Oct. 1, 1847: How Maria Mitchell Discovered “Miss Mitchell’s Comet”

On October 1, 1847, Maria Mitchell spotted a faint, blurry object through a small reflecting telescope from a rooftop in Nantucket, Massachusetts. It was a comet—not charted among the stars she was observing. The discovery, now identified as C/1847 T1, brought Mitchell international recognition.

What did Maria Mitchell discover on October 1, 1847?

Mitchell discovered a comet later popularly called “Miss Mitchell’s Comet.” Its modern designation is C/1847 T1; the National Park Service also records the historical catalog label Comet 1847 VI. The discovery took place in Nantucket, where Mitchell was observing the night sky from a rooftop. The National Park Service’s account identifies October 1 as the discovery date.

How did Mitchell recognize the comet?

Mitchell was using the family’s 2-inch reflecting telescope, according to an Astronomy.com history feature published October 1, 2026. She noticed a blurry object that did not appear on her charts. Rather than relying on that first sighting alone, she continued observing it to verify that it was a comet.

The object was telescopic: a contemporary popular account described it as not visible to the naked eye. Mitchell’s find was therefore not a bright comet casually noticed in the sky, but an observation made with an instrument and checked against the stars she knew.

How was the discovery reported and recognized?

Mitchell continued observing before the discovery was announced. On October 3, her father sent notice to Cambridge. Other observers saw the comet around the same period, including Father de Vico in Rome; Mitchell’s priority was nevertheless recognized. The American Philosophical Society’s account says she received Denmark’s medal offered for the discovery of new comets. Astronomy.com’s account describes the observations and notice, while the American Philosophical Society records the recognition.

Why did the comet matter to Maria Mitchell’s career?

The discovery made Mitchell internationally known, but it was one milestone in a larger scientific career. In 1848 she was elected the first woman Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, according to the National Park Service. In 1865 she became professor of astronomy at Vassar College and director of its observatory, roles noted by the Maria Mitchell Association.

A report by Joseph Henry, the Smithsonian’s founding Secretary, praised the event in 1848 as “the discovery of which by an American lady is one of the first additions to science of this kind, so far as I am informed, ever made in this country.” The Smithsonian Institution Archives preserves Henry’s period wording; it reflects the language and perspective of its time. Where did the observation take place?

Accounts connect Mitchell’s observing rooftop with her family home and the Pacific National Bank, where her father worked. The descriptions do not all specify the setting in the same way, so “a rooftop in Nantucket” is the clearest consistent description. The Maria Mitchell Association preserves her history and offers astronomy, natural-science, and educational programming; its site has current visitor information at mariamitchell.org.
