Ocarina of Time Remake vs. Other Zelda Games on Nintendo Switch

Short answer: Nintendo’s rebuilt The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is coming on November 5, 2026, and Nintendo lists it as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. It is not an announced game for the original Nintendo Switch. If you own the original Switch, you can play the Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, subject to the current catalog and membership rules. The Switch already has released alternatives in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, while the rebuilt Ocarina of Time is a separate, full-price-style game purchase with physical and digital editions announced but not yet launched at the October 13, 2026 information date.

The answer depends on which Switch you own

Nintendo uses “Nintendo Switch” and “Nintendo Switch 2” as separate platforms for this announcement. The rebuilt Ocarina of Time is described as built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2 and marked exclusive to that system. A player with the 2017-era Nintendo Switch should not assume that the upcoming rebuild will run on their console.

There are two different ways to play an Ocarina of Time game on Nintendo hardware:

  • Original Nintendo Switch: the Nintendo 64 version is available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack classic-game catalog, where the title remains included under the applicable service terms.
  • Nintendo Switch 2: the rebuilt game is scheduled for November 5, 2026, with physical and digital editions announced by Nintendo.

Those options are not two editions of the same product. The classic catalog release is the Nintendo 64 original; the Switch 2 product is a new rebuild with modernized presentation and controls.

What Nintendo announced for the Switch 2 rebuild

Release date and platform

Nintendo’s product listing gives the rebuilt The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time a release date of November 5, 2026. The listing identifies it as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. As of October 13, 2026, that date was still in the future, so the game should be described as upcoming rather than available.

Nintendo also says the game is “built from the ground up” for Nintendo Switch 2. That wording distinguishes this release from simply placing the Nintendo 64 software in a higher-resolution emulator. It does not, by itself, establish how every scene, system, dungeon, control option or performance mode works.

Features Nintendo has confirmed

The official description lists several changes:

  • Overhauled visuals
  • Voiced cutscenes
  • Expanded dialogue
  • Symphonic orchestral music
  • Updated controls
  • Updated camera movement

These are Nintendo’s product-description claims. They are not independent measurements or hands-on review findings. No published frame-rate test, loading-time test, control-latency test or comparative play session establishes how the rebuild performs against the other Zelda games.

Nintendo’s listing frames the story as Link becoming the Hero of Time and saving the kingdom in a classic tale. Nintendo’s separate description of the original calls it Link’s first 3D adventure for the Nintendo 64 system. The remake announcement therefore combines a familiar game and story with a rebuilt audiovisual and control presentation, but the available information does not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison with the 1998 release.

Physical and digital editions

Nintendo lists both physical and digital editions for the Switch 2 release. At the October 13, 2026 information date, launch stock, final retailer pages and regional pricing were not established. Check the Nintendo listing and the retailer’s current product page before buying, especially if a preorder page does not yet show a final specification.

The listing also notes that some game information may not be final at preorder time. Treat the announced date and platform as the key confirmed facts, and recheck the edition, packaging, download requirements and price for your country before publication or purchase.

How to play the original Ocarina of Time on the original Switch

Expansion Pack access

Nintendo’s October 16, 2024 service announcement places the Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time in the “Only on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack” section. That gives original-Switch owners a current route to the classic game without waiting for the Switch 2 rebuild.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is catalog access tied to the Expansion Pack tier, not ownership of the upcoming Switch 2 software. You need an active membership that includes the Nintendo 64 catalog, and Nintendo can change catalog availability or service terms. The exact access rules and catalog list should be checked for your region at the time you play.

Practical steps

  1. Confirm that your Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
  2. Open the Nintendo Switch Online software on the original Switch and select the Nintendo 64 catalog, or search the eShop for the Nintendo 64 application associated with your membership.
  3. Install or open the catalog application and look for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  4. Start the game from the catalog application. If the title is not listed, verify your account tier, country or region, and Nintendo’s current catalog page rather than assuming the Switch 2 rebuild has replaced it.

The service route is especially useful if you want to experience the original presentation, or if you own an original Switch and do not plan to buy a new console. It does not provide the announced visual overhaul, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral score or updated camera promised for the Switch 2 game.

How the main Zelda choices compare

The most useful comparison is not “which game is objectively best.” Nintendo’s official pages establish different platforms, release states and design descriptions, but they do not provide independent testing that ranks them. Choose according to whether you want the original 3D adventure, a rebuilt version of that adventure, or a modern open-world Zelda already released for Switch.

Breath of the Wild: the modern starting point

Nintendo identifies Breath of the Wild as a Nintendo Switch game and highlights exploration of Hyrule. It is therefore the straightforward choice for someone who owns the original Switch and wants a current, released Zelda built for that platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a remake of Ocarina of Time, and Nintendo’s product description does not establish that it reproduces the older game’s structure, dungeons, camera or story. Its value in this comparison is availability and its modern approach to exploring Hyrule. If your priority is playing immediately on the hardware you already own, it avoids both the Expansion Pack requirement and the wait for November 2026.

On Switch 2, Nintendo has also described an upgrade-pack route for qualifying Expansion Pack members. The upgrade-pack terms are separate from the upcoming Ocarina of Time rebuild: they apply to the respective base game, can be used only on Switch 2, and qualifying members can access them at no additional cost while membership remains active. The base game is required, and the conditions cited here are Nintendo UK’s published terms; verify the rules in your own region.

Tears of the Kingdom: the direct sequel choice

Nintendo calls Tears of the Kingdom a Nintendo Switch game and a sequel to Breath of the Wild. Its listed release date is May 12, 2023. The official description expands the setting beyond Hyrule’s surface to include floating islands and highlights abilities named Ultrahand and Fuse.

That makes it the relevant choice when you want a released game that follows Breath of the Wild and adds a larger land-and-sky setting with construction-oriented systems. It is not presented by Nintendo as a continuation or remake of Ocarina of Time. A player choosing it instead of the rebuild is choosing a newer sequel and its own systems, not a modernized version of the Nintendo 64 adventure.

As with Breath of the Wild, Nintendo’s page supports platform, release and feature-description facts but not a measured claim that it is more similar to Ocarina of Time, runs at a particular frame rate, or offers a better experience.

Choosing before November 5, 2026

If you own only the original Switch

Start with the Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you specifically want Ocarina of Time. If you want a modern released game instead, choose between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom based on whether you want the series’ modern exploration starting point or its sequel with land-and-sky exploration and Ultrahand and Fuse.

If you already own or plan to buy Switch 2

You can play the classic catalog version where your membership and regional catalog allow it, then decide whether the announced rebuild’s new presentation justifies a separate purchase. The rebuild is not a free visual patch described for the classic catalog game; Nintendo lists it as its own Switch 2 product with physical and digital editions.

If your priority is the remake’s new presentation

Wait for the November 5, 2026 launch and confirm the final listing. The features Nintendo has announced are the overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, updated controls and updated camera movement. No independent evidence in the available information confirms additional gameplay changes, performance modes or a particular control layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your priority is playing today

The rebuilt game is not the immediate option before its announced launch. Use the Expansion Pack catalog for the Nintendo 64 original, or buy one of the released Nintendo Switch games. Keeping those routes separate prevents an Expansion Pack subscription from being mistaken for a preorder or license for the Switch 2 rebuild.

Format, membership and cost questions

Nintendo had not established a current retail price in the information available for this article. Do not infer the price of the rebuild from the cost of another Zelda game, a retailer search result or an Expansion Pack membership. The new title is a separately purchased game, while the Nintendo 64 original is accessed through a recurring service tier.

Question What is established What must be checked
Is the rebuild a separate purchase? Yes. Nintendo lists physical and digital editions for Switch 2. Final regional price, retailer stock, packaging and any download requirement
Does Expansion Pack include the rebuild? No such inclusion is stated. Expansion Pack access described by Nintendo concerns the Nintendo 64 catalog. Current membership and catalog terms in your region
Can the original Switch run the rebuild? Nintendo marks the rebuilt game exclusive to Switch 2. Nothing in the announcement establishes an original-Switch version
Are upgrade packs the same as the rebuild? No. Nintendo UK describes Switch 2 upgrade packs for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, requiring their respective base games. Regional eligibility and current membership rules

What is not yet known about the rebuild

A careful comparison should stop where Nintendo’s information stops. The announcement does not establish:

  • A final price for any region
  • Retail stock or preorder availability
  • Regional release variations
  • Frame-rate or resolution measurements
  • Loading times
  • Battery-life impact
  • Detailed control mappings
  • Whether every original gameplay system has changed
  • Review consensus or comparative hands-on results

Those omissions matter when deciding whether to preorder. Nintendo’s product page itself cautions that some information may not be final at preorder time. A retailer page can also show an incorrect platform or an outdated date, so confirm that the listing explicitly says Nintendo Switch 2 and matches the announced November 5, 2026 release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple decision checklist

  • Check your console: original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 are different answers for this title.
  • Decide whether you need the game now: the Nintendo 64 version is the immediate Ocarina of Time route; the rebuild is scheduled for November 5, 2026.
  • Choose your format: Expansion Pack catalog access is membership-based; the rebuild has announced physical and digital editions.
  • Choose your style of Zelda: the classic catalog version, Nintendo’s rebuilt presentation, Breath of the Wild’s modern Hyrule exploration, or Tears of the Kingdom’s sequel setting with floating islands, Ultrahand and Fuse.
  • Verify current details: check your region’s Nintendo service page and the final Switch 2 product listing for price, stock, catalog status and edition information.

Bottom line for each type of player

Original Switch owner who wants Ocarina now

Use Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to access the Nintendo 64 version, provided the title is in your region’s current catalog and your membership includes the required tier.

Switch 2 owner who wants the rebuilt edition

The relevant product is the Switch 2-exclusive release announced for November 5, 2026. Its announced improvements concern visuals, presentation, music, dialogue, controls and camera movement; final price and launch details still require confirmation.

Player who wants a Zelda game available immediately

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are released Nintendo Switch games. Choose the former as the modern exploration entry point, or the latter if you specifically want its sequel relationship, floating-island setting and Ultrahand and Fuse abilities.

Player comparing value

Do not treat a subscription catalog title, a separately purchased Switch 2 rebuild and a base game with an optional Switch 2 upgrade pack as equivalent purchases. Their access rules, hardware requirements and update paths are different.
