The Straw Hat Pirates have ten official members: Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbe. Their effectiveness comes from a division of labor: navigation, cooking, medicine, shipbuilding and helming keep the expedition alive, while swordsmanship, sniping, archaeology, music and captaincy cover combat and specialist needs.
This spoiler-light guide explains what each member does aboard the crew and the defining ability that supports that job. The roster and descriptions reflect official ONE PIECE.com profiles accessed on October 13, 2026; official pages can change as the manga continues.

The ten Straw Hats at a glance
The official crew record includes ten people. It also records two important ships, the Going Merry and the Thousand Sunny, but neither vessel is counted as a human crew member.

This is a role guide, not a strength ranking. The official profiles establish what each person does and which abilities define them, but they do not provide one objective scale that can place every Straw Hat in order.

Monkey D. Luffy: captain
Luffy is the crew’s captain and the person who supplies its central goal: becoming the Pirate King. His job is broader than winning fights. He chooses the course the crew will pursue, accepts responsibility for the group’s decisions and gives the other members a reason to sail together.
His defining physical trait is a rubber-based body. The official profile identifies both the Gomu Gomu no Mi and the Hito Hito no Mi, Mythical Zoan, Model Nika. For a spoiler-light understanding, the important point is that his Devil Fruit powers let him fight with extraordinary elasticity while also connecting his abilities to the Nika model. The exact presentation of those powers develops with the story, so readers should treat later forms and techniques as continuing manga material rather than a fixed, closed list.
Luffy’s value to the crew is therefore twofold: captaincy keeps the group focused on its chosen adventure, and his unusual fruit powers make him the frontline leader when a confrontation cannot be avoided.
Roronoa Zoro: combatant and swordsman
Zoro is the Straw Hats’ principal swordsman and combatant. He pursues the ambition of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, a goal that explains why swordsmanship is not merely a weapon choice for him but the core of his identity and training.
Unlike several crew members, Zoro’s defining contribution is not presented as a Devil Fruit ability. His effectiveness comes from discipline, physical conditioning, battle judgment and mastery of his swords. His distinctive three-sword style gives him a recognizable method for attacking and defending at close range.
On the ship, that specialization fills the crew’s dedicated combat role. Zoro can protect crewmates during boarding actions, confront powerful opponents directly and operate as a dependable second line when Luffy is occupied. The official material describes his role and ambition without supplying a universal numerical power ranking, so comparisons should stay qualitative rather than pretending there is an official order of strength.
Nami: navigator
Nami is responsible for getting the ship where it needs to go. Navigation in the One Piece world is a survival skill: routes, currents and weather can change quickly, and a wrong decision can endanger everyone aboard. Her ability to read conditions and choose a course is as important to an expedition as any fighter’s technique.

She combines practical navigation with meteorological knowledge. The Clima-Tact allows her to create localized weather effects, including lightning attacks. That tool does not replace her expertise; it gives her scientific understanding a way to affect the immediate battlefield.
Nami’s contribution illustrates why the crew cannot be understood as a list of fighters. She protects the voyage before a fight begins by interpreting the sea, then can use the same knowledge defensively or offensively when trouble reaches the deck. Her weather work is a crew-wide resource, not simply a personal attack style.
Usopp: sniper
Usopp serves as the crew’s sniper. His marksmanship lets him engage targets that are too distant, too exposed or too dangerous for a close-range fighter to approach. Precision and patience make his role different from the direct power of Luffy, Zoro or Sanji.
He is also an inventor who builds tools and adapts ammunition for particular situations. That variety means his equipment can solve problems that a standard weapon cannot: he can exploit an opponent’s position, create a distraction or support a teammate from afar. His later use of Pop Green seeds adds plant-based combat options to the toolkit.

A sniper can watch an area, identify an opening and change the shape of a confrontation before enemies reach the rest of the crew. The combination of distance, inventions and specialized ammunition is what makes his contribution distinct; it is not simply a weaker version of a swordsman’s or martial artist’s job.
Sanji: cook
Sanji is the Straw Hats’ cook, making food a strategic responsibility rather than background decoration. Long voyages require reliable meals, and the cook’s decisions affect the crew’s stamina and ability to recover between encounters. Sanji’s personal dream is to find the All Blue, which ties his profession to an exploration goal of its own.
In combat, he relies on powerful leg techniques. Keeping his hands for cooking gives his fighting style a clear practical logic: the same person who prepares meals can enter a fight without sacrificing the tools needed to feed everyone later. His leg-focused attacks also make him a fast, mobile close-combat specialist.

- Set Sail with your favorite pirates - Brook, also known as "Soul King" is one of the two swordsmen of the Straw Hat Pirates and the crew musician. He ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi devil fruit which gave him the power to return to life after his death, and he now has devloped powers to control the souls of others, and himself. Brook was originally part of the Rumbar Pirates but died, and since his soul took so long to return he came back as a skeleton with his iconic afro

Sanji therefore fills two essential spaces. He sustains the crew day after day, and he can defend it when a situation turns physical. The official profile emphasizes these functions rather than reducing him to a list of named attacks.
Tony Tony Chopper: doctor
Chopper is the crew’s doctor. His responsibility is diagnosis, treatment and emergency care when injuries or illness threaten the voyage. A ship that repeatedly encounters dangerous environments needs medical expertise on board, not just strong fighters.
Chopper is a reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi. The fruit gives him human-related capabilities and allows him to transform into forms suited to different situations. Those forms let him adjust his physical characteristics for medical work, travel or combat without changing the underlying reason he is aboard: the crew needs a physician.
His transformations and medical knowledge work together. A particular form can help him examine a patient, move through a crisis or withstand a fight, while his clinical role determines when treatment takes priority over combat. Chopper’s importance is easiest to see in emergencies, when the crew’s survival depends on care after the action rather than victory during it.
Nico Robin: archaeologist
Robin is the Straw Hats’ archaeologist. She studies the Poneglyphs and seeks the true history, giving the crew a specialist whose work reaches beyond navigation or treasure hunting. Her knowledge helps interpret evidence that ordinary combat skills cannot decode.
Recommended Free Tools
Her Hana Hana no Mi lets her sprout body parts in multiple locations. She can use that ability for grapples, strikes and larger constructs, making it useful in close combat, restraint and situations that require reaching an otherwise inaccessible place.
The fruit’s flexibility mirrors her professional role. Robin can investigate while remaining at a distance, control several points at once or support allies by immobilizing an opponent. Her historical expertise and her ability to create additional limbs serve different purposes, but together they make her both the crew’s primary researcher and a highly adaptable specialist in a confrontation.

Franky: shipwright
Franky is the shipwright: the member responsible for constructing, maintaining and repairing the vessel. He built the Thousand Sunny, so his role covers the ship’s original design as well as the ongoing work required to keep it seaworthy.
Shipwright duties are continuous. Damage, mechanical failures and changing travel demands all require practical engineering decisions, and Franky is the person who can diagnose those problems from inside the crew. His work protects every other role because navigation, cooking and combat are useless if the ship cannot safely carry the crew.

Those built-in systems give him a combat identity that grows directly from his engineering expertise: he is both the person who maintains the ship’s machinery and a living example of mechanical design. The Thousand Sunny is therefore not just transport in the crew’s story; it is a product of Franky’s specialist contribution.
Brook: musician and swordsman
Brook is the crew’s musician and also a swordsman. Music gives the ship performance, morale and a distinctive social presence, while swordplay supplies a separate combat function. His two roles coexist rather than competing: he can contribute to the crew’s culture and still fight when necessary.
The Yomi Yomi no Mi brought Brook back to life. His official profile also describes soul-related abilities, which expand the ways he can operate beyond ordinary swordsmanship. Music is part of that power set as well as his profession, allowing performance and combat to support each other.
Brook’s place aboard the ship demonstrates that a practical crew also needs identity and morale. His sword skills add another specialist fighter, but his musical role gives the Straw Hats a performer whose contribution cannot be measured only by battlefield results.
Jinbe: helmsman
Jinbe is the Straw Hats’ helmsman, the person who directly steers the ship. A navigator can read conditions and select a route, but the helmsman turns that plan into precise movement through dangerous water. The distinction matters most when currents, weather or enemy action demand immediate control.

He is a fish-man karate master with extensive maritime combat experience. Fish-Man Karate provides his defining fighting discipline, while his familiarity with the sea supports the practical demands of the helm.
Jinbe’s arrival completes an important operational gap in the roster. The crew has someone dedicated to navigation and someone dedicated to steering, with each skill reinforcing the other. His combat experience also means the helmsman is not helpless if the deck becomes a battlefield.
How the roles work as one crew
The Straw Hats divide responsibilities into two overlapping groups. Practical ship duties keep the voyage functioning:
- Navigation: Nami reads the sea and weather and chooses routes.
- Helming: Jinbe controls the ship’s immediate movement.
- Cooking: Sanji feeds the crew and supports endurance.
- Medicine: Chopper treats injuries and illness.
- Shipbuilding: Franky maintains and repairs the Thousand Sunny.
Specialist and combat duties protect that operation and give the voyage direction:
- Captaincy: Luffy makes the central decisions and leads the adventure.
- Swordsmanship: Zoro and Brook provide distinct close-combat expertise.
- Sniping: Usopp controls distance with precision and inventions.
- Archaeology: Robin interprets Poneglyphs and pursues the true history.
- Music: Brook contributes performance and morale alongside his fighting.
Several members cross categories. Nami can fight with weather effects, Robin’s research ability also creates combat options, and Franky’s engineering appears in his cyborg body. Those overlaps are why the crew functions as a team rather than as ten isolated character classes.
Devil Fruits are only part of the Straw Hats’ abilities
Luffy, Chopper, Robin and Brook have defining Devil Fruit powers, while Franky’s abilities come from cyborg engineering. Other members demonstrate that the crew’s strength does not depend on supernatural fruits: Zoro’s swordsmanship, Nami’s navigation and meteorology, Usopp’s marksmanship and inventions, Sanji’s cooking and leg techniques, and Jinbe’s fish-man karate all matter without being framed as Devil Fruit powers.
This distinction is useful when learning the roster. A fruit explains one character’s unusual capabilities, but a ship still needs someone who can read the weather, repair a hull, prepare food, steer through difficult water or treat an injury. The official profiles present these skills alongside powers, not beneath them.

The official crew record also lists the Going Merry and the Thousand Sunny. They are ships rather than additional human members. The Thousand Sunny is especially connected to Franky because he built it and maintains it, while the wider roster depends on the vessel as the platform for navigation, cooking, medicine, combat and daily life.
How current is this roster?
This guide uses the ten-member roster shown on official ONE PIECE.com pages accessed October 13, 2026, including Jinbe. Character profiles and roles can be updated as the manga continues, so readers following future chapters should treat later official changes as superseding a static guide. The descriptions here intentionally avoid ranking strength, revealing plot outcomes or turning developing story details into permanent conclusions.
