OLED and LCD panels both need a display-driver IC (DDI), but the chips are designed for fundamentally different electrical loads. An LCD DDI controls voltage-driven liquid-crystal cells and normally works with a separate backlight circuit. An OLED or AMOLED DDI controls self-emissive pixels whose brightness depends on accurately regulated current, transistor behavior and panel-specific compensation. Their interfaces, timing, bias rails, command sets and bonding must match the exact panel, so an LCD driver is not a drop-in replacement for an OLED driver—and an AMOLED power-supply IC is not itself a complete DDI.
What a display-driver IC does
A DDI sits between the device’s image-processing electronics and the display panel. Samsung Display describes it as an “indispensable semiconductor chip” that accepts image signals from the CPU, generates and controls output signals, and operates each subpixel through gate and source functions. In a typical system, a timing controller (TCON) schedules rows and columns, while the DDI converts digital image data into the precise analog voltages or currents that the panel’s transistors and pixels require.

Himax’s 2024 Annual Report similarly says a display driver receives image data from the timing controller and delivers precise analog voltages or currents to create an image. The wording matters: LCD and OLED drivers may both be called source and gate drivers, but the required output type, calibration and protection are different because the panel physics are different.

| Design axis | LCD driver IC | OLED/AMOLED driver IC |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel mechanism | Controls liquid-crystal transmission through TFT-addressed pixels; a separate light source illuminates the panel. | Drives self-emissive OLED pixels; a pixel can produce black by stopping emission, without a backlight. |
| Primary analog output | Source drivers apply accurately selected column voltages; gamma and VCOM behavior shape grayscale and common-electrode operation. | Source output and compensation are panel-specific; controlled current and transistor operating points are central to brightness and uniformity. |
| Typical support power | LCD bias rails such as AVDD, ±AVDD, VGH and VGL, plus level shifters, gamma/VCOM buffers and a separate LED-backlight driver. | AMOLED bias supplies commonly provide positive and negative rails, with regulation and sequencing matched to the OLED stack and driver. |
| Touch integration | Touch and display can be combined in TDDI for many small and medium TFT-LCD products. | Touch control is typically a discrete controller, according to Himax’s product description. |
| Common bonding choices | COG or COF, depending on panel size and construction. | COF or COP is common when thin, flexible or foldable construction is required; the exact choice is panel-specific. |

How an LCD driver works
Row and column addressing
An active-matrix LCD contains a thin-film transistor (TFT) at each subpixel. Gate-driver outputs select one row at a time. When a row is selected, the source driver places a voltage on each column. The TFT stores that voltage on the pixel capacitor, changing the liquid crystal’s optical transmission until the row is refreshed.

The source output is therefore a voltage chosen from a calibrated grayscale range, not a direct LED current command. Positive and negative polarity are alternated in the panel to limit liquid-crystal stress and image sticking. The DDI’s timing, source-voltage accuracy and polarity control must agree with the panel’s row count, column count and inversion scheme.
Gamma and VCOM functions
LCD grayscale is not linear with voltage. Gamma reference voltages and buffer stages establish the intermediate levels that the source driver uses for the desired luminance curve. VCOM, the common-electrode reference, must also be held at the level and waveform specified by the panel maker; errors can produce flicker, line artifacts or poor viewing-angle behavior. Texas Instruments lists LCD gamma/VCOM buffers as a distinct support category rather than assuming those functions are interchangeable with an OLED supply.
The backlight is a separate path
Liquid crystals modulate light; they do not create it. An LCD assembly therefore includes an LED backlight and a backlight driver that regulates LED current, dimming and protection. TI identifies backlight LED drivers separately from LCD bias supplies. A DDI can control image data perfectly while the panel remains dark if the backlight circuit is unpowered or its enable and fault requirements are not met.
How an OLED or AMOLED driver works
Emissive pixels and current control
In an OLED panel, each red, green and blue subpixel emits light when current flows through its organic diode. The pixel transistor circuit controls that current, so source-driver accuracy, gate timing and supply stability directly affect brightness and uniformity. There is no optical shutter and no backlight to hide errors; the DDI must work with the pixel circuit’s programmed-current range and refresh behavior.

Compensation is panel-specific
OLED electrical characteristics vary with transistor threshold, temperature, aging and the particular organic materials used. AMOLED panels therefore use panel-specific compensation data and driving sequences to keep neighboring pixels uniform and to compensate for transistor or emitter variation. A candidate DDI must support the panel’s compensation method, memory or calibration protocol, refresh modes and command set. Matching only the connector or nominal resolution is not sufficient.
Black level and optical consequences
Because an OLED pixel can be turned off, it can produce black without an external light source. TI’s 2018 automotive-display paper contrasts this with LCD’s need for a backlight and describes AMOLED panels as lighter and sharper with a “perfect hue of black.” In an LCD, the backlight remains on and the liquid crystal blocks most of its light; leakage and the optical stack determine how dark black appears.
Power rails: why the supplies differ
LCD bias requirements
TI identifies AVDD and ±AVDD analog rails, high gate-on voltage (VGH), gate-off voltage (VGL), level shifters, gamma/VCOM buffers and backlight drivers as separate LCD support functions. The panel datasheet defines the permitted voltage ranges, ramp order, ripple and current. VGH and VGL operate the TFT gates, while AVDD-type rails power source-driver analog circuitry and reference networks.

AMOLED positive and negative rails
AMOLED panels commonly need a positive pixel supply and a negative supply for the driver or pixel circuit. The voltages and sequence are not universal: one panel may require a different negative value, ramp timing or discharge behavior than another. The DDI and its support regulator must meet those limits during startup, active refresh, low-power mode and shutdown.

Example: TI TPS65137AS support IC
Texas Instruments lists the TPS65137AS as an active 250 mA dual-output AMOLED display power-supply IC. Its specified input range is 2.5–4.8 V; the positive VPOS output is fixed at 4.6 V, and the negative VNEG output is digitally programmable from −2.2 to −5.2 V. The device combines a boost converter, an LDO post-regulator and an inverting buck-boost converter in a 3 mm × 3 mm, 10-pin QFN package. Those figures come from the TI datasheet entry dated September 5, 2013.
This part is a bias/power-support IC, not a universal OLED DDI. It does not replace the panel’s timing, source, gate, command, compensation and image-data functions. Use it only when its rails, current, sequencing and control interface match the specific AMOLED panel and the separate DDI used in that design.
Can an LCD driver be used on an OLED panel?
In a normal design, no. The two devices may share a high-level link such as MIPI Display Serial Interface (DSI), but protocol similarity does not make the electrical outputs compatible. Before considering a substitution, all of these items must match:

Integration: TCON, touch and driver functions
Separate and integrated blocks
Himax reports that gate and source drivers are often separate, although they may be integrated for small and medium applications. Timing controllers are usually discrete but can also be integrated. Product architecture therefore varies: one panel may expose a separate TCON and source/gate chips, while another places more timing and driving logic in a single package.
TDDI in LCD products
Touch-and-display driver integration (TDDI) combines display driving with in-cell touch sensing. Himax identifies TDDI as common in many TFT-LCD products. The combined chip must schedule touch measurements between display scans and manage the interference between high-voltage display transitions and low-level touch signals.
Why OLED touch is often separate
Himax states that OLED panels typically use a discrete touch controller. The touch sensor may be on-cell or integrated into a flexible stack, but its controller remains a separate device in many implementations. Do not assume an OLED DDI includes touch simply because a comparable LCD module uses TDDI.
Bonding and package choices
Samsung’s DDI packaging explanation identifies chip-on-glass (COG), chip-on-film (COF) and chip-on-plastic (COP). COG mounts the IC directly on the glass substrate. COF attaches it to a flexible film, allowing the film to fold behind the panel. COP mounts the chip on a plastic substrate and is used when very thin or foldable construction is required.

Packaging is part of electrical compatibility. The same logical DSI data format can be routed to chips with different bump maps, bond pitches, flex tails and thermal limits. A replacement must match the panel’s physical attachment and pin assignment, not merely its advertised display size.
Color depth and source-driver precision
Source-driver resolution sets how many code levels each color channel can represent. Himax’s 2024 Annual Report gives these examples:
| Source-driver resolution | Approximate colors |
|---|---|
| 6-bit per channel | 262,000 colors |
| 8-bit per channel | About 16 million colors |
| 10-bit per channel | About 1 billion colors |
These figures describe code depth, not guaranteed panel quality. Optical calibration, dithering, gamma accuracy, emitter or backlight uniformity and the display engine’s output format also determine what a viewer sees. A higher-bit DDI cannot create detail absent from the source image or compensate for a panel that was not designed for that mode.
Choosing a DDI or diagnosing a replacement
- Identify the exact panel. Record the manufacturer part number, revision, active resolution, refresh-rate range and panel technology. “AMOLED” or “IPS LCD” alone is not enough.
- Obtain the panel electrical specification. Verify interface type, lane count, pixel format, initialization commands, reset behavior and required rails. Module-board markings can differ from the bare-panel number.
- Map every supply. List analog, digital, gate, source, backlight or OLED positive/negative rails, along with startup order, tolerances, maximum current and discharge timing.
- Confirm the driver role. Determine whether the candidate is a complete DDI, a source/gate driver, a TCON, a TDDI or only a bias-supply IC such as the TPS65137AS.
- Check compensation and calibration support. For OLED, verify current programming, mura or aging compensation and temperature behavior. For LCD, verify gamma, VCOM and inversion requirements.
- Verify package and bonding. Match COG, COF or COP construction, bump map, flex connector, pin pitch and thermal path.
- Bring up power before data. Measure each rail during ramp and shutdown, then check reset and enable levels. Do not attach a valuable panel while a rail is overshooting or reversed.
- Use the panel’s initialization sequence. Send the exact vendor command table, delays and sleep-out procedure. A generic DSI initialization script can leave a panel blank or in an unsafe mode.
- Validate the image path. Confirm test patterns, color order, frame rate, brightness commands and low-power transitions before integrating touch or backlight control.
Automotive and other demanding applications
TI’s 2018 automotive-display paper identifies at least 300 pixels per inch as a density needed for occupants to see a quality automotive image. It also describes vehicle temperature conditions from −40 °C to above 105 °C and notes that design and production support may need to continue for at least five years and potentially up to 10 years because of warranty obligations.
Those figures are automotive design targets, not universal OLED or LCD limits. TI identifies OLED high-temperature reliability, lifetime and cost as adoption constraints in automotive use. An automotive DDI therefore needs documented temperature ratings, long-term availability, fault handling and validated compensation. A phone-panel driver selected for a laboratory prototype is not automatically suitable for a vehicle program.
Common failure symptoms and likely causes
- No image, rails present: wrong panel initialization, reset polarity, DSI lane configuration, pixel format or an incompatible DDI.
- Image is extremely dim on LCD: backlight-enable, LED-driver current or backlight power is missing; the LCD DDI alone cannot illuminate the panel.
- OLED image appears but has uneven brightness: incorrect compensation data, current programming, negative rail, temperature handling or panel calibration.
- Flicker or horizontal artifacts on LCD: VCOM, gamma references, inversion timing or source-voltage levels do not match the panel.
- Colors are swapped or tinted: RGB/BGR order, bit depth, dithering mode or initialization registers are wrong.
- Panel resets during refresh: rail droop, insufficient regulator current, poor sequencing, excessive ripple or thermal protection.
- Touch works intermittently: touch-controller firmware, TDDI scheduling or electrical noise from display transitions is mismatched.
Bottom line for a design decision
Choose the DDI as part of a panel-specific electrical system, not as a generic “OLED” or “LCD” accessory. LCD drivers are built around voltage-driven liquid-crystal cells, gamma/VCOM references, gate-bias rails and a separate backlight. OLED/AMOLED drivers are built around emissive-pixel current control, compensation and tightly managed positive and negative supplies. A support regulator can provide the rails, but only a compatible DDI can perform the panel’s image timing, source/gate driving and command handling.
