Why Voskhod 1 was a milestone
Before Voskhod 1, no crewed spacecraft had carried more than one person. By sending three cosmonauts into orbit together, the Soviet Union made the first multi-person crewed spaceflight—and, more specifically, the first three-person crewed flight. NASA’s historical flight table identifies Voskhod 1 as that first three-person mission (NASA’s historical flight table).

The distinction matters when comparing early crewed missions. NASA identifies Voskhod 1 as the first three-person crew, while Gemini 3, flown by the United States later, was the first U.S. two-person flight. Those are different milestones: one set a three-person crew record, the other marked the United States’ first flight with two astronauts.

The crew brought together a pilot, an engineer and a physician. Their flight demonstrated that a spacecraft could carry a larger crew than the single-cosmonaut missions that had preceded it.

Launch, flight and landing
- October 12, 1964: Voskhod 1 launched with Komarov, Feoktistov and Yegorov aboard.
- In orbit: The spacecraft completed 16 orbits around Earth.
- October 13, 1964: The crew landed safely after 24 hours and 17 minutes in space. NASA’s 1964 chronology records that the three cosmonauts were reported in good condition after landing (NASA’s 1964 chronology).
The duration—24 hours and 17 minutes—is the time the spacecraft was aloft, not the length of a single calendar day. Because the flight began on October 12 and ended on October 13, it spanned two dates on the calendar.
What the crew reportedly requested
NASA’s chronology preserves a contemporary Soviet news account that the crew requested another 24 hours in orbit. The same account says the chief designer stated the mission would remain within its planned program. This is a report recorded in NASA’s chronology, not an independently verified transcript or a confirmed direct quotation.
