The short answer: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Grand Theft Auto VI represent almost opposite ideas of an open world. Ocarina of Time is a compact, densely authored adventure in which Hyrule Field routes you toward themed regions, dungeons, equipment and time-based discoveries. GTA 6 is presented as a broader, state-wide crime sandbox centered on Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida. If you mean geographic breadth and the freedom to move around an American-inspired state, GTA 6 is the more open setting. If you mean how much deliberately placed content each area performs for the story, puzzles and progression, Ocarina of Time is the denser design.
That distinction matters because there is no verified official map-area figure for either game. Comparing them by square miles, NPC totals or activity counts would create a false precision. The useful comparison is structural: authored hub-and-spoke adventure versus broad sandbox geography; item, song and dungeon gates versus a crime narrative spread across a state; and mythic time travel versus contemporary criminal drama.

At a glance: two very different kinds of openness
| Question | Ocarina of Time | Grand Theft Auto VI |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Hyrule, spanning two eras of Link’s journey | Vice City and the wider state of Leonida |
| Map structure | Hyrule Field acts as a central meadow connecting strongly themed destinations | A state-wide setting with Vice City as its anchor; official material names regions including the Leonida Keys and Grassrivers |
| Primary design | Authored adventure: puzzles, dungeons, secrets and progression gates | Crime sandbox: Jason and Lucia’s story unfolds through a conspiracy across Leonida |
| Progression | Equipment, songs, dungeons and changing eras open routes forward | Official pages confirm the criminal narrative and geography, but do not enumerate a complete mission-gating system |
| Confirmed traversal | Dash, leap over gaps and obstacles, ride a steed, and explore at night | Multiple platforms and regional geography are confirmed; the cited pages do not publish a complete traversal feature list |
| Time | Two eras and day/night changes are central to discovery | Contemporary setting; no comparable time-travel system is described in the cited official material |
| Official map-size number | Not stated | Not stated |
So the answer depends on the word open. GTA 6 appears more open geographically. Ocarina of Time is more tightly authored, but it still gives you meaningful route choices inside its adventure structure.
How Hyrule Field and Leonida organize space
Ocarina of Time’s hub-and-spoke Hyrule
Nintendo describes Hyrule Field as “a central meadow that serves as a gateway to bustling towns, a foreboding volcano, a picturesque lake, a harsh desert and many other interesting places.” That sentence captures the map’s job: the field is not merely empty distance between levels. It is the connective tissue that makes each destination feel like part of one kingdom while preserving a strong identity for every region.
#1 Best Overall
The result is a hub-and-spoke adventure map. You repeatedly return to a familiar central space, then set out toward a location whose terrain, characters and obstacles change the kind of problem you are solving. A town can establish a social or narrative objective; a volcano, lake or desert can present a different route and environmental challenge. The field keeps the world legible, while the surrounding regions supply variety.
This design is compact rather than small in ambition. A short journey across the field can matter because it places a dungeon, a character encounter, a night-time change or a newly usable ability in a deliberate sequence. Distance is measured less by mileage than by the number of decisions and discoveries packed into a route.
GTA 6’s state-wide frame
Rockstar’s official material places GTA 6 in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Its store material identifies named regional areas such as the Leonida Keys and Grassrivers, while the story description says the criminal conspiracy stretches “across the state of Leonida.” That framing is broader than a single central field with destinations branching from it: the setting is presented as an entire American-inspired state containing an urban anchor and multiple surrounding regions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Rockstar’s story copy follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong. They end up on what the company calls “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America” and must rely on each other while confronting a conspiracy across Leonida. The geography therefore supports a contemporary crime drama that moves between different parts of one state, rather than a fantasy quest that returns to a single adventure hub.
Because the cited official pages do not provide a complete map diagram, square-mile figure or list of every activity, the safest description is broader state-wide sandbox. It does not establish how every region connects, how much of the state is available at each story point, or how dense individual locations will be.
Is Ocarina of Time really an open-world game?
Ocarina of Time is open in the sense that Hyrule is a connected explorable world rather than a sequence of disconnected menu stages. You can cross Hyrule Field, reach towns and natural landmarks, travel on a steed, return at night and pursue discoveries that are not simply the next corridor in a linear level.
It is not open in the modern sandbox sense of granting unrestricted access to every region and system from the opening minutes. The adventure deliberately controls when routes become meaningful. Equipment can make a previously impractical path usable. Songs can open new paths or alter the time of day. Dungeons combine puzzles, enemies and treasures into structured tests. The two eras create another layer of access: the same kingdom is experienced through different versions of time, with changes that affect where and when progress is possible.

The gates are not only locked doors. They are knowledge, tools, songs, time shifts and the completion of dungeon challenges. The player is encouraged to remember a suspicious location and return after gaining the relevant capability. Exploration is therefore part of progression design, not a separate activity performed after the story.

Which game has the more open world?
If openness means the geographic breadth implied by the setting, GTA 6 has the advantage. Leonida is described as a whole state with Vice City and named outlying regions, while Hyrule Field is a central connector for a finite set of strongly authored destinations.
If openness means the number of deliberate ways the world responds to a player’s progress, the answer is less one-sided. Ocarina of Time makes exploration react to equipment, songs, day and night, and the transition between eras. Those systems are visible, legible gates: once you understand what changed, you can make a specific return trip and open a specific possibility.
GTA 6 may ultimately offer more systemic freedom, but the cited official pages do not enumerate its mission structure, activity systems or the conditions under which regions unlock. It would be speculation to claim that every part of Leonida is immediately accessible, or that its sandbox systems will be broader than those of earlier entries. The evidence supports a broad setting and a crime narrative, not a detailed feature checklist.

Progression: puzzle-and-item gates versus a criminal narrative
How Ocarina of Time turns movement into progress
Nintendo explicitly describes dungeons containing puzzles, foes and treasures. That combination gives each major destination a clear function: a dungeon is simultaneously a place to test your understanding, fight through threats and obtain something that changes what the world permits next.
Ocarina songs are another progression layer. Nintendo says songs can “open up new paths forward, turn day to night, and more.” This is unusually direct world interaction. The instrument is not only a musical collectible or a story prop; it is a navigation tool. A player can change the conditions of a place, reveal an opportunity that is unavailable at another time, or access a route that was previously closed.
The two eras reinforce that logic. Link’s journey spans Hyrule in two different periods, so the player is not exploring one static map. Time changes the context of familiar spaces and makes chronology part of the puzzle. The world asks not just “Where should I go?” but also “When should I go, and what can I do there now?”
What is confirmed about GTA 6’s progression
Rockstar confirms the central relationship and premise: Jason and Lucia are caught in a criminal conspiracy that extends across Leonida after an easy score fails. That gives the setting a narrative reason to move between regions and connect local events to a state-wide problem.

They also do not publish a complete list of systems such as property ownership, faction progression or side-activity categories. Those features may be discussed elsewhere by Rockstar in the future, but they should not be treated as confirmed by the material available here.

The practical contrast is therefore clear even without guessing at unannounced mechanics. Ocarina of Time advertises its gates as adventure tools and puzzles. GTA 6 advertises a crime story moving through a broad contemporary setting. One makes the structure of discovery explicit; the other emphasizes the characters, conspiracy and geography.
Traversal and the feeling of moving through the world
Ocarina of Time’s confirmed movement options
Nintendo lists several concrete ways to cover distance: dash, leap over gaps and obstacles, ride a steed and explore at night. These actions make Hyrule Field an active part of play. Crossing the map is not just walking from one loading point to another; movement itself can involve timing a leap, choosing a faster route or deciding whether the conditions of night are useful.
Because the field links distinct destinations, traversal has a clear rhythm. You leave a familiar center, encounter a route problem, reach a themed region, and later return with more knowledge or equipment. The world remains readable while your options expand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the official GTA 6 pages establish
Rockstar confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions and presents Leonida as a multi-region setting. The store material also uses vehicle-oriented edition imagery, but the cited pages do not publish a complete traversal feature list. They do not, for example, provide a definitive catalog of vehicles, movement abilities, transport rules or travel times.
That means it is reasonable to expect movement suited to a contemporary crime sandbox, but not to state specific systems as facts without a directly cited official description. The comparison should stay at the level the evidence supports: Ocarina of Time has named, confirmed adventure movement options, while GTA 6 has a confirmed state-wide geography whose full traversal model remains to be detailed by Rockstar.

Ocarina of Time builds spaces to deliver mythic adventure. Hyrule Field points toward a volcano, lake, desert, towns and other destinations; dungeons concentrate puzzles and treasures; songs and time changes make the kingdom react to Link’s progress. Its geography is an authored machine for discovery. A location is valuable not merely because it is large, but because it introduces a rule, character, obstacle or revelation.
GTA 6 builds around a contemporary criminal drama. Rockstar describes Vice City as the sunny surface of a darker world and follows Jason and Lucia through a conspiracy that spans Leonida. Its world purpose is to give that relationship and criminal escalation room to develop across urban and regional settings. The emphasis is on a lived-in American-inspired state and the pressure of surviving inside it, rather than on fantasy dungeons or mythic chronology.
Neither approach is automatically better. Ocarina of Time can make a modestly sized route memorable because every landmark has authored intent. GTA 6 can make distance meaningful by placing a personal crime story inside a much wider geography. They ask the player to notice different things: Zelda asks what a place is hiding and which ability will reveal it; GTA asks how a pair of criminals navigate a state whose dangers are connected.
What can and cannot be said about scale
No verified comparable figures for map area, NPC count, animal count or activity count appear in the official pages cited for this comparison. That rules out reliable claims such as “GTA 6 is X times larger” or “Ocarina of Time contains Y activities.” Numbers from leaks, fan estimates or unrelated versions would not answer the specific comparison established here.
The defensible scale language is qualitative:
- Ocarina of Time: a compact, dense adventure world organized around Hyrule Field and its themed destinations.
- GTA 6: a broader state-wide sandbox presented through Vice City and regions including the Leonida Keys and Grassrivers.
- Both: official comparable square-mile statistics are not stated in the cited material.
Density and breadth also measure different experiences. A larger map can require longer travel without offering more meaningful decisions per minute. A compact map can feel expansive when changing eras, songs and equipment continually alter what a familiar route means.
Release dates, platforms and current editions
Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo lists a Switch 2 release for 5 November 2026. The product description presents Link’s journey across Hyrule and two eras. Compatible Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo are optional accessories sold separately; Nintendo says they unlock masks. Treat those amiibo as extras, not as a requirement to play the game.
If you are buying specifically for Switch 2, check the Nintendo product listing for your region before ordering. The date above is the release date stated on Nintendo’s listed product page, and regional storefront availability can differ.
Grand Theft Auto VI on current consoles
Rockstar lists GTA 6 for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s store also identifies a physical code-in-box edition with no disc. That distinction matters if you expect a disc for resale, offline installation or collection purposes: confirm the exact package description from the retailer before purchase.
For shoppers searching a retailer, the relevant term is Grand Theft Auto VI PS5 game. Inventory, edition names and delivery dates can vary by country, so verify the local listing rather than assuming that a package described on one regional store is available everywhere.

Which game should you choose?
Choose Ocarina of Time if you want authored discovery
- You prefer a clear adventure structure in which locations, dungeons and treasures have deliberate roles.
- You enjoy returning to familiar places after gaining an item, song or new understanding.
- You want day/night changes and two eras to be part of solving routes and uncovering secrets.
- You value a compact world where a central field connects strongly differentiated regions.
Choose GTA 6 if you want a broad contemporary setting
- You are interested in Jason and Lucia’s criminal story and a conspiracy extending across Leonida.
- You prefer Vice City and surrounding regional geography to a mythic kingdom and dungeon progression.
- You want the version listed for modern consoles: PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You are comfortable waiting for Rockstar to provide more detail about mission gating and traversal systems instead of relying on assumptions.
Choose based on structure, not a size score
Do not treat the phrase “open world” as a single quality scale. Ocarina of Time is not trying to simulate an entire state, and GTA 6 is not being presented as a puzzle-box adventure built around dungeons and time travel. The better question is which form of freedom you want: Zelda’s freedom to revisit, reinterpret and unlock an authored world, or GTA’s promised freedom to move through a wider criminal setting whose full systems have not yet been enumerated.

Ocarina of Time offers a compact, dense adventure world in which Hyrule Field, dungeons, equipment, songs, day/night changes and two eras work together to control discovery. GTA 6 is positioned as the broader geographic sandbox, with Vice City and the state of Leonida providing the stage for Jason and Lucia’s criminal conspiracy. Calling one simply “more open” misses the design difference: GTA 6 wins on confirmed breadth of setting, while Ocarina of Time offers the clearer, more extensively documented structure of authored exploration.
