The On Cloudmonster 3 is a daily road-running trainer with a high, rocker-shaped platform and a notably firm ride—not a plush, sink-in shoe. On positions it for runs from recovery to steady-state training. Whether that firmness feels controlled and protective or under-cushioned over longer efforts depends on the runner and the test: two independent reviews report meaningfully different experiences.
What the Cloudmonster 3 is designed to do
The standard Cloudmonster 3 is the everyday trainer in On’s three-model Cloudmonster 3 lineup. On describes its construction as dual-density Helion foam, triple-layer CloudTec cushioning, an enhanced rocker and a nylon-blend Speedboard. The stated goal is a forward-rolling ride for daily running, including recovery and steady-state sessions. These are the manufacturer’s design claims, not a guarantee that every runner will experience the same amount of energy return.

“Max cushioned” can suggest a soft, pillowy ride, but that is not how these reviews characterize the Cloudmonster 3. Firmness is the more consistent descriptor; what differs is how that firmness translates into cushioning and responsiveness over distance.

Runner’s World: controlled over longer runs
Cat Bowen’s Runner’s World review describes a firm but cushioned ride and reports that the shoe maintained its balance during her 9–16 mile runs. She writes, “The firmness keeps the ride controlled and responsive.” That is one reviewer’s account of her own running, not a result that establishes how all runners will respond. Bowen also praises the refined upper and lockdown, while identifying the heel collar as a possible drawback. Read Bowen’s review at Runner’s World.
RTINGS: firm, with limited rebound in testing
RTINGS also describes the ride as firm, but its testing found weak rebound and cushioning that bottoms out early. It praised impact absorption in its cushioning test while noting that the firm foam and collapsing CloudTec pods limit shock absorption and rebound. RTINGS also found good lateral stability. Those findings belong to its tested shoe and testing method; they should not be treated as a universal outcome. See RTINGS’ Cloudmonster 3 test.
Rank #2
- Control the pace
- Runs become play
- Runs become play
The practical takeaway is that this is a firm shoe, but the reviews do not establish a single verdict on its long-run protection or responsiveness. If possible, try it on a run of the length and pace you expect to use it for; a brief walk or short jog may not tell you whether its feel suits you over time.
Fit and upper: check toe-box height
On recommends a regular, true-to-size fit. Both reviews generally support true-to-size length, though Runner’s World notes that some testers found the toe box long. RTINGS describes the arch and forefoot width as accommodating but says the toe box has limited height. These observations point to a useful distinction: the shoe may have enough width and length for many feet yet still feel low over the toes.
Rank #3
- Control the pace
- Runs become play
- Complete your fit
When trying it on, check that your toes have enough vertical room as well as fore-aft space, and pay attention to the heel collar. Bowen praised the upper’s refinement and lockdown but flagged that collar as a possible drawback. Fit impressions are reviewer observations, not a guarantee for a particular foot shape.
Cloudmonster 3 specifications and measured differences
On’s published figures and RTINGS’ measurements are not interchangeable. On reports specifications for two stated sample sizes; RTINGS measured a men’s size 9 shoe and obtained different stack and drop figures. Shoe measurements can vary with size and method, so the values below should be read with their source and sample attached.
Rank #4
| Measure | On’s published specification (2026) | RTINGS measurement (tested men’s size 9) |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 295 g, men’s US 8.5; 240 g, women’s US 7 | 296.6 g |
| Heel stack | 35 mm | 40.1 mm |
| Forefoot/toe stack | 29 mm | 32.8 mm forefoot |
| Heel-to-toe drop | 6 mm | 7.3 mm measured |
On’s figures come from its February 26, 2026 collection announcement. RTINGS’ figures are its measurements of the tested men’s size 9 sample, not a replacement specification for every size.

The Cloudmonster 3 is the lineup’s daily trainer. The two Hyper models are separate shoes with different intended uses and prices listed by On in the U.S. announcement:
Best Value
- Control the pace
- Runs become play
- Complete your fit
| Model | On’s stated positioning | U.S. price listed by On |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudmonster 3 | Daily trainer | $190 |
| Cloudmonster 3 Hyper | Long-run trainer; uses Helion HF foam | $220 |
| LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper | Long and tempo runs | $330 |
These prices are the U.S. figures in On’s February 26, 2026 announcement, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability. The Hyper names refer to distinct models, not alternate versions of the standard shoe reviewed here. On’s lineup positioning can help narrow the choice by intended run type, but it does not establish that one model will feel better for a particular runner.
Who should consider the Cloudmonster 3?
- Consider it if: you want a daily road trainer with a pronounced rocker and a firm, structured feel, and you can verify that the toe-box height works for you.
- Be cautious if: you specifically want a soft, plush sensation, need substantial vertical toe room, or rely on a shoe feeling consistently protective late in long runs. The available reviews disagree on the last point.
- Try before committing to longer training: the different long-run reports make personal fit and feel particularly important; neither reviewer’s result predicts yours.
Verdict
The Cloudmonster 3 is best understood as a firm, rocker-driven daily trainer, not a soft max-cushion shoe. On’s design and intended-use claims are clear, but independent reports diverge on how well its cushioning and rebound hold up over longer runs. If the shoe’s firm feel suits you and its toe-box shape fits, it may work for everyday road training; runners seeking plushness or proven long-run protection should test it rather than infer either quality from the product label.
