The OM System PEN is a compact, 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds camera aimed at everyday still photography and travel. It pairs a rangefinder-style body with in-body stabilization and phase-detection autofocus, but the appeal depends on the lens you put on it: a larger lens can blunt the compactness, and its less dependable video autofocus makes it a weaker fit for frequent video work. DPReview’s phrase “somewhat throwback, for better and worse” captures that mix of nostalgia and modern conveniences.
What kind of camera is the OM System PEN?
The PEN is a mirrorless camera built around a 20.4MP Four Thirds sensor. Its rangefinder-style design is compact, and its feature set includes an electronic viewfinder, in-body image stabilization (IBIS), and phase-detection autofocus (PDAF). DPReview positions it for travel and everyday use rather than treating its retro styling as evidence that it is a direct replacement for the 2016 PEN-F. DPReview’s review

That distinction matters: the PEN’s character is a small, stills-oriented camera with a familiar design language, not a promise of the same capabilities or role as an earlier model. The strongest case for it is carrying a relatively compact camera for general photography; the case weakens if your priorities are extensive video work, a very small kit with every lens, or demanding long-lens use.

How does it perform for still photography?
Stabilization for everyday shooting
DPReview lists IBIS rated to 5.5EV, a feature that can help reduce camera shake in still photographs. The rating is not a promise that every handheld exposure will be sharp: movement by the subject, lens choice, technique, and shooting conditions still matter. Treat the figure as a specification, not a substitute for choosing an appropriate shutter speed.

- Advanced Autofocus System: AI Human and Pet Detection AF helps you concentrate on the moment when photographing people and pets
Autofocus and burst shooting
The PEN combines phase-detection autofocus with recognition for people and dogs or cats, according to DPReview. OM System specifies on-chip all-cross-type phase-detection autofocus. The camera is therefore not simply relying on a basic contrast-detection system, but the supplied review evidence does not establish that it is an ideal choice for every fast-action or long-lens scenario.
DPReview lists burst shooting up to 30 frames per second with autofocus and exposure locked. Since focus and exposure are locked for that maximum-rate mode, do not interpret 30fps as a promise of continuous focus and exposure adjustment across a moving subject.

Is the PEN a good travel and everyday camera?
It can make sense if you want a compact body for general still photography and value having an electronic viewfinder, stabilization, and interchangeable lenses. DPReview specifically frames it for travel and everyday use. The practical question is whether the complete camera-and-lens combination stays small enough for how you plan to carry it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe body is compact; the kit depends on the lens
Micro Four Thirds compatibility gives you lens choices, but the body’s size does not determine the size of the complete kit. The cited 14–42mm f/3.5–5.6 III kit lens is one compact-minded option; an Olympus 45mm f/1.8 is another example from the sources. Each changes what the camera is suited to and how much space it takes up. Confirm that a listing includes the lens you want: body-only and kit configurations are not interchangeable offers. - The compact 393g body is easy to carry for travel, everyday life and spontaneous photography.
- A viewfinder, shutter button, dial-based operation and interchangeable lenses give you a dedicated and intuitive camera shooting experience.

- Image stabilisation supports steadier handheld shooting while keeping the kit compact.
- AI Human and Pet Detection AF helps you concentrate on the moment when photographing people and pets.
Where the small-camera advantage can fade
If you select larger lenses for a particular reach or shooting style, the overall kit can become less pocketable and less convenient than the body alone suggests. The sources support travel and everyday positioning, but do not establish the PEN as a universal choice for demanding action or long-lens photography. Decide based on the lens you will actually use, not just the camera’s silhouette.
Is it suitable for video?
The listed formats are 4K up to 30fps, C4K at 24fps, and 8-bit video, as reported by TechRadar. Those specifications provide recording options, but DPReview’s practical assessment is more important if you plan to shoot often: it describes the video autofocus as less dependable and says the camera would not suit someone planning to shoot a lot of video. Rank #4
- Compact and Lightweight Design: The compact 393g body is easy to carry for travel, everyday life and spontaneous photography
- Intuitive Camera Controls: A viewfinder, shutter button, dial-based operation and interchangeable lenses give you a dedicated and intuitive camera shooting experience
- Creative In-Camera Customization: Color, monochrome and CP-button controls make it easier to create distinctive looks in-camera
- Built-In Image Stabilization: Image stabilisation supports steadier handheld shooting while keeping the kit compact
- Advanced Autofocus Technology: AI Human and Pet Detection Autofocus helps you concentrate on the moment when photographing people and pets
For occasional clips alongside stills, the reported formats may be sufficient depending on your needs. If reliable focus transitions or a video-first feature set are central to your work, the review’s autofocus caveat is a meaningful reason to consider a different camera category.
What did it cost at launch, and what should buyers verify?
TechRadar reported launch pricing in 2026 of $1,000, £850, and AU$1,800 for the camera, with the 14–42mm f/3.5–5.6 III kit option listed at an additional $100, £100, and AU$300.
