Forever returns WoW to its 2004 starting point, then builds new content on that foundation. OSRS established that an old MMO version can remain recognizable while evolving for years. The overlap is therefore about design values and player attention—not verified player migration or a measured market-share battle.
What WoW: Forever actually is
According to reporting published September 12, 2026, WoW: Forever resets the game to the 2004 launch-era framework while adding original content instead of simply replaying vanilla progression. Its announced package includes a level cap of 60 for the foreseeable future, three new zones, several overhauled zones, nine new dungeons, two new raids, the Skyborne Elves race and new race-and-class combinations. The reported launch date is November 4, 2026.

Access is reported to be included with an existing World of Warcraft subscription. Optional Battle.net upgrade packs are reported to start at $30. Those are the only commercial figures established for this comparison, and the $30 amount is a starting price reported on September 12 rather than a universal price for every edition or region.
Is WoW: Forever the OSRS of World of Warcraft?
That is the most useful shorthand, provided it is treated as a design analogy rather than a claim that the two games are identical. OSRS takes an older RuneScape build as a living foundation. It preserves a recognizable classic identity while adding skills, areas, activities and other updates over time. Forever is attempting a similar balance inside the 2004 WoW frame.

- Great product!
WoW world builder Matthew Armstrong described Forever as “an Old School RuneScape-style upgrade to the original World of Warcraft MMO many folks know inside out and love.” The comparison is consequently intentional at the level of direction: keep the old game’s character, but do not freeze it as a museum piece.
Where the two games overlap—and where they do not
| Design question | Old School RuneScape | WoW: Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | An older RuneScape build maintained as a continuing game | World of Warcraft’s 2004 launch-era foundation |
| Change policy | Ongoing additions that preserve the classic identity | New zones, overhauled zones, dungeons, raids, a race and race/class combinations |
| Level ceiling | Not stated in the cited material | 60 for the foreseeable future, according to September 2026 reporting |
| Progression model | Community analysis describes 24 largely separate skill systems | Traditional WoW progression emphasizes gear, consumables, buffs, dungeons and raids; the final Forever model is not fully specified |
| Player governance | Polling is a prominent part of OSRS’s public decision-making identity | A player proposal suggested an OSRS-style poll with a 70% threshold; Blizzard has not been shown to have adopted it |
The progression comparison needs caution. The description of 24 largely isolated OSRS skills comes from a WoW: Forever forum analysis, not an official Blizzard specification. Likewise, saying Forever has “horizontal progression” would go beyond the established evidence. Its fixed level cap may create room for horizontal additions, but the announced raids, dungeons and other systems do not by themselves prove a particular progression philosophy.
Why Blizzard is aiming at this audience
Armstrong said Forever is being made for Classic players and for “the millions of people who have had their accounts lapse over the years because they were not satisfied with changes that were made to the game.” He also said he wanted an authentic vanilla experience and described Forever as “wildly different” from retail WoW.
Those comments place Forever in the same consideration set as OSRS for players who want slower, recognizable and long-lived MMO worlds. They do not establish that OSRS players are leaving for Forever. No cited source provides independently verified concurrency, retention, migration or market-share data for OSRS in relation to the new WoW branch.

The four issues that will decide whether the comparison holds
1. Starting point versus change policy
Both games treat an old version as a platform rather than an endpoint. The difficult part is deciding which additions feel like a natural extension and which ones make the original identity harder to recognize.
2. Progression shape
OSRS’s skills can advance independently, allowing players to pursue different goals without every activity feeding one gear ladder. Classic WoW traditionally concentrates power in equipment, consumables, buffs and group content. Forever’s level-60 ceiling could encourage broader endgame goals, but its actual balance will depend on how new rewards and systems interact.

3. Authenticity versus convenience
Armstrong’s stated principles are unusually explicit: “Convenience is the death of the journey,” “If you’re making a game for everyone then you’re making it for no one,” and “Every change we make incurs a debt to the authenticity of the game and sooner or later that debt will be paid.” These lines signal that Forever will deliberately reject some modern shortcuts if they weaken the feeling of the original journey.
4. Player voice and governance
OSRS polling is often cited as a way to make a classic game accountable to its community. A Blizzard forum proposal suggested using a similar system for Forever, including a claimed 70% approval threshold. That remains a player’s proposal, not an announced Blizzard policy, so the governance question is unresolved.
Best Value
Can WoW: Forever replace OSRS?
There is no evidence to answer yes. Forever may attract players who value classic MMO pacing, persistent worlds and restrained modernization, but shared audience appeal is not the same as substitution. OSRS and WoW differ in combat, world structure, skills, social routines and progression. A player can reasonably enjoy both, and the existence of an Ironman Forever addon on CurseForge shows practical cross-pollination of ideas rather than proof of mass movement between games.
Should you play OSRS or WoW: Forever?
- Choose OSRS if you want an established live game whose old-school identity has already been shaped by years of updates and a visible polling culture.
- Choose WoW: Forever if you want the 2004 WoW framework, a level-60 ceiling, newly built zones and group content, and a version positioned as distinct from retail WoW.
- Consider both if the appeal is the broader philosophy: classic foundations, meaningful travel and progression that is not reset every expansion.
The practical cost distinction is straightforward: Forever is reported as covered by the existing WoW subscription, with optional Battle.net upgrade packs starting at $30. OSRS’s access terms are not established in the cited material, so no direct price comparison can be made here.
What to watch after launch
- Whether new rewards expand level-60 play horizontally or recreate a conventional gear treadmill.
- How often Forever adds content and whether updates preserve the 2004-era tone.
- Whether convenience features are limited in line with Armstrong’s authenticity principles.
- Whether Blizzard introduces a formal polling or veto system, rather than leaving governance to forum discussion.
- Independent player data showing retention or movement between Forever, Classic, retail WoW and OSRS.
The Bottom Line
WoW: Forever is best understood as an OSRS-style continuation experiment inside 2004 World of Warcraft. It competes with OSRS for attention and mindshare among classic-MMO players, but current evidence does not prove that it is taking OSRS players or market share.
