The practical change is that organizations should not expect Microsoft fixes or security updates for Office LTSC 2021 after support ends. The announcement does not specify a final patch by KB number or confirm that a particular last update shipped on October 13.

Choose a supported successor based on how your organization works
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Microsoft 365 Apps to remain in a supported environment. For commercial organizations that are not ready to move to the cloud, it identifies Office LTSC 2024 as its latest supported on-premises version. The products use different licensing and servicing models:

When LTSC may make sense
Microsoft describes LTSC for particular cases where a stable feature set is important or feature updates are unsuitable—for example, regulated devices that cannot accept feature updates, manufacturing process-control devices, and specialty systems that cannot connect to the internet. That is a specific deployment rationale, not a recommendation that every organization should choose LTSC.

When to consider Microsoft 365 Apps
Consider Microsoft 365 Apps if your organization is prepared for a subscription model and ongoing feature changes, and wants Microsoft’s cloud-connected route. Confirm which business or enterprise plan meets your organization’s requirements before planning deployment; Microsoft’s guidance notes that the apps are available through many such plans.
Plan the transition before support ends
- Inventory Office LTSC 2021 installations. Identify affected devices, their users, and any applications or workflows that depend on the current Office setup.
- Choose the servicing model. Decide whether a subscription with continuing feature updates fits, or whether a fixed-feature on-premises version is required for a specific operational or regulatory reason.
- Confirm licensing and deployment requirements. For LTSC 2024, Microsoft describes a volume-license purchase for one device per license. For Microsoft 365 Apps, review the available business and enterprise plans and select one that fits your organization.
- Test the chosen version against critical workflows. Validate documents, add-ins, integrations, and specialized devices before rolling out a change broadly.
- Schedule deployment ahead of October 13, 2026. Completing the transition before the cutoff reduces the risk of remaining on a product that no longer receives Microsoft security updates.
Migration support for larger deployments
Microsoft says organizations with more than 150 licenses can consider FastTrack for migration support. The announcement gives that threshold as an option, not a guarantee that every organization will qualify for or receive a particular service; confirm current eligibility and terms with Microsoft.
