To connect an omnichannel retail journey, make the information and actions customers rely on consistent as they move between online, mobile, stores, service, and fulfillment. Start by mapping where a journey breaks, then define the service promises you can meet, connect the product, price, customer, transaction, inventory, and order information behind those promises, and measure customer outcomes alongside the full cost of delivery.
What an omnichannel customer journey needs to connect
Omnichannel retail is more than selling through a website and stores at the same time. It is an operating model in which a customer can discover a product in one place, evaluate or buy it in another, receive it through a suitable fulfillment option, and get help or make a return without losing essential context.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
In practice, that means coordinating a set of connected records and processes:
- Product and price: Customers should encounter accurate, consistent product details, prices, and applicable promotions across the channels they use.
- Customer and transaction context: Where a customer has consented to relevant data use, staff and systems should be able to use appropriate preferences and interaction or purchase history to support the next step.
- Inventory and orders: Availability claims, order status, fulfillment choices, and exceptions need to reflect what the business can actually deliver.
- Service and returns: A customer should be able to get help with an order or product without being stranded at the boundary between the store, website, delivery operation, and service team.
A 2024 study of 516 retail buyers in Peru examined channel integration as several distinct dimensions. It found significant customer-experience effects associated with integration of pricing and product information, transaction information, and order fulfillment; promotion integration related to relational and sensory experience. These findings support treating the dimensions separately, not assuming one integration feature guarantees a better experience everywhere. Map the journey before choosing technology
Trace real customer tasks across the whole journey rather than beginning with a platform feature list. Include discovery, product evaluation, purchase, fulfillment, service, and returns. For each task, note the channel the customer starts in, the channel they may move to, and what information or action must carry forward.
| Journey stage | What the customer needs | Where to look for a break |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Find relevant products and understand what they are. | Product details, price, or promotions differ between the site, app, and store. |
| Evaluation | Confirm fit, availability, and the best way to buy. | Online stock does not reflect local availability, or store staff cannot see relevant product information. |
| Purchase | Complete a transaction through a convenient channel. | A promotion, cart, customer detail, or transaction context does not carry across a channel change. |
| Fulfillment | Know when and where an order will arrive or be ready. | The promised pickup or delivery option is not supported by current stock, capacity, or order status. |
| Service and returns | Resolve an issue or return without starting over. | Service staff cannot see the relevant order, transaction, or prior interaction. |
Use this map to identify repeated questions, inconsistent prices or stock, lost order visibility, and handoffs that force customers to repeat information. Rank the breaks by how many important journeys they affect and by the operational work required to fix them. A polished front end will not repair a fulfillment or data problem underneath it.
Define the service promise for the customers and occasions that matter
Decide which customer segments and purchase occasions the business is trying to serve, then make service levels explicit. A promise might specify which locations show local stock, what pickup readiness means, how delivery timing is communicated, or which orders can be returned in store.
Do not assume that one speed or service level is right for every location and order. McKinsey cautions that trying to serve everyone with a single supply-chain promise can raise costs without creating meaningful differentiation. It offers faster premium service in a city and more efficient standard delivery in rural areas as an illustrative contrast, not a universal rule. The useful principle is to align a promise with customer need and the operation’s ability to meet it. McKinsey, “Into the fast lane: How to master the omnichannel supply chain”.

Write each promise in operational terms: who qualifies, which products and locations are covered, what the customer will be told, what happens when the promise cannot be met, and which team owns the exception. That prevents a marketing message from promising a service that stores, inventory, or delivery operations cannot consistently provide.
Connect the information that makes the journey coherent
Set a clear source of truth, or an agreed synchronization process, for product details, prices and promotions, inventory, customer preferences where consented, transactions, orders, and service history. “Unified commerce” is commonly used for a centralized view of customers, transactions, orders, and inventory across channels; TCS presents that definition as part of its vendor positioning, not as a requirement to buy a particular platform. TCS OmniStore with RIS News, “Unified commerce: The key to orchestrating modern customer journeys”.
Prioritize the information that supports a defined customer promise. For example, a local-stock promise depends on accurate store inventory and a process for reserving or allocating the item. An order-status promise depends on reliable transaction and fulfillment events. A store-service workflow that uses purchase history depends on appropriate access controls and consented, useful customer data.

Connecting systems is not just a software installation. It can require end-to-end planning, information flow between systems, integration with legacy technology, revised operating processes, suitable logistics partners, and cross-functional performance management. Decide whether a more consolidated platform or a composable set of specialist systems better fits the organization’s needs; neither architecture is an automatic winner. Include implementation effort, data quality, flexibility, and the ability to manage exceptions in that decision.

Make inventory and fulfillment promises dependable
Customers can only act on stock information if it is timely and accurate. Showing an item as available when it has already sold, is damaged, or cannot be picked creates a broken promise. Establish how inventory updates, what counts as sellable stock, how reservations work, and what staff should do when counts disagree.
Possible options include showing local store stock on product pages, offering store pickup, and shipping an online order from a store. These are choices, not a checklist that every retailer must adopt. Evaluate them against local staffing, picking and packing capacity, delivery economics, stock allocation, and the customer’s expected timing. Cross-channel inventory pools and continuous planning can improve availability, but depend on suitable inventory levels, demand forecasts, lead-time assumptions, and order-allocation rules.
Think with Google’s report on the Omnichannel Index 2024 describes 368 retailers across six markets—Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark—and 70 customer-journey touchpoints. In reporting on that index in June 2024, it said 84% of surveyed omnichannel retailers let store assistants access stock data from other stores and online, while 20% offered ship-from-store. These findings describe that survey and geography, not all retailers. Think with Google, “What top retailers in Northern Europe can still teach us about omnichannel in 2024”.

Equip staff and personalize responsibly
Store employees can bridge online and in-person interactions when they have access to useful information and a practical way to act on it. Clienteling may help staff connect a customer’s current question to a relevant prior interaction, but it should use data with appropriate consent and only when it supports the customer’s task. Mobile point of sale can be one part of such a workflow; it is not proof that every retailer needs the same device or setup.

In the same June 2024 Google article, Ganni reported that clienteling represented 9% of its total store revenue in the six months after launching an “abandoned fitting room” initiative using mobile POS. This is one retailer’s reported case result, not a controlled estimate of what another retailer should expect. The article also reports that 4% of surveyed retailers used mobile POS; that figure belongs to the Omnichannel Index 2024 survey, not a general measure of current adoption.
Before expanding personalization, specify which data is relevant, what customers have agreed to, who can access it, and how it will change the service interaction. Give staff a workflow that makes the information actionable rather than adding another screen with no clear next step.

Evaluate the connected journey as a system. Pair experience measures with the operational work and cost required to deliver the service. Useful measures include:
- Journey completion and cross-channel conversion for the customer tasks the retailer has chosen to support.
- Accuracy of inventory shown to customers and the reliability of pickup or delivery promises.
- Order visibility, service resolution, and the handling of returns across channels.
- Customer-experience outcomes alongside picking, packing, processing, delivery, service, and return costs.
- Exception volume and the operational effort needed to resolve stock, order, or channel mismatches.
Deloitte’s 2025 Retail Industry Outlook reports that omnichannel shoppers spend 1.5 times more per month than single-channel shoppers in its cited comparison. This is an association, not proof that omnichannel caused the spending difference. Deloitte also notes that fulfillment work and third-party vendor fees can erode profitability, so higher spend alone is not enough to establish that a connected journey is economically successful. Deloitte Insights, “2025 Retail Industry Outlook”.

- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
Choose a baseline and compare the same customer tasks, channels, and costs over time. When a change improves conversion or availability, check whether it also changes fulfillment cost, returns, service workload, or margin. Do not treat a feature launch or a single retailer case as evidence that the full operating model is profitable.
Choose an implementation sequence that reduces journey breaks
- Map the journeys and identify failures. Document where product, transaction, order, service, or return context is lost, and select the customer tasks to improve first.
- Set a measurable service promise. Define covered customers, products, locations, timing, eligibility, and exception handling in terms operations can meet.
- Assign ownership for core data. Identify which systems and teams maintain product, price, inventory, customer, transaction, order, and service information, including update timing and access rules.
- Connect the process as well as the systems. Agree how inventory is reserved, how orders are allocated, how store and service teams see relevant status, and who handles exceptions.
- Launch against a bounded customer task. Start with a defined set of journeys, locations, or fulfillment promises so teams can see where information or operating capacity fails before broadening coverage.
- Review experience and unit economics together. Compare journey outcomes with fulfillment, service, return, and integration costs, then adjust the promise, process, or coverage based on what the operation can sustain.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
Published figures on omnichannel retail come from different study designs and populations, so they should not be combined as if they share a denominator. Think with Google’s June 2024 account reports that 70% of Gamma’s customers researched online before going to a store; that is Gamma’s first-party customer data, not a retail-wide estimate. TCS OmniStore with RIS News reports that 3% of surveyed retailers said they currently provide a “truly unified experience,” but the article does not show a publication date for that research summary and the finding is vendor-produced. Neither figure establishes a universal benchmark for a retailer’s own journey.
Likewise, Kasper Holst, co-founder of Impact Commerce, said in the Google article: “It’s about giving the customer what they want. We know that 20% of all retail is ‘I want it now’, so being able to show your stock — in real time — across all your platforms is essential.” That is Holst’s attributed statement, not the Omnichannel Index finding that 20% of surveyed retailers offered ship-from-store.

What does omnichannel retail mean?
It means coordinating customer experience and operating information across channels so product, transaction, order, fulfillment, service, and return context can carry through a customer’s journey.
What should a retailer connect first?
Start with the data and processes needed for the specific customer journey that is breaking. Common foundations are accurate product and price information, inventory, transaction and order status, and clear ownership for service or fulfillment exceptions.
Does omnichannel retail require one all-in-one platform?
No. A retailer can use a consolidated platform or integrate specialist systems. The choice depends on required journey coverage, legacy integration, data quality, flexibility, implementation effort, and how well the systems support the retailer’s operating processes.
Does omnichannel automatically increase sales or loyalty?
No universal causal guarantee is established. Deloitte’s 2025 outlook reports an association between omnichannel shoppers and higher monthly spend in its comparison, while also warning that fulfillment work and vendor fees can erode profitability.
