A faint ghost that disappears after a short time is usually temporary image retention. A mark that remains while unrelated video is playing, especially after the same logo, caption, game interface, or computer desktop has been shown for long periods, is more consistent with persistent wear commonly called OLED burn-in. That distinction is useful, but no photograph, color pattern, or single refresh cycle can conclusively diagnose a panel.
Start by changing to varied content and watching the mark. If it fades within a moment or two, follow the display maker’s normal panel-care guidance and avoid repeating the static exposure. If it remains across different scenes and colors after the exact model’s cleaning or refresh procedure, document the symptom and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

What image retention and burn-in mean
Image retention is the visible effect: a faint outline or ghost of earlier content remains after the picture changes. LG’s US television support guidance says this usually fades after a moment or two. It can occur after a paused screen, a bright logo, a game interface, or another high-contrast element has been displayed for a while.

LG describes it as lasting much longer and usually remaining visible even when other content is playing. RTINGS distinguishes this lasting wear from temporary retention and explains that uneven OLED pixel wear can create a permanent nonuniformity.

Consumer terminology is not perfectly consistent. LG’s television page calls image retention something commonly referred to as burn-in, then separates short-lived retention from longer-lasting burn-in. Define the symptom by its behavior rather than by the label used on a support page or in a forum post.
Why OLED panels can show a fixed mark
OLED pixels emit their own light. When parts of a panel repeatedly display bright, unchanging elements, those pixels can age differently from pixels used for changing imagery. Over extended exposure, that uneven wear can produce a nonuniform area that remains visible over other pictures. A temporary afterimage does not necessarily mean that permanent wear has occurred, and a persistent mark is not proven by one test image alone.
Static content that increases the risk
- Channel logos and persistent news captions.
- Game health bars, scoreboards, crosshairs, maps, and other heads-up-display elements.
- Computer taskbars, desktop icons, window borders, and application toolbars.
- A paused game, menu, streaming interface, or sign-in screen left on for a long period.
- Repeated use at very high brightness or in a vivid picture mode, which LG identifies as a possible contributor.
These examples describe risk from prolonged or repeated exposure, not a reason to fear ordinary viewing with varied content.
Quick comparison: temporary retention or persistent burn-in?
| Clue | More consistent with temporary image retention | More concerning for persistent wear |
|---|---|---|
| How long it lasts | The ghost fades after a moment or two once the picture changes. | The mark remains for a long period and does not materially fade during normal viewing. |
| Where it appears | Most noticeable on a particular flat color or low-detail scene. | Visible over unrelated programs, games, menus, and solid colors. |
| Exposure history | A brief pause or short display of a fixed element. | Repeated or extended display of the same logo, caption, HUD, taskbar, or icon. |
| Effect of changing content | Varied moving images gradually make it disappear. | Changing content does not remove it, although visibility can vary with brightness and color. |
| What the observation proves | It suggests a temporary afterimage, but it is not a panel diagnosis. | It justifies model-specific care steps and possible service; it still does not prove the cause by itself. |
Color, brightness, viewing angle, and the design of the displayed picture can make a mark easier or harder to see. Treat the table as a decision aid, not a replacement for manufacturer diagnosis.
How to check a visible mark safely
- Record what was on screen. Note whether the mark resembles a logo, subtitle line, game element, taskbar, or another fixed shape. Write down how long that element was displayed and whether the panel was running at unusually high brightness.
- Switch to unrelated moving content. Use several different scenes rather than one clip. Watch for a moment or two, then continue with normal varied viewing. A ghost that steadily fades is more compatible with temporary retention.
- Check more than one type of picture. Compare a normal program, a game or film with different colors, and a low-detail scene. A shape visible only against one flat tone may reflect ordinary uniformity variation rather than a fixed image.
- Let the display cool and rest normally. Stop the static source, use the maker’s normal standby or shutdown behavior, and avoid immediately repeating the same paused screen. Do not unplug a panel while a documented cleaning cycle is running.
- Use the exact model’s panel-care control. Look in the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page for the feature name used by that model, such as Pixel Refresher, Pixel Refresh, Image Cleaning, or a similar term. Menu labels, availability, and cycle behavior differ by model and region.
- Recheck with varied content. After the documented procedure has completed, view several unrelated images. If the mark remains consistently visible, save photographs taken under different content conditions and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Do not diagnose a panel from a single photograph. Camera exposure, shutter speed, screen reflections, and the viewing angle can exaggerate or hide faint uniformity differences.
Using solid-color and gray test images
Full-field white, gray, red, green, blue, and other uniform images can reveal unevenness that busy video masks. Tom’s Guide describes this kind of pattern as a way to inspect a television in a lab. It is an observation aid: a band, patch, or outline on a pattern does not by itself establish burn-in.
Straight bands can arise from other panel-uniformity conditions. Tom’s Guide cautions that some patterns may or may not be resolved by a refresh cycle. If you use a pattern, view several colors at a normal distance and compare the result with ordinary content. Do not keep cycling patterns or repeatedly running a long refresh in an attempt to force a diagnosis.

RTINGS has explained temporary image retention separately from lasting wear, but its earlier temporary-retention test entry was removed from later test-bench versions. That means there is no current, universal industry test that a household can use as a definitive burn-in verdict.
Pixel refresh and image cleaning: what the major guidance says
Refresh features are maintenance and compensation routines, not guaranteed repairs. A long cycle can temporarily turn off the display, and interrupting it can cause problems. Follow the instructions for the exact model and region.
LG televisions
LG’s US television support guidance dated June 26, 2026 describes automatic Pixel Refresher behavior and provides a manual start option on covered models. It says the longer calibration can take more than an hour. The television may be unavailable while the routine runs, so start it only when you will not need the display and do not interrupt it unless the model’s instructions specifically tell you to do so.
LG’s menu names and the conditions that trigger an automatic routine are model-dependent. Use the owner’s manual for the precise path and confirmation message rather than copying a menu sequence from a different television generation. If a mark continues across varied content after the documented routine, the same support guidance directs you toward further troubleshooting or service.
LG OLED monitors
LG’s US monitor guide dated August 13, 2026 calls the relevant control Image Cleaning. It explains that static elements such as the Windows taskbar, icons, or game menus can cause temporary image retention when left on screen for an extended period.
The guide says automatic cleaning occurs during power-saving or shutdown after more than four hours have passed since the previous cleaning. That timing describes the covered LG monitor guidance, not every OLED monitor. Menus and standard-model behavior can vary, so select the documented Image Cleaning option for your model and allow it to finish.
Samsung televisions in Hong Kong
Samsung’s Hong Kong OLED television support page, updated October 2, 2026, lists Pixel Shift, Auto Logo Brightness, and Pixel Refresh as model-dependent protections. It recommends Pixel Shift when static content is displayed and explains that the higher logo-brightness reduction setting dims logos further.

The same page says the Screen Saver activates automatically when the OLED television displays the same still image for two minutes. It also says Pixel Refresh can be started immediately or scheduled after the television is turned off, may take more than an hour, and is unsupported on some models. Samsung warns not to turn the television on during the process because doing so cancels it.

Those instructions explicitly apply to Hong Kong products. A television sold in another country may use different labels, timing, or available controls.
Samsung Caribbean guidance
Samsung’s Caribbean support instructions advise running Pixel Refresh when image retention appears and contacting Samsung if the symptom persists. Because this is regional guidance, confirm the model number and local support instructions before starting a cycle.
Why there is no universal refresh recipe
- Different panels and firmware versions expose different controls.
- Some routines are automatic; others require a manual command.
- A cycle may last more than an hour and can disable the screen temporarily.
- Some models do not support a particular feature.
- A routine may reduce temporary retention or compensate for certain uniformity conditions without reversing permanent pixel wear.
Never assume that a control called Pixel Refresh on one brand or region has the same duration or purpose on another display.
Prevention without changing how you watch
OLED displays are designed for mixed content. The practical goal is to reduce long, repeated exposure to the same bright shapes, not to avoid television, games, or computer use.

- Pause safely. When stepping away from a game or video, use the display’s screen saver, a moving idle screen, or the panel’s standby behavior instead of leaving a paused frame visible.
- Use built-in protection. Enable screen saver, pixel-shift, logo-brightness, and automatic panel-care features when your model provides them.
- Choose a comfortable brightness. RTINGS suggests lowering contrast or brightness to a comfortable level. LG also identifies extended high brightness or vivid settings as possible contributors.
- Turn the display off during long breaks. A normal shutdown or standby lets automatic care routines run when the manufacturer designed them to do so.
- Keep computer interfaces moving or hidden. Auto-hide a taskbar, use a screen saver, and avoid leaving a desktop or application toolbar fixed for an entire workday.
These steps lower exposure to static elements; they cannot guarantee that a panel will never develop a uniformity issue.

Ask the provider to evaluate the panel rather than assuming that a replacement, warranty outcome, or repair is guaranteed. Coverage and eligibility depend on the product, country, usage history, and manufacturer policy; no universal warranty result follows from the appearance of an afterimage.
Seek help sooner if the display develops multiple expanding areas, sudden lines, flicker, overheating, a burning smell, or power problems. Those symptoms are not a normal reason to keep running refresh cycles.

Common mistakes that can make the situation worse
Running a long refresh repeatedly
A long routine is not a safe diagnostic experiment. Samsung warns that its Pixel Refresh may take more than an hour and should not be interrupted. Repeated cycles add operating time without proving whether a mark is permanent. Run the documented routine once as directed, then reassess.
Leaving the same test screen on for hours
A solid-color pattern makes a mark easier to see, but keeping a static pattern displayed for an extended period adds exactly the kind of fixed exposure you are trying to avoid. Load the pattern briefly, inspect several colors, and return to varied content.
Assuming every line is burn-in
Panel uniformity can include bands, tinting, or other patterns that are unrelated to a retained logo or interface. A pattern that appears only under one test condition is not proof of permanent wear.
Interrupting automatic care
Turning on the television during a documented refresh can cancel it; Samsung’s Hong Kong instructions state this explicitly. LG’s guidance likewise describes automatic and manual routines that should be allowed to complete according to the model manual.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using an unverified cleaner or accessory
No cited manufacturer guidance establishes that a special cleaner, filter, or accessory repairs OLED burn-in. Physical screen cleaning cannot restore unevenly aged pixels, and pressing or rubbing the panel can create new damage.
A practical decision checklist
- Did the mark fade after changing to varied content for a short period?
- Is it visible across unrelated programs and colors, or only on one flat test image?
- Was a fixed logo, caption, game HUD, taskbar, or icon displayed repeatedly or for a long time?
- Have you checked the exact owner’s manual for the model’s screen saver and panel-care controls?
- Did you allow one documented cleaning or refresh routine to finish without interruption?
- If the mark persists, have you recorded the model, region, timing, content history, and photos for service?
A “yes” to persistence across varied content and to prolonged static exposure makes service the sensible next step. A “no” to those points, combined with rapid fading, is more consistent with temporary retention.
Bottom line
Image retention describes what you can see; burn-in describes a persistent form associated with longer-term uneven OLED wear. Watch how the mark behaves after the content changes, use test patterns only as brief observation aids, and run only the refresh or cleaning routine documented for your exact model and region. If the mark survives varied content and the manufacturer’s care procedure, stop experimenting and ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider to evaluate the panel.
