Ocarina of Time’s Forest Temple: Why It’s Still an All-Timer

Spoilers for the Forest Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In the fourth entry of Nintendo Life’s weekly dungeon-by-dungeon retrospective, Jim Norman revisits the Forest Temple and makes a case for its lasting appeal: it looks open and disorienting, but rewards players who learn how its spaces connect. His admiration is personal rather than a claim of consensus—and he also has a few ideas for what a remake could improve.

A dungeon that feels open, then reveals its order

Norman calls the Forest Temple a favorite, praising how it brings together a central hub, puzzle-solving, and a major challenge built around lighting four torches. From the central chamber, several routes appear to be available, but locked doors and blocked passages prevent a simple march from room to room. Progress comes from exploring, noticing what is inaccessible, and building a mental picture of how the rooms fit together.

That distinction gives the temple its character: seeing a doorway is not the same as being able to reach it. Norman highlights twisting corridors that can be turned and untwisted, looping walkways, and entrances visible well before Link can get to them. The dungeon asks players to understand its layout, not just check every door.

The bow changes how the temple opens up

Finding the bow is a satisfying turning point in Norman’s account. With it, Link can return to eye switches that were previously out of reach and use them to alter the environment. Backtracking becomes purposeful: rooms and routes encountered earlier take on new significance once the player has the right tool.

#1 Best Overall
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
  • The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
  • “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes

The payoff is less about collecting another item than about seeing the dungeon differently. The bow turns remembered obstacles into solvable problems and makes the temple’s connected structure easier to grasp.

Unease is part of the design

Norman argues that the Forest Temple’s mood comes from the spaces between its puzzles as much as from the puzzles themselves. Long, empty corridors, falling checkered ceilings, Wallmasters, and looping music contribute to an unsettling, liminal atmosphere in his reading of the dungeon. The combination makes wandering feel uncertain even when the next objective is not immediately threatening.

Phantom Ganon makes the finale memorable

Norman describes the Phantom Ganon fight as a test of attention: watch the running paintings to identify where the boss will emerge, then volley its power bolts back at it. He recalls being frightened by the encounter as a child and says it still unsettles him. That reaction is his own, but it fits the temple’s broader use of uncertainty and misdirection.

What Norman would change in a remake

Norman’s enthusiasm does not mean he would leave every part untouched. He would welcome a few quality-of-life changes, offered as suggestions rather than confirmed remake features:

  • Shortcuts to later winding paths: these could reduce the burden of retracing long routes.
  • A more detailed map: clearer entrances and exits could help players understand how the temple connects.
  • Updated camera controls for the boss encounter: a control refresh could make the Phantom Ganon fight easier to manage.

The proposals target friction around navigation and camera handling without removing the spatial puzzle that Norman values. The feature does not establish a remake’s release date or specifications, so these ideas should not be mistaken for announced changes.

Why it remains an all-timer for Norman

Norman’s case rests on the way the Forest Temple makes navigation part of the puzzle. Its hub, four-torch challenge, blocked routes, twisting corridors, bow-driven return trips, and unsettling atmosphere all reinforce a single idea: progress depends on learning the place. He sums up his personal affection by saying “the Forest Temple might just be my favourite Zelda dungeon ever.”
