Trump announced the claimed agreement on Sunday, October 11. Reuters attributed Monday’s oil decline to expectations that a halt in attacks on energy infrastructure could allow more Russian supply to reach the market. That was a market expectation, not evidence that additional oil had already arrived.

Oil prices respond to anticipated changes in supply as well as to actual production and shipments. The prospect of fewer disruptions can reduce the risk premium traders attach to crude, even before a ceasefire’s terms or effects are clear. But if attacks continue or the arrangement proves short-lived, the expected supply relief may not materialize.
Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, cautioned: “Questions remain over the validity and longevity of any such ceasefire, and without clearer evidence that it will actually hold, the extent of the pullback is likely to stay limited.” Reuters, republished by MarketScreener, carried his assessment.

Was there a confirmed agreement to stop attacks?
The available accounts do not establish that Russia and Ukraine had confirmed a sustained ceasefire. Trump wrote that an “ENERGY CEASEFIRE” was effective immediately and that “Both parties have agreed,” but the Associated Press reported that his post supplied no further details and that Moscow had not immediately commented.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the announcement “good news for everyone,” while also saying Russian attacks on energy infrastructure were continuing, according to the Associated Press. The announcement, Ukraine’s response, reports of continuing attacks and the absence of an immediate Russian comment are distinct facts; none alone demonstrates that attacks stopped or that an agreement held.

Why did stocks rise while the ceasefire remained uncertain?
Agence France-Presse reported that most stock markets rose on Monday as oil prices tumbled. The reported direction is consistent with investors welcoming the possibility of lower energy costs and reduced supply risk. But uncertainty about whether the claimed arrangement would hold remained, and the AFP account does not provide benchmark-specific moves. It therefore supports a broad description, not precise claims about individual indexes or their closing performance.
AFP, republished by Yahoo News Malaysia, reported the broad market rise. The oil prices above are Reuters observations from 0037 GMT; they should not be treated as simultaneous with later market updates or as end-of-day results.
