Reports instead point to an initial high-end OLED generation using the current M5 Pro and M5 Max, with M7 Pro and M7 Max arriving in a later OLED refresh around late 2027 to early 2028. Apple has announced none of these products, so the schedule and specifications can still change.
What the latest reports say
MacRumors reported on October 15, 2026, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that Apple is “pretty much done” with its M6 chip lineup. The reported M6 plans include a Mac mini, an M6 iMac and an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, but no M6 Pro, M6 Max or M6 Ultra.

That reported gap matters because the first high-end MacBook Pro redesign with an OLED display is expected to arrive before Apple’s next high-end chip generation is ready. Gurman’s report says the initial touchscreen models will reuse M5 Pro and M5 Max, while M7 Pro and M7 Max are planned for “the end of next year”—meaning late 2027, based on the October 2026 report.

OLED MacBook Pro and the base M7 MacBook Pro are different products
A July 2026 roadmap separates two machines that are easy to confuse:
#1 Best Overall
- FAST RUNS IN THE FAMILY — The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip brings next-generation speed and powerful on-device AI to personal, professional, and creative tasks. With all-day battery life, double the starting storage,* and a breathtaking Liquid Retina XDR display, it’s pro in every way.*
- BUCKLE UP — Along with a next-generation CPU, faster unified memory, and up to 2x faster SSD storage,* M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a more powerful GPU with a Neural Accelerator built into each core, delivering faster AI performance and on-device training capabilities. So you can blaze through demanding workloads at mind-bending speeds.
- BUILT FOR AI — Apple silicon, and every major component that powers it, is designed to run demanding on-device AI workloads like LLM inference and training. And Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly with groundbreaking privacy protections at every step.*
- ALL-DAY BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Pro delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in.*
- MACOS RUNS APPS FAST — All your go-to apps run lightning fast in macOS, including built-in apps like FaceTime and Messages. Plus, built-in virus protection and free software updates help keep your Mac running smoothly and securely.
| Reported model | Expected timing | Chip | Display |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro | Potentially early 2027 | Standard M7 | Not OLED in the reported roadmap |
| First high-end OLED MacBook Pro | Late 2026 to early 2027 | M5 Pro and M5 Max | OLED touchscreen, according to reports |
| Later OLED MacBook Pro generation | Late 2027 to early 2028 | M7 Pro and M7 Max | Reportedly adds LTPO technology |
The standard M7 14-inch model should therefore not be treated as the OLED MacBook Pro. It is reported as a lower-tier product without OLED, while the OLED redesign is a separate high-end generation.
When could the OLED MacBook Pro launch?
Current reporting gives two overlapping windows. A July 1 report placed the redesign at the end of 2026 or early 2027, while the October 2026 chip report associates M7 Pro and M7 Max with a later generation at the end of 2027. In practical terms, that suggests:
Rank #2
- SUPERCHARGED BY M5 — The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 brings next-generation speed and powerful on-device AI to personal, professional, and creative tasks. Featuring all-day battery life and a breathtaking Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1600 nits peak brightness, it’s pro in every way.*
- HAPPILY EVER FASTER — Along with its faster CPU and unified memory, M5 features a more powerful GPU with a Neural Accelerator built into each core, delivering faster AI performance. So you can blaze through demanding workloads at mind-bending speeds.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- ALL-DAY BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Pro delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in.
- APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*
- The first OLED MacBook Pro could appear from late 2026 through early 2027.
- Its reported processors are M5 Pro and M5 Max, not M6 Pro, M6 Max or M7 Pro.
- A subsequent OLED refresh with M7 Pro and M7 Max is expected around late 2027 to early 2028.
These dates come from supply-chain and journalist reporting rather than an Apple announcement. The July report also warned that memory shortages and higher component costs could move the launch schedule.

An Omdia roadmap summarized by 9to5Mac lists 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch OLED MacBook Pro or MacBook Pro Ultra displays in late 2026. The roadmap then shows another 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch generation in late 2027 that adds LTPO technology.

- FAST RUNS IN THE FAMILY — The 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip brings next-generation speed and powerful on-device AI to personal, professional, and creative tasks. With all-day battery life, double the starting storage,* and a breathtaking Liquid Retina XDR display, it’s pro in every way.*

What LTPO could mean
LTPO is a display backplane technology that can vary refresh rates more efficiently than a fixed-rate design. If the roadmap is accurate, the later generation could improve power management or enable more flexible refresh behavior, but Apple has not confirmed the implementation, refresh rates or battery impact.
Mini-LED models may remain available
The same Omdia roadmap expects mini-LED MacBook Pro models to remain in Apple’s lineup until at least 2028. That would create an overlap in which buyers could choose between established mini-LED hardware and newer OLED models rather than seeing an immediate, complete replacement.
Rank #4
- SUPERCHARGED BY M5 — The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 brings next-generation speed and powerful on-device AI to personal, professional, and creative tasks. Featuring all-day battery life and a breathtaking Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1600 nits peak brightness, it’s pro in every way.*

Should you buy an M5 MacBook Pro or wait?
| Your priority | More sensible path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need a professional laptop now | Buy a current MacBook Pro with M5-series hardware | The OLED launch, final specifications and pricing are unconfirmed, while current models are available. |
| You specifically want OLED or a touchscreen | Wait for the reported redesign | The first OLED models are the products expected to introduce those changes. |
| You want M7 Pro or M7 Max | Expect a longer wait, potentially until late 2027 or early 2028 | Reports associate those chips with a later OLED generation, not the first one. |
| You are considering an entry-level 14-inch model | Watch the early-2027 M7 model separately | It is reported to use a standard M7 chip without OLED. |
There is no confirmed price for either OLED generation. Higher display and component costs are possible, but any specific price claim would go beyond the available reporting.

- Apple has not announced an OLED MacBook Pro, an M7 chip or a launch date.
- The reported 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch sizes are roadmap figures, not confirmed retail specifications.
- The touchscreen design, LTPO feature, processor configurations and memory options remain unverified.
- No independent performance benchmarks for M5 Pro, M5 Max, M7 Pro or M7 Max in these rumored machines have been published in the supplied reports.
- Supply constraints, including reported memory shortages, could delay or change the lineup.
Bottom line for potential buyers
The headline distinction is chip timing: the first OLED MacBook Pro is expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max, while M7 Pro and M7 Max are tied to a later OLED refresh around late 2027. A standard-M7 14-inch MacBook Pro may arrive earlier, but it is reported without OLED. Buy current hardware if you need a dependable MacBook Pro now; wait only if the OLED design or the later M7 Pro/M7 Max generation is worth accepting an unconfirmed schedule.
