That distinction matters. Octopath Traveler made the look legible as a branded format: readers could identify the contrast between pixel characters, perspective-rich environments, lighting, depth effects and modern rendering as a deliberate visual language rather than an isolated experiment. What does HD-2D mean?
HD-2D combines two visual layers:

How the series established its reach
The original Octopath Traveler launched in 2018 and, by Square Enix’s 2022 announcement, had passed three million worldwide shipments and downloads. That figure combined physical shipments and digital downloads, so it should not be read as a single measure of retail sales.
Square Enix Asia later reported that the series had exceeded four million copies worldwide. The milestone indicates that the HD-2D concept was not confined to a niche visual showcase. It became the foundation for a continuing property with enough audience recognition to support new entries and broader platform distribution.

Should you play Octopath Traveler or Octopath Traveler II first?
You can start with either mainline game. Octopath Traveler II is a new adventure in a new land with eight new travelers, so it is not presented as a direct continuation that requires a completed save file from the original.
Choose the first game if you want to experience the 2018 starting point and see the original form of the HD-2D concept. Choose Octopath Traveler II if you want the newer standalone entry and the broadest current platform selection. Playing the first game is useful for historical context, not a prerequisite for understanding the sequel.

Yes, a Nintendo Switch 2 version was announced for October 1, 2026. Square Enix said the Switch 2 editions of both mainline games would improve resolution and frame rate. Why the trailblazer label still fits
