Of Swipes, Reels and Sprints: Vithya Ramraj’s Star Turn

Vithya Ramraj’s breakthrough at the 2026 Asian Games brought medals, a new 400m hurdles personal best and sudden online attention into the same moment. After her parents told her they kept seeing her face as they swiped through their phones, the Indian sprinter from Coimbatore checked Instagram and saw how widely clips of her races were circulating.

Three Asian Games medals, across three events

Hindustan Times reported on October 1, 2026, that Ramraj won three medals at the Asian Games: gold in the women’s 4x400m relay, silver in the mixed 4x400m relay and bronze in the 400m hurdles. Each result came in a different event, and the relay gold supplied the finish that made her most visible online.

Gold: the women’s 4x400m relay

According to the Hindustan Times account, Ramraj ran the anchor leg, chased down China’s Siyu Zuo and then held off Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser. India won in 3:29.69, ahead of Bahrain’s 3:30.21. World Athletics’ season-best listing for Ramraj also records a 3:29.69 4x400m relay performance.

Silver: the mixed 4x400m relay

India’s mixed relay team took silver. Hindustan Times reported that coach Nehpal Singh asked Ramraj whether she would anchor. She initially worried about the pressure of waiting through the earlier legs, but accepted after he encouraged her.

Bronze: the 400m hurdles

Ramraj’s hurdles bronze came with a 54.75-second performance. World Athletics lists 54.75 as her personal best, achieved on September 28, 2026, at Municipal Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya. Hindustan Times reported that the time broke P. T. Usha’s 55.42-second Indian national record. World Athletics’ cited profile confirms Ramraj’s time, date and venue; the record comparison is attributed here to the newspaper’s report.

From equalling Usha’s mark to breaking it

The record story began before the 2026 Games. Hindustan Times says Ramraj equalled Usha’s 55.42-second national record at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The report also describes her disappointment that the earlier medal win had not brought the online attention she had hoped for.

In the 2026 account, Ramraj recalled that Usha told her “records are meant to be broken.” Her 54.75-second run moved her beyond that mark. It is a personal best and, as reported by Hindustan Times, an Indian national record; it should not be confused with a world or Asian record.

Why the reels and follower count changed

Before the 2026 competition, Singh urged Ramraj to concentrate on training rather than posting race reels or posters. As Ramraj recounted his advice to Hindustan Times: “You win medals and followers will come.” The relay finish and hurdles performance gave viewers striking moments to share, while her parents’ remark about seeing her face with every phone swipe prompted her to look at the clips herself.

Hindustan Times reported that her Instagram following rose from 5,000 to 65,000 after the Games. Those figures are the article’s snapshot on October 1, 2026, not a verified current follower total. Ramraj told the newspaper, “I feel like I am the star of Instagram today.” The online response accompanied her athletic breakthrough; the account does not establish a broader trend about social media or athletes generally.

Her stated target: under 54 seconds

In the October 1 interview, Ramraj said she wanted to run the 400m hurdles in under 54 seconds and compete in international meets ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That is her goal as stated at the time, not a prediction or a result already achieved.

The Athletics Federation of India’s Asian Games 2026 team page lists Ramraj in the women’s 400m hurdles and women’s 4x400m relay context. World Athletics’ athlete profile provides her performance record and medal overview; its live rankings and season-best listings can change.
