If your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 microphone is silent, first determine whether the failure affects one app or every app. Test voice chat or a recording in at least two apps, then check the headset mute control, the affected app’s microphone permission, and the microphone openings near the nose. Restart the headset before trying a hard reboot. A PC Link input-meter test can show whether Windows detects the internal microphone. On managed headsets, an administrator policy may be blocking access. Factory reset is a last resort because it erases local data.
Start by separating an app problem from a headset problem
A microphone that fails only in one game usually needs an app-level fix. A microphone that fails in every game, voice chat and recording points to a headset setting, obstruction, policy or hardware fault. This distinction prevents you from erasing the headset when only one app is misconfigured.

| What you observe | Most likely control layer | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Voice works in some apps but not one game | The game’s permission, mute setting or software | Re-enable microphone access for that app, check its in-app mute and submit its bug report |
| No app can record or transmit your voice | Headset mute, permission, obstruction, reboot, policy or hardware | Complete the headset-wide checks below, then run the PC Link test |
| Every app fails, but the Windows input meter moves | Quest app, account, permission or system state | Toggle mute and permissions again, reboot, and update the affected app and headset |
| Every app fails and Windows shows no input | Obstruction, cable/connection or internal hardware | Inspect the openings, try a known-good Link connection and contact Meta Support |
| The headset belongs to an organization | Administrator policy | Ask the administrator to review the microphone policy before resetting |
How do I test the internal Quest 2 microphone without a PC or Link cable?
There is no separate microphone diagnostic meter on the standalone headset. The practical no-PC test is to use several applications that request microphone access:
- Join a voice-enabled experience or call in one app and speak normally.
- Make a short recording in another app that supports voice capture.
- Play back the recording or ask another participant whether your voice is audible.
- Repeat in a third app if the first two results disagree.
If recording and voice chat work in at least one app, the internal microphone is producing usable audio and the failing app needs its own permission, mute or bug-report path. If every test is silent, continue with the headset-wide checks. Meta Community Support states that, because the microphone is internal hardware, there is no alternative standalone hardware test; the documented recognition test uses Oculus Link and a Windows input meter.

Fix a microphone that fails in only one app
Re-enable that app’s microphone permission
Quest apps must ask for microphone consent. Meta’s Voice SDK documentation explains that users must consent when the app launches; if permission was denied, recording remains blocked until it is enabled again in the Quest system settings under the app’s permissions.
- Open the Quest system settings and locate the affected app’s permission controls.
- Set Microphone to Allow. If it is already allowed, turn it off, close the settings, then turn it on again.
- Force-close and relaunch the app so it requests permission afresh.
- When a consent dialog appears, choose the option that permits microphone use.
Menu wording can vary by Quest software version, so look for the app entry and its Permissions or Microphone control rather than relying on an identical label.
Check the app’s own mute controls
Games and social spaces often have a separate microphone icon, party mute, push-to-talk mode or privacy setting. Unmute yourself in the app, leave and rejoin the voice channel, and verify that push-to-talk is not waiting for a controller button. A system-level mute can override these controls, so complete the next section if the icon appears active but no one hears you.

Horizon Worlds: submit an in-app report after the basic checks
For a microphone that is silent only in Horizon Worlds, verify its permission and in-world mute first. If the issue persists, use the four-controller-button bug-report shortcut documented by Meta Support while the problem is occurring. Include the world name, headset software version, whether other apps can hear you and the time of the failure. That information helps separate a world-specific defect from an account or device issue.
Fix a microphone that fails everywhere
Toggle the Quest microphone mute state
- Open Settings > Audio. Some Quest guidance labels this area System > Sound.
- Confirm that Microphone is not muted.
- Toggle the microphone off, wait a few seconds, and toggle it on again.
- Run the multi-app test again.
Do this even if the icon looked unmuted. A stale audio state can survive an app restart and be cleared by switching the control twice.
Remove anything covering the microphone openings
Quest 2 microphone openings sit near the nose on both sides of the headset. Check both openings in good light. Remove unsupported facial interfaces, nose guards, stickers and other accessories that could cover them. Keep the area clean with a soft, dry method appropriate for the headset; never push a pin, needle or other sharp object into an opening. Refit the facial interface and test again.
Restart the headset normally
- Save or close the current app.
- Hold the Power button and choose the on-screen restart or power-off command.
- Wait for the headset to shut down fully, then power it on.
- Test recording and voice chat in more than one app.
A complete restart reloads audio services and is less destructive than a reset. If the headset is frozen or a normal restart changes nothing, use the hard-reboot procedure.

- Hold Power and Volume Down together for about 30 seconds.
- Keep holding until you hear the boot sound or see the boot screen.
- If the boot menu requires a choice, select Boot Device with the headset controls.
- After startup, repeat the mute, permission and multi-app tests.
This procedure does not intentionally erase your apps or account. It is a forced restart for cases in which the normal software path is unresponsive.
Install pending software updates
After rebooting, check for a pending Quest system update and update the affected app from the headset’s library or store interface. A mismatch between an app and the current system can cause one-app voice failures. Test again after each update so you know which change affected the result.

Use a PC Link test to see whether Windows recognizes the internal mic
The Link test is useful when every standalone app fails. It does not repair the Quest, but it separates an audio-recognition problem from an app or account problem.
- Connect Quest 2 to a Windows PC with a compatible Oculus Link USB-C cable.
- Put on the headset and accept the Link connection prompt if it appears.
- In Windows, open Start > Settings > System > Sounds.
- Under Input, select Oculus Quest 2 microphone.
- Speak at a normal volume while watching the input-level meter.
| Windows result | Interpretation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The input meter moves | Windows is receiving audio from the internal mic | Return to Quest permissions, mute state, app updates and reboot checks |
| The device is listed but the meter stays still | The connection is recognized, but no microphone signal is arriving | Reconnect, try another known-good Link cable or USB connection, then contact Meta Support if standalone tests also fail |
| No Quest microphone appears | Windows is not recognizing the audio endpoint | Reconnect Link, verify the cable supports Link, and escalate if another known-good connection gives the same result |
Use a cable that is known to support Oculus Link rather than a charge-only USB-C lead. If you do not have access to a compatible cable or Windows PC, rely on the multi-app test and proceed to support when the failure is consistent across apps.
Check whether an administrator disabled the microphone
Organization-managed Quest headsets can receive policies through Meta Horizon Device Manager. An administrator can disable microphone access globally or allow it only for selected apps. If the headset belongs to a school, employer, clinic or other managed environment, ask the administrator to inspect that policy and permit the app you need. Do this before a factory reset: a reset may remove local data without changing a cloud-managed restriction.

When to contact Meta Support
Contact Meta Support when the microphone fails consistently across multiple apps after permission, mute, obstruction, restart and Link checks. Tell support:
- Which apps were tested and whether any app worked.
- Whether Microphone permission was allowed and toggled.
- Whether the openings were clear and unsupported accessories removed.
- Whether a normal restart and Power-plus-Volume-Down hard reboot changed anything.
- Whether Windows listed Oculus Quest 2 under Input and whether its meter moved.
- Whether the headset is organization-managed.
Meta Community Support recommends contacting the support team and submitting a ticket when the issue occurs consistently throughout multiple games or apps. This pattern makes an app-only bug less likely and gives support the evidence needed for further troubleshooting.
Factory reset: the final software step
A factory reset returns Quest 2 to a like-new state and wipes information stored on the headset. It cannot repair a blocked microphone opening or failed internal component, so use it only after the earlier checks and support guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Enable Quest Cloud Backup first where it is supported, and confirm that important saves or settings have synchronized.
- Record your account credentials and any app-specific setup you will need after setup.
- Use the headset’s factory-reset command in Settings, or follow Meta Support’s current reset instructions if the menus differ on your software version.
- Complete initial setup, reinstall one voice-enabled app and test the microphone before restoring everything else.
If the microphone remains silent across apps after a clean setup, stop repeating resets and arrange service or replacement advice through Meta Support. No reset can guarantee recovery from an internal hardware failure.
A least-destructive troubleshooting order
Follow this order so each test answers a different question while preserving your data:
Quick Recap
- Test voice or recording in two or more apps.
- If one app fails, fix its permission, in-app mute and bug report.
- If all apps fail, toggle Settings > Audio (or System > Sound) microphone mute.
- Clear both microphone openings and remove covering accessories.
- Restart, then hard-reboot with Power plus Volume Down for about 30 seconds if necessary.
- Install pending headset and app updates.
- On a managed device, have the administrator check microphone policy.
- Use the Oculus Link Windows input-meter test when possible.
- Contact Meta Support for persistent cross-app failure.
- Back up supported data and factory-reset only as a final software step.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card, followed by a subscription. Results vary, and it cannot repair every microphone or headset failure.
