Hindustan Times reported on October 1 that police registered a case naming six people, including two women. The alleged events and the police response below are attributed to the woman’s account and the newspaper’s report; they are not court findings.
What the woman alleged happened in Banitia
According to Hindustan Times, the woman said a group entered her home while her husband and son were away and beat her on suspicion of witchcraft. She alleged that the assault continued in the street, where she was stripped and beaten.
She also told the newspaper that villagers stopped the auto-rickshaw taking her for treatment, pulled her out and assaulted her again. The report says police later reached the village, rescued her and took her to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital. These details are the woman’s account as reported; the article does not describe an independent verification of each allegation.
What police said about the complaint
The woman lodged a complaint on the Wednesday before the October 1 report. Hindustan Times said police registered a case naming six people, including two women. The report did not give an FIR number or specify the offences registered.

What Odisha’s witch-hunting law and policy context establish
The Odisha Police Crime Against Women and Children wing identifies the Odisha Prevention of Witch-Hunting Act, 2013 and describes witch-hunting as a deplorable practice. Its page also discusses constitutional protections and examples of criminal-law provisions that may be invoked in such cases. The incident report does not say which statutory sections police registered here, so no particular charge can be inferred.
