Ocarina of Time Remake vs. Original: What Changes and Which Version Should You Play?

There are three different games behind the phrase “Ocarina of Time remake.” The 1998 Nintendo 64 original is available now on Switch and Switch 2 through Nintendo 64 Classics with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Ocarina of Time 3D is the 2011 Nintendo 3DS remake, with a rebuilt presentation, touch controls, glasses-free 3D and gyro aiming. A much more ambitious Switch 2 remake is scheduled for November 5, 2026, but it had not released as of October 17, 2026.

If you want to play immediately on current Nintendo hardware, choose the N64 version. If you already own a 3DS and the 3DS game, that edition remains a distinct handheld remake. If you want the newly announced visuals, voiced scenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music and modernized controls, wait for the Switch 2 release; its playability and quality cannot be judged responsibly until the finished game is available.

The three versions people mean by “Ocarina of Time remake”

Comparisons often mix together two separate remakes. Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS on June 17, 2011. It rebuilt the Nintendo 64 game for a handheld, added a glasses-free 3D display mode and adapted the interface for touch and Circle Pad controls.

Nintendo has now announced a separate Switch 2 version. Nintendo describes it as built from the ground up, with a substantial audiovisual overhaul and new interaction features. Its announced release date is November 5, 2026. This is not the 3DS game ported to a newer console, and it is not yet possible to make a hands-on judgment about its performance, pacing or whether every change improves the original.

  • Solve puzzles, travel through time and explore the immersive world
  • The graphical upgrades and three-dimensional depth breathe new life into the expansive world of Hyrule New controls using the Nintendo 3DS & Nintendo 2DS system's technologies
  • Switching items has never been simpler or quicker, with a touch-based inventory system Compatible with all consoles in the 3DS family

The 1998 Nintendo 64 original

The original introduced the series’ first fully 3D adventure and its 3D combat system. It follows Link through Hyrule, including two time periods, familiar characters, dungeons, puzzles and songs played on the ocarina. On modern hardware, Nintendo lists it in the Nintendo 64 Classics catalog rather than as a separately purchased digital game.

Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS

The 3DS edition keeps the underlying adventure while changing how it looks and feels on a handheld. Nintendo documents a complete graphical overhaul, glasses-free stereoscopic 3D, Circle Pad analogue movement, a touch-screen inventory and gyro-controlled first-person aiming. It is a 2011 remake, not the upcoming Switch 2 project.

The announced Switch 2 remake

The Switch 2 listing presents a new version of the classic story. Confirmed announcements include overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded or new dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, jump and dash actions, modern camera movements and several optional companion features. Nintendo has not established that the story structure or dungeon order has been rewritten, nor that every original mechanic is preserved exactly.

At-a-glance comparison

Version Presentation and features How you can access it Main trade-off
Nintendo 64 original (1998) Original 3D visuals, original combat and interface, classic soundtrack and controls. Nintendo 64 Classics on Switch and Switch 2 with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. It is the least modern presentation, but it is the version available now without locating legacy hardware or a used copy.
Ocarina of Time 3D (2011) Complete graphical overhaul, glasses-free 3D, Circle Pad movement, touch inventory and gyro aiming. Nintendo 3DS physical copies or previously purchased digital copies on compatible 3DS hardware. New purchases through the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended on March 27, 2023.
Switch 2 remake (November 5, 2026) Announced overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, new movement and camera features, and companion-app functions. Requires Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo lists physical and digital editions. It was unreleased on October 17, 2026, so real-world performance and the effect of its changes remain unknown.

What Nintendo has announced for the Switch 2 remake

The following points come from Nintendo’s product descriptions. They describe announced features, not observations from playing a finished release.

A rebuilt visual presentation

Nintendo says the game has “completely overhauled visuals” and is “built from the ground up” for Switch 2. That wording indicates a new presentation rather than a simple resolution increase for the Nintendo 64 program. The announcement does not specify final resolution, frame rate, graphics modes or performance in every area, so those details should not be assumed.

Voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue

The remake adds voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue. Nintendo’s UK description also refers to new dialogue. This changes how story scenes are delivered compared with the largely text-based original. The announcement does not say that the complete narrative has been replaced or that every line will be voiced during ordinary exploration.

Symphonic orchestral music

Nintendo advertises symphonic orchestral music, replacing the original’s game-console sound presentation with a fuller orchestral treatment. The listing does not establish whether every musical cue has been newly recorded, whether the original score remains selectable, or how the soundtrack changes across all dungeons and locations.

Jumping, dashing and modern camera movement

The Switch 2 description announces jump and dash actions, enhanced controls and modern camera movements. These are meaningful changes to the way Link moves through Hyrule and how the player views the environment. Nintendo has not published a complete control map, so it is too early to state which buttons trigger each action, whether jumping is context-sensitive, or how these abilities affect every puzzle and combat encounter.

New ways to play ocarina songs

Nintendo UK says players can hum or sing ocarina melodies into a microphone as well as use button input. That gives the instrument a new optional input method. The announcement does not state whether microphone recognition is required, how accurately it must detect a melody, or whether every song can be played this way.

Time passing during exploration

The UK listing says time passes wherever the player explores. This is a broad change from the way time and location are represented in the original description. Nintendo has not published a detailed schedule of what changes with time, how quickly it passes, or whether it alters every region, quest and enemy encounter.

Threads of Time

The Switch 2 version adds a “Threads of Time” recap and objectives feature. It is intended to help players track the story and current goals. Nintendo has not shown the complete interface or explained whether it can be disabled, how much it reveals, or whether it changes puzzle solutions. Treat it as a guidance system rather than evidence that the adventure has become a different story.

ZELDA NOTES in the Nintendo Switch App

Nintendo says ZELDA NOTES will show daily accomplishments, provide image-based location challenges and let players play ocarina melodies on a smart device. Nintendo UK states that using the feature does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. It is an optional companion service, not a condition for starting or finishing the game.

Amiibo extras

Compatible Zelda amiibo figures provide optional in-game extras. Nintendo’s US listing says Young Link and Young Zelda figures planned for 2027 unlock masks with a retro graphical style. Those figures are not required to access the main adventure, and the 2027 timing means they are separate from the November 2026 game release.

What changes in Ocarina of Time 3D

The 3DS remake is the established alternative if you already have the older handheld hardware. Nintendo’s documented changes are concentrated on presentation and interface rather than a newly announced feature set like the Switch 2 project.

Graphics and stereoscopic 3D

Nintendo describes a complete graphical overhaul for the 3DS edition. Its glasses-free 3D effect gives depth to characters and environments without requiring separate glasses. The feature depends on compatible 3DS hardware and the player’s comfort with stereoscopic viewing; it can be adjusted or left unused.

Circle Pad movement

The Circle Pad provides analogue movement in place of the Nintendo 64 controller’s original arrangement. This makes directional movement more continuous and suits the handheld form factor. It does not turn the 3DS edition into the upcoming Switch 2 control scheme; the two remakes should be treated as separate redesigns.

Touch inventory and interface

The lower touchscreen handles inventory functions, giving quicker access to equipment and items than the original menu process. Nintendo specifically documents touch-based inventory, but that should not be read as a promise that every menu or puzzle uses touch input.

Gyro aiming

First-person shooting can use the 3DS gyroscope. Tilting the system adjusts aim, an option that does not exist in the Nintendo 64 version. Players who prefer traditional buttons can use the standard controls instead.

Availability today

Nintendo says new purchases on the Nintendo 3DS eShop were no longer possible after March 27, 2023. In practice, a new player generally needs compatible 3DS hardware plus a physical copy, or a digital copy purchased before the store closure that remains associated with the relevant account. Used hardware and cartridges are secondhand purchases, so check condition and compatibility before paying.

How to play the original now on Switch or Switch 2

Nintendo’s current route for the Nintendo 64 game is the Nintendo 64 Classics catalog. The game is included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, an ongoing subscription rather than an individual purchase through that service.

  1. Use a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 connected to the Nintendo Account that holds an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
  2. Open the Nintendo 64 Classics application from the console’s available Nintendo Classics software.
  3. Find The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the catalog and launch it.
  4. For offline use, connect the console online periodically so Nintendo can verify the active membership. Nintendo’s service guidance says offline access is not permanently validated; periodic online verification is required.

A wireless Nintendo 64 controller is an optional accessory listed by Nintendo Australia for members. It can provide a more period-authentic control layout, but it is not required; the standard Switch controllers also provide access to the game.

Which version should you play?

There is no honest pre-release ranking of the Switch 2 remake against the older editions. The practical choice depends on the hardware you own, whether you want to play now and which type of change matters most to you.

Choose the Nintendo 64 original if you want to play immediately

This is the clearest choice for someone with a Switch or Switch 2 who does not own a 3DS. The game is available through Nintendo 64 Classics with the Expansion Pack membership, and you do not need to find a discontinued eShop listing or secondhand cartridge. You also experience the adventure in its original 3D form, which is useful if you want to understand the design as it first appeared.

Choose Ocarina of Time 3D if you already have the right 3DS setup

The 3DS version makes sense for an owner of compatible 3DS hardware who already has the game or can obtain a legitimate physical copy. Its documented advantages are the rebuilt graphics, stereoscopic display, touchscreen inventory, Circle Pad movement and gyro aiming. Because new eShop purchases ended in 2023, it is not the straightforward digital-buy option for newcomers.

Wait for the Switch 2 remake if presentation and modern controls are your priority

The upcoming version is the one to consider if you specifically want the announced visual overhaul, voiced scenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, jump and dash actions, modern camera movement, microphone-enabled ocarina input and Threads of Time guidance. You need a Switch 2, and the release date is November 5, 2026. Until the game is released and independently evaluated, choose it for its confirmed feature set rather than an unproven claim that it is the definitive edition.

Use a two-version approach if you want historical context

Playing the N64 edition first and then trying a remake can show exactly how presentation and interface decisions changed. That is a personal way to study the differences, not a claim that one version is universally superior. The Switch 2 remake’s final behavior will determine how meaningful its announced additions are in practice.

What is still unknown about the Switch 2 version

Nintendo’s announcements answer what is being added, but they do not answer every question a comparison shopper may have. As of October 17, 2026, the following points should remain qualified:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Final frame-rate and resolution targets have not been stated in the supplied product descriptions.
  • Nintendo has not published a complete list of altered dungeons, puzzles, enemy behaviors or quest steps.
  • The announcements do not confirm whether the original soundtrack can be selected alongside the orchestral arrangements.
  • The exact operation of jump, dash, modern camera controls and microphone recognition has not been fully documented.
  • There is no released performance testing or independent play evaluation from which to rank the remake against the N64 and 3DS versions.
  • Nintendo has not said that the story sequence has been rewritten; describe the game as a new version of the classic story, not as a confirmed narrative reboot.

Dates and platform facts at a glance

Date What it means
1998 The Nintendo 64 original established the 3D adventure and combat format being revisited by both later editions.
June 17, 2011 Nintendo’s listed European release date for Ocarina of Time 3D.
March 27, 2023 After this date, Nintendo says new Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop purchases were no longer possible.
November 5, 2026 Nintendo’s announced release date for the Switch 2 remake.
2027 Nintendo’s US listing currently places the planned Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo that unlock retro-style masks.

Bottom-line decision

Play the Nintendo 64 original now if you need an accessible version on Switch or Switch 2. Play Ocarina of Time 3D if you already own compatible 3DS hardware and want its documented handheld upgrades. Choose the Switch 2 remake for its announced new presentation and controls once it releases on November 5, 2026, but wait for post-release evaluation before declaring it better than either earlier version.
