Laimosemion laranja is a newly described killifish known from just three small seasonal pools in Brazil’s Amapá state. Its entire known range covers less than about 10 square miles, so a major spill, sediment event or earthmoving project affecting those pools could eliminate every known population.
Researchers recommend treating the species as endangered and expanding the nearby Rio Cajari Extractive Reserve. The fish had not yet been added to the IUCN Red List at the time of the 2026 reports.

What was discovered?
Laimosemion laranja was formally described in 2026 as a valid species in the killifish family Rivulidae. The describing paper, “A new killifish of the genus Laimosemion (Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae) from Rio Cajari in the Brazilian Amazon,” used both morphological and molecular evidence. The publication is available through Zenodo, and Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid at the California Academy of Sciences.

The name “laranja” refers to the males’ orange markings and to Laranjal do Jari, connecting the fish’s appearance with the place where it was found. Lead researcher Yuri Abrantes explained: “We wanted to choose a name that would highlight a characteristic of the fish while also fostering a sense of connection with the people of the region where it was discovered.”

What does Laimosemion laranja look like?
Males carry the vivid pattern
The fish is tiny: individuals described in the discovery account measure less than 1.2 inches long. Males have orange spots across the front half of the body, orange V-shaped bars toward the rear, and fins combining bright orange and blue. Females are less colorful, with yellowish or greenish fins and no comparable bars. These differences help researchers distinguish the sexes in the field and contribute to the species’ name.
It is a seasonal-pool killifish
Rivulidae includes killifish adapted to temporary wetlands. In some Amazonian species, adults reproduce before seasonal pools dry, leaving embryos in damp mud that pause development until rain refills the habitat. That is family-level context; the available description does not establish that every detail of this survival strategy has been demonstrated specifically for L. laranja.

Where does it live?
The species is known from the lower Rio Cajari drainage, near Laranjal do Jari. Researchers found it in only three small seasonal pools beside streams. Their combined known area is under roughly 10 square miles, an exceptionally restricted distribution for a vertebrate species. The three pools are the only confirmed locations in the discovery account; a wider range has not been established.
Why could one disaster eliminate it?
A small range turns an ordinary local disturbance into a possible species-level emergency. The reported sites already face human pressure: one pool has water discolored by mining sediment, another contains plastic pollution, and deforestation and urban expansion affect the surrounding landscape.

A spill entering the drainage, a severe sediment pulse, road or building work that fills a pool, or contamination that reaches several pools during the same event could destroy the habitat on which the known population depends. “Could wipe out” describes this exposure created by the species’ limited documented range; it does not mean that extinction has already occurred or that every future event would have the same result.
What evidence supports the species’ status?
The researchers separated L. laranja from related killifish using visible anatomical traits and DNA data. A 2026 account of the study reports a 5.3% mitochondrial-DNA difference from its nearest relatives. Taken together with the tiny known distribution and ongoing disturbance, those findings led the researchers to say the fish appears to meet criteria for an endangered classification.

The IUCN status is still pending
The discovery reports state that the IUCN had not yet listed L. laranja on its Red List. The researchers’ endangered recommendation is therefore a scientific assessment and conservation proposal, not an official IUCN category.

Protect the pools immediately
Stopping new sediment, plastic and other pollution at the three known pools is the fastest way to reduce the risk of losing the documented population. Preventing damage from clearing, construction and mining-related runoff matters because even a single pool may represent a significant share of the species’ remaining habitat.
Best Value
Expand protected-area coverage
The researchers recommend expanding the neighboring Rio Cajari Extractive Reserve so that the fish’s seasonal pools and their surrounding drainage receive stronger protection. Reserve boundaries that cover only nearby forest but exclude the pools would not address the direct habitat risk.
Include local stewardship in protection
Monitoring by residents and authorities can provide early warning of discoloration, dumping, clearing or changing water levels. The species’ name itself reflects a desire to connect scientific recognition with the people of Laranjal do Jari. The available reports support habitat protection, pollution control and reserve expansion; they do not document a captive-breeding program for this fish.
Why this discovery matters beyond one small fish
Laimosemion laranja is not a rediscovered aquarium variety. It is a formally recognized species whose existence became visible through taxonomic work in a heavily pressured Amazonian landscape. Its case shows why finding a species is only the first step: when scientists discover an animal in a handful of seasonal pools, mapping and protecting those exact habitats can be as urgent as the description itself.
