The Switch 2 remake is scheduled for November 5, 2026. As of October 17, 2026, Nintendo has announced both formats but the game has not released, so cartridge contents, required downloads, final retailer prices, stock and measured performance are not yet established.

Your first decision is the version, then the delivery format. The physical and digital Switch 2 listings describe the same announced remake. The Nintendo 64 catalog and the Nintendo 3DS release are separate editions with different features and access rules.

| Switch 2 physical | The announced Switch 2 remake on a physical game card; Nintendo lists release for November 5, 2026. | One-time game purchase, with cartridge contents and any download requirement still unverified. | Players who want a tangible copy and physical collection. |
| Switch 2 digital | The same announced remake and features as the physical listing; Nintendo estimates a 27 GB download. | One-time Nintendo eShop purchase tied to your account and console storage. | Players who prefer immediate downloading and do not need a boxed copy. |
| Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics | The original Nintendo 64 version in Nintendo’s classic-games catalog. | Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; Nintendo says it has no plans to sell catalog games outside the service. | Players who want the original game and are comfortable with continuing membership access. |
| Ocarina of Time 3D | A separate Nintendo 3DS-family edition with refined gameplay, overhauled 3D visuals, touch inventory and motion controls. | Uses Nintendo 3DS-family hardware and is not the Switch 2 remake. | Owners of compatible 3DS hardware who specifically want that version. |
Before comparing prices, confirm that you own the required system. A Switch 2 purchase does not give you the Nintendo 64 catalog version, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership does not provide the newly announced remake.

What the Switch 2 remake includes
Nintendo describes the new game as “built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system.” Its physical and digital product pages present the same announced feature set: overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls and modern camera movements. Those are Nintendo’s product claims, not independent hands-on findings; the game is still awaiting its announced release date.
Nintendo also lists single-system, one-player play and handheld, TV and tabletop modes. The product information mentions ZELDA NOTES, a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App for compatible smart devices, and says Zelda-series amiibo can provide in-game extras. The listing does not establish that every accessory or smart-device feature is required for the main game.
Physical Switch 2 edition
Nintendo’s physical page identifies the platform, publisher, November 5, 2026 release date and a retailer-finding option. A physical purchase is the natural choice if you like a case and game card in your collection, want to lend a copy in the ordinary way physical games allow, or simply prefer buying a boxed product.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that the game card is guaranteed to contain the complete game or that it will play entirely offline. The official page reviewed does not specify the exact cartridge contents, a mandatory download, patch requirements or offline behavior. Those details should be checked in the final packaging and current support information after Nintendo publishes them.
Retail availability is also not guaranteed by the product page. Before ordering, verify the exact Switch 2 SKU, your region, the seller, release timing, local price and whether the listing is actually in stock. A retailer listing can change independently of Nintendo’s announcement.
Digital Switch 2 edition
Nintendo’s digital listing gives an estimated download size of 27 GB. Treat that as the game-file estimate, not the amount of free space you should leave on the console: system software, updates, save data and other installed games also use storage. Check the console’s available space before buying, and allow additional headroom rather than planning around exactly 27 GB.
The digital page lists the same supported handheld, TV and tabletop modes and the same announced remake features. Digital access is convenient when you want to switch games without changing cards and when you are comfortable managing downloads through your Nintendo account. It is less suitable if you are trying to minimize storage use or want a boxed copy.

Physical versus digital: the decision factors that actually matter
1. Collection and ownership preference
Physical is the straightforward answer for a collector. You receive a tangible game product rather than a download, and the copy can be stored with the rest of your game library. That preference is personal; the available information does not establish future resale value, scarcity, special packaging or long-term price performance.
Digital is better for a library centered on downloads. The game is associated with your Nintendo account and can be launched without swapping a card. Account access, console settings and Nintendo’s service policies therefore matter more than they do when you keep a physical card.
2. Storage and installation
Digital buyers need enough internal or compatible expanded storage for Nintendo’s estimated 27 GB file plus system overhead and updates. If your console is nearly full, clear space or confirm supported storage expansion before purchase. Physical buyers avoid planning for the initial 27 GB download, but the official product information does not say whether a card will require additional data, an update or an internet connection.
Because the cartridge details are not published, storage alone cannot prove that physical is completely offline or that digital is the only format requiring downloads. Wait for the final packaging and support guidance if that distinction is decisive for you.
3. Convenience in everyday play
A digital copy is always available on the console where it is installed. That can be useful when several games are in regular rotation or when you play mainly in handheld mode. A physical copy requires the card to be present, but it does not consume the same amount of console storage for the initial game data and gives you a physical object to organize.
Neither listing provides a measured loading-time comparison, frame-rate result or image-quality test between formats. Do not choose one expecting a performance advantage that Nintendo has not documented.
4. Price and actual availability
Nintendo’s official pages reviewed for this guide do not provide a verified same-day comparison of the physical and digital prices, and they do not establish current retailer stock. Prices may differ by country, retailer and promotion. Compare the final local eShop price with an authorized retailer’s exact Switch 2 SKU on or near November 5, 2026, rather than relying on an old listing or an unconfirmed preorder.

Also compare like with like. A physical copy and a digital copy are both one-time game purchases, while Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is an access subscription measured over a particular period. Treating one year of membership as though it were the permanent price of a game produces a misleading calculation.
Rank #3
The Nintendo 64 subscription route
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is a way to play the original Nintendo 64 edition through Nintendo’s classics catalog. Nintendo Support says an active membership is required and states: “There are no plans to make the games available outside of the Nintendo Switch Online service.” That statement applies to the classic-games catalog, not to the new Switch 2 remake.
In practical terms, this route is attractive when your priority is the original N64 experience and you already maintain the required membership for other catalog benefits. It is not a one-time digital purchase of Ocarina of Time. If the membership ends, access to the catalog depends on renewing the service under Nintendo’s rules.
US membership price context
Nintendo’s US support page listed the following prices for a 12-month term when checked on October 13, 2026:
| Plan | US price listed | Term | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | $49.99 | 12 months | US support-page price; country and duration affect pricing. |
| Family Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | $79.99 | 12 months | US support-page price for the family plan; eligibility and account arrangements apply. |
Recheck Nintendo’s current page and your local Nintendo account before buying. A yearly membership can be good value if you use its broader benefits, but it is a different proposition from owning either Switch 2 edition. The cited prices do not establish what the remake will cost.
Where Ocarina of Time 3D fits
Ocarina of Time 3D is a Nintendo 3DS-family release, not a physical or digital format of the Switch 2 remake and not the same software as the N64 catalog entry. Nintendo’s UK page describes refined gameplay, overhauled 3D visuals, a touch-based inventory and motion controls.
Choose this edition only if you have compatible Nintendo 3DS-family hardware and specifically want those system-tailored features. The cited UK page does not prove current availability in every region, so check your country’s official store or support pages. Do not assume that a 3DS purchase transfers to Switch 2 or that a Switch Online membership supplies the 3DS edition.
How to choose your edition
- Identify the console you will use. If you do not own a Nintendo Switch 2, the announced remake is not an immediate option. Nintendo 64 catalog access requires a compatible Nintendo Switch system and an active Expansion Pack membership; Ocarina of Time 3D requires Nintendo 3DS-family hardware.
- Decide whether you want the remake or the original. The Switch 2 product is the newly announced remake with Nintendo-described visual, audio, dialogue, control and camera changes. The subscription route is the original Nintendo 64 game. Do not select the membership simply because you want the remake.
- Choose physical or digital for the Switch 2 remake. Select physical if a boxed copy matters to you. Select digital if downloading and account-based access are more convenient and you can accommodate the estimated 27 GB file plus additional space.
- Check the final local offer. Confirm the retailer or Nintendo eShop price, region, release date, SKU and stock. For physical, look for any published cartridge or download requirement. For digital, verify available storage and the final download information.
- Account for how long you expect to play. A Switch 2 edition is a one-time game purchase. The N64 route remains tied to membership, so include renewal costs and your likelihood of using the other Expansion Pack benefits.
Practical buying checklist
On release week, open Nintendo’s physical and digital listings side by side and confirm that both still identify the same platform, publisher, modes and feature description. For a boxed copy, match the retailer’s product number to the Switch 2 version rather than an older Switch, Nintendo 64 or 3DS listing. Check the seller’s delivery date, return terms and regional compatibility, especially if several versions appear in search results.

- Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
If you are choosing the subscription route, confirm that your Nintendo Switch Online plan is specifically the Expansion Pack tier, not the standard membership. Check the renewal date and local price, and consider whether you will use the other catalog benefits. The classic-game access is ongoing only while the membership remains active under Nintendo’s service rules.
Cost scenarios without false precision
The available US figures allow a clear subscription reference point but not a fair total-cost ranking against the remake. An individual Expansion Pack plan was listed at $49.99 for 12 months and a family plan at $79.99 for 12 months on October 13, 2026. Two years of individual service would total $99.98 at that listed rate, before any price change; that is still the cost of service access, not ownership of the remake.
For the Switch 2 editions, wait for the local Nintendo eShop price and an authorized retailer’s current physical price. Compare any discount, delivery charge, tax and storage purchase separately. A temporary sale can change the short-term winner, while a subscription may make sense for someone already paying for Expansion Pack features. State the time period whenever you compare totals.
What is still unknown before release
Several details cannot responsibly be answered from Nintendo’s announced pages yet:
- The final comparative prices for physical and digital Switch 2 editions in each market.
- Retailer stock, preorder allocation and whether any special packaging will be available.
- The exact data on the physical game card.
- Whether the card requires a download, patch or internet check, and how much storage that would use.
- Measured loading times, frame rates, resolution or image-quality differences between formats.
- The final size of updates and the amount of free storage the complete installation will need.
These are not reasons to avoid either format; they are reasons to avoid treating assumptions as specifications. Recheck Nintendo’s final product and support pages, plus the retailer listing you intend to use, when the release approaches.
Bottom line for each type of buyer
- Buy physical when the tangible game card and collection value are central to your decision, and you are willing to verify the final cartridge and retailer details.
- Buy digital when you want the announced Switch 2 remake without changing cards, have adequate storage beyond Nintendo’s 27 GB estimate and prefer account-based downloads.
- Use Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack when you want the original Nintendo 64 version and accept that access depends on an active membership rather than a standalone purchase.
- Choose Ocarina of Time 3D only when the Nintendo 3DS-family edition and its touch and motion features are specifically what you want.
For most Switch 2 owners, the physical-versus-digital choice is therefore about how you manage games, not about different announced content: Nintendo lists the same remake and features for both formats. The larger decision is whether you want that remake at all, or the original N64 game through a subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does buying the physical Switch 2 edition include the digital version?
Nintendo’s listings present physical and digital as separate editions. They do not state that a physical purchase grants a second digital license, so buy the format you intend to use and check the final package details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I play the physical card completely offline?
That has not been established. Nintendo’s announced page does not specify the card’s exact contents, required downloads, patches or internet checks. Confirm the final packaging and support guidance after release.

Is the digital game only 27 GB?
Nintendo estimates the digital game file at 27 GB. Leave additional free space for system software, updates, save data and other installed content; 27 GB should not be treated as the complete storage requirement.
Does Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack provide the Switch 2 remake?
No. The membership provides access to the original Nintendo 64 title in the classics catalog. Nintendo presents the remake as a separate Switch 2 product.
What happens if my Expansion Pack membership expires?
The N64 catalog route is tied to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack access. If the membership ends, catalog access follows Nintendo’s service rules rather than functioning as a permanent standalone purchase.
Is Ocarina of Time 3D the same as the Switch 2 remake?
No. Ocarina of Time 3D is a separate Nintendo 3DS-family edition with refined gameplay, overhauled 3D visuals, touch inventory and motion controls.
Will physical and digital versions perform differently?
Nintendo’s product pages describe the same announced remake features for both formats but provide no measured loading, frame-rate, resolution or image-quality comparison. Do not assume a performance advantage.
Which format is best if I already pay for Expansion Pack?
Expansion Pack is suitable if you specifically want the original N64 version and its other membership benefits. If you want Nintendo’s new Switch 2 remake, choose its physical or digital edition separately.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: choose physical for a tangible collection, digital for download convenience and sufficient storage, and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack only for the original N64 game. The Switch 2 remake is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and final prices, stock and cartridge requirements should be verified at release.
