails or causes a problem.
A report about another Galaxy model, or an early rollout build, is not proof of how the final release will behave on an S23. The cited rollout announcement gives no S23-specific quality assessment.

There is no evidence-based reason in the cited sources to rush into the update—or to avoid it. If your S23 is working well, you can wait until the update is offered to your variant and credible S23-specific reports give you a clearer picture. If you install promptly, first verify the release is available for your model and market and follow Samsung’s instructions for that update. Your choice should turn on the phone’s actual condition, your need for the new software, and the evidence available when it reaches your device.

- It offers a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 48-120 Hz refresh rate plus up to ~ 1750 nits peak brightness and “Vision Booster,” meaning the screen stays bright and viewable even in strong sunlight — great if you use your phone outdoors a lot.
Replacing a functioning S23 is not an automatic consequence of its expected final major upgrade. The family remains on Samsung’s monthly security-update scope, while the cited sources provide no replacement-cost comparison or evidence that One UI 9 will make S23 hardware inadequate. Reconsider only if the phone no longer meets your needs or later, clearly identified evidence changes the trade-off for you.
