The most useful way to assess them is to separate what OKX says it does, what a customer can check, and what remains unestablished.
What does OKX’s proof of reserves actually show?
OKX says its Proof of Reserves (PoR) process compares assets in identified on-chain wallets with customer account assets at a particular snapshot time. Its published description names zk-STARK proofs, checks of wallet ownership, and constraints intended to support the reported comparison, including total-balance, non-negative-balance and inclusion checks.

On the Proof of Reserves page, OKX displayed its 47th report for September 2026 with a headline of $27.4 billion in primary assets. That is a dated, company-reported figure for that report—not a current balance-sheet value or proof of all obligations. OKX also says reserve ratios vary by listed asset. A ratio above 100% for one covered asset cannot establish coverage for unlisted assets, all liabilities or a later date.
What a customer can inspect
- The report’s snapshot date and the assets included in the report.
- The listed on-chain wallets and OKX’s described method for checking wallet ownership.
- The reported asset-specific ratios and the page’s self-verification route for user inclusion data.
OKX’s FAQ distinguishes wallet ownership and balance verification from user snapshot data. Those are separate checks: wallet evidence concerns specified on-chain holdings, while an inclusion check concerns whether a customer’s data is represented in the reported snapshot. Follow the verification method published with the relevant report rather than treating a headline figure as a substitute for either check.

What the snapshot does not establish
OKX cautions that a report captures balances at a particular time, excludes tokens outside its scope and does not include transactions made after capture. The comparison therefore does not, by itself, establish every liability, whether assets are encumbered, continuous solvency, the quality of internal decisions or the effectiveness of controls across the company. It is useful evidence about the specified assets and liabilities at that snapshot, not a complete governance or solvency audit.
Which security and custody controls does OKX describe?
OKX’s security overview says it keeps most assets in cold storage and uses multi-signature wallets that require multiple keys to authorize transactions. It also describes customer device management, on-chain detection of risky addresses or decentralized applications, and token-risk detection. These are material descriptions of the company’s stated security approach; the overview does not provide control-by-control independent test results.

Keep platform controls separate from your own account security
Cold storage and transaction authorization concern controls OKX says it operates. They do not remove the need to secure a customer’s own login, devices or recovery information. For self-custody, OKX advises backing up private keys and seed phrases; those secrets should be handled as credentials that can grant control of the relevant wallet.
If you want stronger account authentication, first check the methods supported by your account and region in OKX’s current security settings. FIDO2 security keys are one possible personal hardening measure, but compatibility with a particular OKX setup is not established here. Do not buy a device on the assumption that it will work with your account.

What do OKX’s certifications cover?
In a 2026 announcement, OKX said BSI Group independently assessed certifications for its Operating Service & Support Hub. The announcement says ISO/IEC 27001 certification was extended to that hub and that it newly achieved ISO/IEC 27017 for cloud security and ISO/IEC 27018 for cloud personally identifiable information protection, effective 14 April 2026.
This is a bounded assurance claim: the named assessor and the specified hub are relevant, but the announcement does not establish that every certificate covers every OKX legal entity, system, service or geographic operation on identical terms. OKX’s announcement also discusses licensed entities in Singapore, the UAE, the Bahamas, the United States, Turkey and Malta; that list should not be read as a certificate-scope map or as proof that any particular service is available to every reader.

What compliance controls does OKX say it uses?
OKX’s Risk & Compliance Disclosure describes a risk-based, multi-layer program. It says the company identifies customers, checks beneficial owners for entities, conducts risk-based due diligence, screens against named government sanctions lists, and monitors for suspicious activity, with reports to local regulators where required.
The disclosure explains the broad layers, but the reviewed material does not provide enough detail to independently assess screening performance, escalation rates or regulator findings. OKX also warns that services may be restricted or unavailable in some locations. Which legal entity serves a customer and which local rules apply depend on jurisdiction, so platform-wide statements should not be treated as a guarantee of identical access or protections everywhere.

Does the OKX Security Fund protect individual customers?
Not as insurance or general reimbursement. OKX describes the Security Fund as company property and a risk-management mechanism principally intended to address certain liquidation shortfalls in leveraged trading. It says customers have no beneficial interest or legal claim to the fund, and that OKX retains discretion over its size, composition and use.
OKX states: “The Security Fund is not an insurance policy, a custodial protection fund, or a guarantee against user losses.” The disclosure does not establish that the fund reimburses losses caused by a customer’s trading decisions, account compromise or a platform failure.
How to assess OKX’s governance evidence
For a practical review, judge each disclosure against the question it can actually answer, rather than treating a security feature, reserve figure or certificate as a proxy for the whole organization.

- Time: Is the evidence a dated reserve snapshot, a description of an operating control or a periodic certification?
- Independence: Who assessed the claim, and is the method or assessment report available for scrutiny?
- Verifiability: Can a customer reproduce the wallet-ownership or account-inclusion check?
- Liabilities: Does the evidence address listed assets only, or all liabilities and possible asset encumbrances?
- Recourse: Does a mechanism protect an individual customer, platform stability or only a narrow event such as a liquidation shortfall?
- Jurisdiction: Which entity serves the customer, and what local terms and disclosures apply?
The reviewed public materials do not establish group-wide ownership details, board oversight, a comprehensive incident history or the effectiveness of the full control environment. They also do not map each cited certification to every operating entity and system. That is an evidence boundary, not proof that incidents or governance concerns exist—or that they do not.
