A clear adult route is Forest Temple → Fire Temple → Water Temple → Shadow Temple → Spirit Temple → Ganon’s Castle, although the adult temples are not completely linear. Fire and Forest can be exchanged, Water can be started before Fire is fully finished in some progressions, and Shadow and Spirit can be approached in either order once their prerequisites are met.
The complete Ocarina of Time dungeon route
The most useful way to think about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is as two phases. Child Link completes three dungeons in a set order. Adult Link then follows a recommended sequence through five medallion temples before entering Ganon’s Castle, but several of those adult temples can be rearranged.

| Phase | Dungeon | Location | How you gain entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Child 1 | Inside the Deku Tree | Kokiri Forest | Get the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield, then speak with the Great Deku Tree. |
| Child 2 | Dodongo’s Cavern | Death Mountain | Receive the Goron’s Bracelet from Darunia and use a Bomb Flower to open the route. |
| Child 3 | Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly | Zora’s Fountain | Find Ruto’s Letter in Lake Hylia, show it to King Zora, catch a fish and release it before Lord Jabu-Jabu. |
| Adult 1 (recommended) | Forest Temple | Sacred Forest Meadow in the Lost Woods | Obtain the Hookshot from Dampé’s Crypt and use it on the small tree at the Meadow entrance. |
| Adult route | Fire Temple | Death Mountain Crater | Reach the crater; the Goron Tunic helps Link enter safely, and Sheik teaches Bolero of Fire there. |
| Adult route | Water Temple | Under Lake Hylia | Sink with the Iron Boots and use the Hookshot to open the entrance. |
| Late adult | Shadow Temple | Kakariko Village graveyard | After the relevant story event, learn Nocturne of Shadow, use Din’s Fire at the entrance and navigate with the Lens of Truth. |
| Late adult | Spirit Temple | Desert Colossus | Cross the desert, learn Requiem of Spirit, then return as child Link and later adult Link. |
| Final | Ganon’s Castle | End-game castle | After the medallion-dungeon progression, clear its six seal rooms to reach the final encounters. |
This table is a practical route, not a rule that every save file must follow. The walkthrough commonly used for the game documents alternate adult progressions, while the child sequence remains fixed.

The first three dungeons are gated by a series of story actions and items that naturally point to one another. Once the game’s adult portion opens, access is distributed among songs, equipment and story events. That creates several valid routes instead of a single unavoidable chain.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Forest, Fire and Water are the main point of variation. A straightforward route starts with Forest, then Fire, then Water, but the documented walkthrough also describes Fire and Forest being swapped and Water being entered before Fire is completely finished.
- Shadow and Spirit are late-game choices. After their respective prerequisites are available, either can be tackled first. Spirit is especially unusual because its dungeon progress is deliberately split between the two ages.
- Optional areas are not substitutes for the temples. Bottom of the Well and Ice Cavern provide important equipment, but they are side dungeons rather than required entries in the main temple sequence.
If a guide, challenge run or personal plan uses a different adult order, that does not automatically indicate a mistake. Check whether the required song, item and story event for that dungeon have been obtained.
Child Link’s three dungeons
1. Inside the Deku Tree
Where it is: Kokiri Forest.
How to reach it: Start by obtaining the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield, then speak with the Great Deku Tree. That conversation begins the first dungeon sequence and opens the tree itself.
The dungeon teaches the basic pattern used throughout the game: explore several floors, solve environmental puzzles, collect a dungeon-specific item and use it to reach the boss. Inside the Deku Tree, that major item is the Fairy Slingshot. It gives you a reliable ranged attack for switches and enemies that cannot be reached safely with the sword.
Recommended Free Tools
- Collect the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield before attempting the tree.
- Speak with the Great Deku Tree to trigger access.
- Explore the tree’s rooms and floors until you obtain the Fairy Slingshot.
- Use the dungeon tools and keys to reach Queen Gohma.
- Defeat Queen Gohma to complete the first dungeon and advance the story.
The important progression point is not merely the boss victory; it is the fact that the Deku Tree establishes the child route that leads to Death Mountain next.
2. Dodongo’s Cavern
Where it is: Partway up Death Mountain.
How to reach it: After the Deku Tree section, travel to Death Mountain and obtain the Goron’s Bracelet from Darunia. The bracelet lets child Link pick up Bomb Flowers. Use one to open the blocked route into Dodongo’s Cavern.
- Reach Goron City and find Darunia.
- Complete the interaction that awards the Goron’s Bracelet.
- Return to the Death Mountain path leading toward the cavern.
- Pick up a Bomb Flower and place or throw it where the blockage prevents entry.
- Enter Dodongo’s Cavern and work through its rooms to the dungeon boss.
The bracelet is the access gate, so repeatedly searching for another entrance before obtaining it wastes time. The Bomb Flower route is the intended way into the cavern in this part of the game.
3. Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly
Where it is: Zora’s Fountain, behind Zora’s Domain.

How to reach it: Find Ruto’s Letter in Lake Hylia and show it to King Zora. Then catch a fish, carry it to Lord Jabu-Jabu and release it in front of him. The fish is the immediate trigger that allows the final child dungeon to begin.
- Travel to Lake Hylia and retrieve Ruto’s Letter.
- Take the letter to King Zora in Zora’s Domain.
- Catch a fish in a bottle; the fish is needed for the entrance interaction.
- Go to Lord Jabu-Jabu in Zora’s Fountain.
- Release the fish before him to be swallowed and enter the dungeon.
Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly, the dungeon’s rooms and switches revolve around rescuing Princess Ruto and navigating the creature’s interior. Completing it finishes the fixed child-dungeon sequence. The next route is the adult section, where the temple order becomes more flexible.
Adult Link’s recommended route and access details
The following order is the easiest general-purpose plan because it introduces the adult dungeons in a sensible progression and places the optional equipment checks where they are most useful. It is not the only legal order.
4. Forest Temple
Where it is: The Sacred Forest Meadow in the Lost Woods.

At the Meadow, use the Hookshot on the small tree to reach the temple entrance.
- Go to Dampé’s Crypt and obtain the Hookshot.
- Enter the Lost Woods and follow the route to the Sacred Forest Meadow.
- At the Meadow, identify the small tree positioned for Hookshot access.
- Fire the Hookshot at the tree to cross the gap and enter the Forest Temple.
- Explore the temple and recover the dungeon items needed to reach its boss.
Forest Temple is the recommended first adult dungeon because its entrance requirement is clear and the Hookshot is the key mobility item for reaching it. The setting also explains why the temple is inaccessible before the adult progression: the Lost Woods route alone is not enough without the Hookshot.
5. Fire Temple
Where it is: Death Mountain Crater.
How to reach it: Reach Death Mountain Crater as adult Link. The Goron Tunic helps Link enter the crater safely, and Sheik teaches Bolero of Fire there. Use the crater route to approach the Fire Temple.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Travel to Death Mountain Crater during the adult phase.
- Equip the Goron Tunic when entering the crater so the area can be traversed safely.
- Learn Bolero of Fire from Sheik in the crater.
- Follow the crater route to the Fire Temple entrance.
- Complete the temple’s rescue and room objectives before moving on to the next adult area.
Fire Temple does not have to be the second adult dungeon in every playthrough. The documented walkthrough allows Forest and Fire to change places, and it describes a progression in which Water Temple begins before Fire is completely finished. For a first run, however, placing Fire after Forest keeps the route easy to follow.
6. Water Temple
Where it is: Beneath Lake Hylia.
How to reach it: Use the Iron Boots to sink beneath Lake Hylia, then use the Hookshot to open the entrance. The temple itself requires you to change the water level so that previously inaccessible rooms and passages become available.
- Travel to Lake Hylia as adult Link.
- Equip the Iron Boots and sink to the underwater entrance.
- Use the Hookshot at the entrance mechanism to open the way inside.
- Locate the temple’s water-level controls and raise or lower the water as each section requires.
- Revisit rooms after changing the level; a passage that is flooded at one setting may be reachable when the water is lowered, and the reverse can also apply.
Water Temple is the adult dungeon most likely to feel out of order because its progress is not a simple forward corridor. The water-level changes are the central navigation system. If you reach a dead end, check whether the current level is preventing access rather than assuming a key or item is missing.
Although the recommended route places Water after Fire, the walkthrough documents a valid progression that starts Water before Fire is fully completed. That flexibility is useful if you have already met the Iron Boots and Hookshot requirements and want to continue there.
7. Shadow Temple
Where it is: Beneath the graveyard in Kakariko Village.

How to reach it: After the relevant story event in Kakariko, learn Nocturne of Shadow. Use Din’s Fire to open the entrance and rely on the Lens of Truth to reveal and navigate deceptive parts of the temple.
- Return to Kakariko Village after the story event that makes the Shadow Temple route available.
- Learn Nocturne of Shadow.
- Go to the village graveyard and use the song to reach the temple approach.
- Use Din’s Fire at the entrance to open the way.
- Keep the Lens of Truth ready; hidden floors, walls and paths are part of the temple’s navigation.
Shadow Temple is a late adult dungeon because its entrance depends on both a story event and specific tools. If the graveyard route appears blocked, verify those prerequisites before trying to force the entrance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. Spirit Temple
Where it is: Desert Colossus.
How to reach it: Cross the desert and learn Requiem of Spirit. The temple is unusual: one portion must be completed as child Link and another as adult Link. You therefore visit the same destination in two ages rather than clearing it in one uninterrupted adult visit.
- Cross the desert and reach Desert Colossus.
- Learn Requiem of Spirit so the location can be revisited efficiently.
- Return to the temple as child Link and complete the child-required section.
- Change to adult Link and return to finish the adult-required section.
- Use the items and switches from each age’s section to progress toward the temple’s completion.
The two-age structure is why Spirit Temple can appear to be incomplete even when you have reached it correctly. Leaving after the child section is not a failure; it is part of the intended design. The walkthrough also allows Spirit and Shadow to be exchanged in the late adult route once their prerequisites are available.

9. Ganon’s Castle
Where it is: The final castle reached after the medallion-dungeon progression.
How to reach it: Finish the required adult progression and enter the castle at the end of the route. Inside, the walkthrough describes six seal rooms. Clear those rooms before the final encounters become accessible.
- Complete the required temple progression and make your way to Ganon’s Castle.
- Enter each seal room and solve its combat or puzzle challenge.
- Clear all six seals; skipping a room leaves the final route incomplete.
- Proceed through the opened path to the game’s final encounters.
Ganon’s Castle is therefore not another interchangeable temple. It is the end of the main dungeon route, and its seal-room structure is the final progression gate.

Two smaller dungeon areas are commonly listed alongside the main route. They are useful, but they should be kept separate from the required child and adult sequence.
Bottom of the Well
Where it is: Kakariko Village.
How to open it: Learn Song of Storms as adult Link, return to Kakariko as child Link and play the song at the windmill. The well drains, exposing the entrance.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- As adult Link, learn Song of Storms.
- Return to Kakariko Village as child Link.
- Play Song of Storms at the windmill.
- Enter the drained well and explore its rooms.
- Claim the Lens of Truth, the area’s major reward.
Bottom of the Well is optional in the sense that it is not one of the three child dungeons or the adult medallion temples. Its Lens of Truth is nevertheless especially valuable for the Shadow Temple, where hidden routes are central to navigation.
Ice Cavern
Where it is: Behind the frozen Zora’s Domain.
How to reach it: Enter the frozen area and use Blue Fire to progress through the cavern.
- Travel to the frozen Zora’s Domain.
- Enter the Ice Cavern behind the frozen area.
- Use Blue Fire where the ice blocks the route.
- Complete the cavern’s puzzles and collect the Iron Boots.
- Afterward, Sheik teaches Serenade of Water.
Ice Cavern is a side dungeon rather than a required position in the main temple list. Its Iron Boots are the key practical reward and are also the equipment needed to sink to the Water Temple entrance.
What to do when a dungeon entrance is unavailable
Most apparent sequence breaks are missing prerequisites rather than permanent mistakes. Use this checklist before backtracking through every region.
- Deku Tree: Confirm that you have the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield and have spoken with the Great Deku Tree.
- Dodongo’s Cavern: Find Darunia and obtain the Goron’s Bracelet; without it, the Bomb Flower entrance route is not available.
- Jabu-Jabu: Retrieve Ruto’s Letter, show it to King Zora, then bring a fish to Lord Jabu-Jabu.
- Forest Temple: Obtain the Hookshot from Dampé’s Crypt before attempting the small-tree route in Sacred Forest Meadow.
- Fire Temple: Reach Death Mountain Crater and use the Goron Tunic for the crater approach; learn Bolero of Fire from Sheik there.
- Water Temple: Make sure you have the Iron Boots and Hookshot, then sink beneath Lake Hylia.
- Shadow Temple: Verify the Kakariko story event, Nocturne of Shadow, Din’s Fire and the Lens of Truth.
- Spirit Temple: Cross the desert and learn Requiem of Spirit; remember that both child and adult sections are required.
- Ganon’s Castle: Finish the medallion-dungeon progression and clear all six seal rooms inside the castle.
How many dungeons does Ocarina of Time have?
There is no universally consistent total because guides classify the smaller areas differently. The GameFAQs walkthrough cited for this route describes the game as having nine dungeons, two mini-dungeons and one optional dungeon. That is the counting convention of that guide, not an official number that resolves every category.
For practical route planning, count the three child dungeons, the five adult medallion temples, and Ganon’s Castle as the main progression. Treat Bottom of the Well and Ice Cavern separately as side areas. This avoids presenting an optional or mini-dungeon classification as though every guide uses the same definition.
A dependable playthrough plan
For a first playthrough with minimal backtracking, use this plan:
- Complete Inside the Deku Tree.
- Use the Goron’s Bracelet and Bomb Flower route to clear Dodongo’s Cavern.
- Use Ruto’s Letter, King Zora and a fish to enter Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.
- As adult Link, obtain the Hookshot and enter Forest Temple.
- Visit Death Mountain Crater, learn Bolero of Fire and clear Fire Temple.
- Use the Iron Boots and Hookshot to enter Water Temple beneath Lake Hylia.
- Open the Kakariko graveyard route and clear Shadow Temple.
- Cross the desert, learn Requiem of Spirit and complete Spirit Temple in both ages.
- Enter Ganon’s Castle and clear its six seal rooms before the final encounters.
If you choose a different adult order, preserve the same rule: follow the dungeon whose entry item, song and story state you already possess. The game’s flexibility is intentional, while the first three child dungeons remain the fixed foundation of every route.
