What changes in the character designs?
The clearest difference in the available side-by-side comparisons is an increase in surface detail. Costumes show more patterning, stitching and texture; equipment and armor receive more definition; and some garments gain visible motifs or decorative elements. The characters remain identifiable, but there is more for the eye to read at close range.

That distinction matters. A redesign can preserve a character’s identity while changing its visual emphasis: a more elaborate outfit may draw attention to rank, craft or readiness for action. Those are reasonable ways to read the details, not confirmed explanations of Nintendo’s design decisions. Nintendo’s announcement confirms a visual overhaul, but it does not give a character-by-character rationale.
Original versus remake: the useful comparison points
Looking at the two versions only as “old graphics” and “new graphics” misses what has actually changed. The more useful question is how the remake presents information. Five comparison points help keep the discussion specific.

- Recognition: Does the character still read immediately from silhouette, hairstyle, colors and signature clothing?
- Materials: Are leather, cloth, metal, embroidery or other surfaces easier to distinguish?
- Construction: Can viewers see seams, stitches, belts, gloves, armor sections or equipment attachments that were previously less prominent?
- Emphasis: Do decorative or symbolic elements attract more attention than they did in the original presentation?
- Context: Does the redesign fit the remake’s broader changes to environments, camera movement, dialogue and music?
Using those axes avoids turning taste into a supposedly objective verdict. A player may prefer the original because its simpler shapes feel cleaner, or prefer the remake because the extra definition makes the characters feel more tangible. Neither response is disproved by the other.
What is visible on each character?
The comparison discussed by Nintendo Life covers Adult Link, Young Link, Young Zelda, Ganondorf, Saria, Darunia, Princess Ruto, Impa, Sheik and Kaepora Gaebora. The specific observations below are visual descriptions, not statements of design intent.

Adult Link
Adult Link’s remake design is a good example of a recognizable silhouette gaining a denser interior. The belt patterning and equipment detail give the eye more information once it moves past the familiar green outfit, cap and sword-and-shield identity. The change does not require viewers to relearn who Link is. Instead, it makes the gear look more constructed: straps, fittings and decorative patterning carry more of the visual burden.
That can alter how the character is read in screenshots or close camera views. In the original, the broad shape may do most of the work. In the remake, the same shape is supported by smaller marks that remain visible when the camera is freely controlled. It is still an interpretation to say that this makes Link look more experienced or battle-ready; the directly supported point is that more of his equipment is visually articulated.
Young Link
Young Link receives more surface and clothing detail rather than a radically different identity. The comparison emphasizes the finish of the outfit, giving the tunic and other clothing elements additional visual texture. This is the kind of change that may be easy to miss in a distant gameplay view but more obvious in a voiced cutscene or a player-controlled camera angle.
Because the redesign remains tied to the familiar child version of Link, the effect is one of refinement rather than replacement. Viewers can compare how much information the remake puts into the fabric and clothing without needing to decide that the character’s personality has changed. A more detailed surface can invite closer inspection, but it cannot independently establish a story purpose.
Young Zelda
Young Zelda’s dress gains embroidery and Triforce motifs. Those additions make decoration and symbolism easier to pick out than a plain or less-defined surface would. The Triforce is already an important visual element in Zelda’s world, so its clearer presence naturally attracts attention. Still, the comparison only establishes that the motifs are visible; it does not establish a new explanation of Zelda’s status, beliefs or role.
Young Zelda also illustrates why a redesign can divide opinion. Added ornament may make the character feel more regal or carefully crafted to one viewer, while another may prefer the restraint of the original. Nintendo Life’s poll results show that preference was not uniform: the remake design received 33% of 1,977 votes in its Young Zelda poll, meaning the original was preferred by a majority of participants in that particular vote. That is a page-specific reaction, not a universal judgment.

Ganondorf
Ganondorf’s added leather and cloth detailing shifts attention from outline to material. Instead of reading the costume as one block of color and shape, viewers can distinguish surfaces that appear to serve different purposes. Leather suggests a different visual texture from cloth, and the contrast can make the outfit feel more physically assembled.
It is reasonable to describe the remake as giving Ganondorf’s costume more material separation. It is not supported to claim that the added leather proves a particular backstory or that the cloth details encode a specific character trait. The evidence is visual: the remake gives viewers more surface distinctions to notice.

Impa’s redesign is described as having more battle-ready armor and a Sheikah-eye detail. Armor changes the emphasis of a costume because it introduces hard protective surfaces and a clearer association with combat readiness. The visible eye emblem adds another focal point, making the Sheikah identity easier to notice within the outfit.
Those features can make Impa’s role appear more martial at a glance, but “appears more martial” is an observation about visual emphasis, not a confirmed statement about Nintendo’s goals. The remake’s added definition helps viewers identify armor and emblem separately from the overall silhouette.
Saria
Saria’s redesign adds a glove detail and changes the treatment of her tunic. These are comparatively small edits, which makes them useful for understanding how redesigns work at different scales. Not every change needs to replace a major costume element. A glove or a differently rendered tunic can affect the impression of the entire outfit when the camera comes closer.
Small details can also be more subjective than large silhouette changes. One viewer may see the glove as a charming finishing touch; another may barely register it. The defensible claim is simply that the remake gives the familiar costume additional points of visual information.

Sheik
Visible stitch lines on Sheik’s clothing make garment construction more apparent. Stitching is not a new silhouette or color block; it is evidence of how the fabric is assembled. That can make the design feel more tactile in a still image, especially when compared directly with a simpler presentation.
As with Ganondorf’s materials, the stitch lines should not be treated as a hidden plot clue without a developer explanation. They change what the viewer can see, not necessarily what the character means.
Darunia, Princess Ruto and Kaepora Gaebora
All three appear in the comparison, but the cited description does not identify a concrete redesign feature for them. Their inclusion confirms that the comparison considers a broad cast, not that every character has a documented alteration of equal size. Without a specified visual observation, the responsible approach is to leave their individual changes open rather than fill the gap with speculation.

How do added details change a character’s visual read?
Costume becomes more than silhouette
At a glance, silhouette and signature clothing help a viewer recognize a character. Fine detail works at a different scale. Belt patterning, visible stitches, armor surfaces and garment decoration reward a closer look without necessarily replacing the broad visual cues that make the character familiar. Adult Link’s equipment is a useful example: the comparison draws attention to increased detail on gear, not to a new identity for the character.

Ganondorf’s leather and cloth detailing makes the distinction between materials more apparent; Sheik’s stitch lines make clothing construction visible. These choices can make an outfit feel more tangible to the viewer. That is an effect of what is shown, not evidence that Nintendo has declared a particular story meaning for the materials.
Decoration can direct attention
Young Zelda’s embroidery and Triforce motifs give the dress more visual information, while the Sheikah-eye detail on Impa’s armor makes that element easier to notice. Saria’s glove and the altered treatment of her tunic offer smaller changes that affect how the outfit is read. It is fair to say these features make decoration or equipment more prominent; it is not fair to claim, without a developer explanation, that they were added to communicate a specific personality trait or plot point.
Detail can change the balance between distance and close-up views
The original’s simpler presentation can be highly effective at a glance because large shapes remain legible. The remake’s added information has more payoff when a character is shown close up, in a cutscene or from a freely adjusted camera angle. That does not mean every detail will be equally visible during ordinary play. It means the remake creates more opportunities for viewers to notice details when framing, lighting and distance allow it.
Nintendo says the remake includes remodeled locations and freely controlled camera movement. Those features provide more ways to look at a character, but the available material does not establish how every outfit behaves in motion or under every lighting condition. Static comparisons can show what details exist; they cannot fully predict how conspicuous those details will be during play.

How do the redesigns fit the wider remake?
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 release as a broad presentation and control overhaul, not a set of isolated character edits. Its official announcement lists completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes with expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, and reworked camera and movement controls. It also describes freely controlled camera movement in remodeled locations and a day/night cycle that continues in towns.
That context affects how the character designs land. More clothing detail is part of a remake that is also changing how scenes sound, how characters speak, and how players view and move through locations. A costume with visible stitches may be easier to appreciate in a close, voiced scene than in a fast traversal segment. Likewise, a more defined emblem may stand out differently when the camera can be repositioned instead of remaining on a fixed angle.
Game Informer’s September 8, 2026 report on the presentation described player-triggered jumping, full camera control, faster swimming and voiced cutscenes. Those are reports about what the presentation showed, not hands-on test results. They help describe the wider remake, but do not provide a developer explanation for any particular costume change.
The wider overhaul also means that comparing one character in isolation can be misleading. If environments, lighting, animation presentation, music and dialogue all receive updates, the character models are being viewed inside a new audiovisual frame. The remake’s designs may therefore feel more or less successful depending on how well they sit beside remodeled locations and the new presentation style. The available comparisons document the character art, but they do not establish a complete evaluation of the game’s final visual consistency.

Which designs have readers preferred?
Nintendo Life’s 2026 page polls offer a limited snapshot of reader preferences. The remake design received 59% of 1,817 votes in the Adult Link poll, 52% of 1,948 votes in the Young Link poll, and 33% of 1,977 votes in the Young Zelda poll.
These figures describe self-selected visitors who voted on those specific pages. They are not a representative survey of Zelda fans, and they measure preference rather than why voters liked or disliked a design. The different results also show why a single claim that readers broadly prefer either the remake or original look would overstate what these polls establish.
Adult Link’s result indicates that the remake led among those poll participants, while Young Link’s result was closer to an even split. Young Zelda’s result favored the original design among that page’s voters. The figures cannot tell us whether respondents cared most about color, embroidery, nostalgia, proportions, simplicity or another factor, because the polls reported a choice rather than a detailed explanation.
Does more detail automatically mean a better design?
No. More detail changes the amount of visual information; it does not create an objective ranking. A design can be more elaborate and still feel less appealing to someone who values the original’s clarity. Conversely, a viewer who wants materials, stitching and symbols to read clearly may see the remake’s added definition as an improvement.
The comparison supports a precise conclusion: the remake places more emphasis on costume craftsmanship, materials and small accessories. They do not establish an objective winner, and appearance alone cannot tell us whether every player will prefer the original or remake version. Nor do the cited sources include a named developer’s explanation of the redesigns. Nintendo’s broad description of the visual overhaul is not a specific account of why, for example, Impa’s armor or Young Zelda’s dress changed.
No directly relevant, verified statement from a named developer explains the individual redesigns. Nintendo’s official wording says the game is “Remade with completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, reworked camera and movement controls, and more.” That sentence describes the project’s scope; it is not a character-by-character design rationale.
The most defensible conclusion is that the remake makes costume craftsmanship and small visual features more noticeable while retaining recognizable character identities. Whether those changes improve a favorite design is a matter of taste; what they visibly emphasize is a more detailed presentation of clothing, equipment and materials.
Questions to ask when comparing screenshots
- Can I still identify the character from the silhouette and signature colors before looking at the small details?
- Which elements are genuinely new or more clearly rendered: patterning, stitching, armor, embroidery, motifs or accessories?
- Does the change affect the whole costume, or is it a localized adjustment such as Saria’s glove or Sheik’s stitch lines?
- Am I describing what is visible, or am I assigning an intention that has not been stated?
- Would the difference remain noticeable in motion, at gameplay distance or only in a close-up comparison?
- How does the design sit alongside remodeled environments, voiced scenes and the remake’s freely controlled camera?
These questions keep a comparison grounded. They also explain why two viewers can agree about what changed and still disagree about whether the result is preferable.

Release context
Nintendo has announced The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, with a scheduled launch date of November 5, 2026. The announcement also lists playable and electric ocarinas that can interact with the game, two amiibo figures, and a LEGO Link & Epona collectible. Those are separate announced items; their inclusion does not clarify the artistic rationale behind the character redesigns.
Because the release is scheduled for a future date, final retail details and accessory availability should be checked against Nintendo’s current listings.
