Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most families of four, Odoo Online is the easier option if they have a real need for an ERP system; self-hosted Odoo Community is worth considering only when someone can operate it and the household needs control or code-level customization. Four people in a family do not automatically require four paid accounts, and Community’s free software license does not make a self-hosted system cost-free. First decide whether your household actually needs connected business workflows, then compare the users, hosting, maintenance, and customization those workflows require.
What are you choosing between?
Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition of Odoo. Odoo’s version 19 documentation says Community 19 is licensed under LGPLv3 (Odoo licensing documentation). The software can be installed on systems you choose, but you are responsible for the deployment and the infrastructure around it.

Odoo Online is a private database hosted and managed by Odoo and accessed in a browser. It removes the need for you to run the server, but it has a key limit: Odoo says Online cannot run custom modules or modules from the Odoo Apps Store. It does allow customizations that do not require code (Odoo Online documentation).
Community self-hosting and paid Enterprise self-hosting are not interchangeable. Enterprise has separate subscription and licensing terms; Odoo’s agreement describes Enterprise software as licensed for the subscription duration (Odoo Enterprise agreement). Confirm the edition and subscription required for any Enterprise features before treating them as part of a Community setup.

Does a family of four need an ERP?
Household size alone is not a reason to adopt an ERP. Odoo is more likely to make sense when the family has specific workflows that benefit from connected business applications—for example, managing business documents or coordinating processes across several functions. If the goal is only to track household spending or share a calendar, the case for setting up and maintaining an ERP is not established by the number of people in the household.
Decide based on the work you need the software to do, the applications you need, and whether your accounting requirements depend on your jurisdiction. The available Odoo materials do not establish which configuration or accounting support is right for a particular family.

How many paid users would four family members count as?
Odoo’s pricing page defines a paying user as someone with backend access to create, view, or edit documents, with some exceptions for employee records. Portal customers and suppliers are examples of free users. So the relevant count is the number of family members who need backend access—not the number of people in the household (Odoo pricing).
Before comparing subscriptions, list who needs to create, view, or edit records in the backend and who might use portal access instead. Do not assume all four need paid seats.

What does Odoo Online cost?
Odoo’s US pricing page displayed the following prices when observed on October 3, 2026. They are per user, vary by billing cadence where shown, and can change. Check the page for current pricing before subscribing.
| Plan | US price displayed October 3, 2026 | Hosting and features listed |
|---|---|---|
| One App Free | $0 | One app; see Odoo’s pricing page for current plan terms. |
| Standard | US$24.90 per user/month with annual billing; US$31.10 per user/month with monthly billing | All apps; Odoo Online hosting included. |
| Custom | US$49.00 per user/month with annual billing; US$61.00 per user/month with monthly billing | All apps; Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or on-premise hosting, plus Studio, multi-company, and External API. |
Odoo says Odoo.sh hosting for custom development, implementation, and expert services are not included in the listed plan price. A plan’s headline price is therefore not necessarily the full price of a customized deployment or outside help.
What does self-hosted Community really cost?
Community’s license price is zero, but a self-hosted deployment still needs computer systems and someone to operate them. That can mean infrastructure or hardware, backups, security work, and upgrades, as well as the operator’s time. Odoo’s sources do not quantify those costs, the annual maintenance hours, or a minimum home-server specification; there is no reliable basis here for naming a total or recommending a particular computer.
Odoo’s database guide describes source installation as flexible and potentially suitable as a production base. It also describes packaged installers as usable for long-term production with additional deployment and maintenance work, and offers a Docker base image for development or deployment (Odoo database installation documentation). These are deployment paths, not evidence that setup or ongoing operations will be effortless for a household.

Who handles backups and recovery?
For Online, Odoo’s documentation says databases are backed up daily under its Cloud Hosting SLA and that a ZIP backup can be downloaded. Its pricing page also describes included incremental daily backups on two continents (Odoo Online documentation; Odoo pricing). A managed backup arrangement reduces the household’s routine backup work, but you should still understand how you would retrieve a backup and what recovery options apply.
Recommended Free Tools
With self-hosting, you choose and operate the systems outside Odoo’s control. The cited materials do not prescribe a backup or restore plan for a home deployment, so the person running it needs to decide how backups will be made, stored, and tested.
When does customization make self-hosting relevant?
If you need custom modules or third-party Apps Store modules, Odoo Online is not compatible with that requirement according to Odoo’s documentation. Odoo’s current pricing page associates custom development hosting with Odoo.sh or on-premise options under Custom; confirm the precise edition and subscription needed before relying on Enterprise capabilities (Odoo pricing; Odoo Online documentation).
If your changes do not require code, Online may still fit. Avoid choosing self-hosting simply for hypothetical flexibility: it trades the managed service for responsibility for the operating environment.
How to decide
- Identify the workflow. Write down the business or household processes that actually need connected applications. If there is no concrete workflow problem, do not treat four household members as a reason to deploy an ERP.
- Count backend users. Determine who needs to create, view, or edit documents in the backend; household members who only need portal access may not be paying users under Odoo’s definition.
- Check code requirements. If custom modules or Apps Store modules are essential, rule out Odoo Online and verify the edition, subscription, and hosting needed for the alternative.
- Compare full operating costs. For self-hosting, account for equipment or hosting, backups, security, upgrades, and the operator’s time. For Online, calculate the subscription for actual paid users and include any separate services or hosting costs that apply.
- Choose who owns operations. Choose Online if you want Odoo to manage hosting and daily backups. Choose Community self-hosting only if the household has someone able and willing to run and maintain the system.
Odoo says on its pricing page, “You own your data!” and says Online databases can be downloaded as backups. Treat that as Odoo’s statement, not as a guarantee that every export will be complete for your needs or that moving to another deployment will require no migration work.
