Octopath Traveler II is a standalone, single-player JRPG built around eight character-led stories, tactical turn-based battles, and retro-inspired HD-2D visuals. It is an easy entry point if you have not played the first game, but its extended adventure and recurring battles are a better fit for players who enjoy a substantial traditional RPG than for anyone seeking a brisk, action-led experience.

Do you need to play the first Octopath Traveler?

No. Square Enix places the sequel in Solistia, a world independent of the first game, with eight original travelers. The publisher describes it as suitable for newcomers as well as returning fans. Its July 13, 2026 announcement calls it “the perfect entry for newcomers to the series,” while noting that it preserves and develops the original’s HD-2D style. Read Square Enix’s announcement.

The premise is straightforward: choose among eight travelers, each with a distinct origin, motivation, skills, and ways of interacting with people and the world. Their individual stories give the adventure its character-led structure; the shared appeal is the combination of exploration and tactical combat rather than a requirement to know events from the first game.

How do the stories and combat work?

Eight travelers, different ways to explore

Each traveler has a Path Action: an ability used outside battle to interact with townspeople. Depending on the action, you can challenge someone to a fight, obtain an item, or bring a person along. These interactions give towns more purpose than simply serving as stops between battles. The world also includes sailing and a day-to-night cycle, adding variety to exploration.

Octopath Traveler II - PlayStation 5
  • Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills
  • The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights
  • The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish; You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night
  • Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more; Where will you go, What will you do, Every path is yours to take
  • Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating; New mechanics have also been added

Turn-based battles reward planning

Combat is turn-based and uses the series’ Break and Boost systems. The tactical draw is choosing how to develop jobs and skills and when to apply them in a fight. That structure favors players who like to consider party options and battle timing over those who want real-time action.

Selected critic-review excerpts praise the combat strategy, customization, exploration, stories, visuals, and sound. One excerpt mentions occasional grinding. These are themes in selected reviews, not a numerical review consensus; the excerpts also describe a sequel that refines its predecessor’s ideas rather than abandoning them. See the critic-review excerpts on Metacritic.

What is the HD-2D presentation like?

The game combines retro-style 2D characters with a three-dimensional world, a visual approach Square Enix calls HD-2D. The style is central to the game’s identity, while the sound and music are also among the elements praised in selected critic-review excerpts. The official descriptions establish the intended look; they are not a substitute for a platform-specific visual or performance test.

Who is Octopath Traveler II best for?

  • A good fit: players who enjoy traditional turn-based JRPGs, party and skill customization, exploration, and following several character stories.
  • Think twice if: you want a short, fast-moving campaign or primarily action-led combat. The extended story structure and recurring battles may feel like a commitment, and a critic-review excerpt notes occasional grinding.

That fit assessment follows from the game’s format and the limited review themes cited above; it is not a universal measure of how long the game takes or how much grinding every player will encounter.

Which platforms can you play it on?

Square Enix’s July 2026 platform list includes Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Xbox on PC. Availability can vary by region and store, so confirm the listing for the platform and territory you plan to use. The original game launched February 24, 2023; Square Enix lists February 25, 2023 as the Steam release date.

What changed in the Switch 2 version?

The Nintendo Switch 2 edition launched October 1, 2026. Square Enix says it was optimized from the original Switch release for improved resolution and frame rate. That is the publisher’s specification, not an independent measurement of performance. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 edition separately, says it cannot be played on the original Switch, and warns that save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Check which version you are buying and which hardware you own before purchasing. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 product listing.

Is Octopath Traveler II included with Game Pass?

Square Enix announced Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One availability in June 2024 and said the game was then included in Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. That announcement describes availability at that time, not the current subscription catalog. Check the relevant Game Pass listing for present inclusion in your region.

What should you know about sales figures?

Square Enix reported more than 6 million copies shipped and sold worldwide for the Octopath Traveler series in 2026; that figure is for the series, not for Octopath Traveler II alone. Nintendo’s product listing says the first game had sold over 3 million copies worldwide, without stating a year for that figure. Neither number establishes sequel-specific sales.
