The highest-value Obsidian changes are not a hidden “turbo” switch. Use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for a new Sync remote vault, preserve its encryption password, keep an independent copy of your vault, understand Sync’s version-history limits, and select Live Preview or Source mode according to your plugins and writing habits. These steps improve privacy and recovery; Obsidian’s current documentation does not establish a particular setting that guarantees faster indexing, startup, or typing.

There is an important boundary: Sync encryption protects the remote vault and its connection to Obsidian’s servers, not the vault stored on your computer or phone. Local-device privacy therefore needs separate operating-system or filesystem protection.

1. Separate remote-vault privacy from local-vault privacy

Obsidian stores a vault as ordinary files in a folder. Sync can protect the copy held remotely, but it does not automatically encrypt the local folder. Obsidian states this plainly in its Security and privacy documentation: “Your choice only affects your remote vault. Obsidian doesn’t encrypt your local vault.”

That means two different threats require two different controls:

  • Remote exposure: choose E2EE for the Sync remote vault so the encryption key is held by you rather than by Obsidian.
  • Device exposure: protect the computer or mobile device with a strong account password, automatic locking, and the operating system’s full-disk or filesystem encryption. The cited Obsidian documentation does not specify a particular operating-system product or configuration.
  • Loss or corruption: maintain a separate backup that is not dependent on the same Sync remote vault.

Do not treat a Sync subscription, version history, or a locked device as a complete backup strategy. Each addresses a different failure mode.

2. Choose end-to-end encryption when creating a Sync remote vault

What E2EE protects

When you create a new remote vault in Obsidian Sync, end-to-end encryption is the default option according to Obsidian’s current documentation. With E2EE, the vault is encrypted before it is sent to Obsidian’s servers, and Obsidian says it cannot read the remote vault contents. The page identifies AES-256-GCM and scrypt with salt as implementation details; those details describe the documented design, not an independent guarantee against every possible threat.

Standard encryption is easier to recover because the key is managed by Obsidian. E2EE gives you stronger control over who can decrypt the remote data, but it makes the password your responsibility.

Choice Privacy Recovery and convenience Best fit
End-to-end encryption Obsidian says it cannot read the remote vault. You must retain the encryption password. Obsidian cannot recover it. Users who want Obsidian-hosted data unreadable to the service itself and can manage a secret safely.
Standard encryption Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, but the key is managed by Obsidian. Less risk of losing access because the service manages the key. Users who prioritize account recovery and convenience over holding the decryption key themselves.

Protect the E2EE password

Obsidian does not save the E2EE password. Its documentation warns: “If you ever lose or forget the encryption password, you won’t be able to connect additional vaults to your remote vault.” Write the password into a secure place you can retrieve independently of the devices currently syncing. A password manager, an offline emergency record, or another protected method can serve that purpose; the important requirement is recoverability without exposing the secret publicly.

HUION Note Digital Notebook with Real-Time & Offline Sync, Battery-Free Pen
  • Creative Paper Tool: Huion Note is an app-based paper product that consists of a digital pen, regular A5 notepad, and software application. It gives you digital copies of your handwritten work while still allowing the tactile aesthetic of pen to real paper.
  • From Page To Screen: Everything you write is simultaneously captured with vector lines and seamlessly transferred to your device via the free Huion Note app (available for mobile devices on iOS and Android).
  • Never Miss A Word: Record audio to sync with your notes, and click play to relive your handwriting process and ensure nothing gets lost.
  • Share Your Ideas: Easily access your notes, inspiration, drawings, and doodles from the mobile device and one-click share as images, PDF, or MP4 files with your classmates, teammates & and colleagues.
  • Organize Your Notes: Keep all your notes in one place and you can merge, split, or move the pages into different groups as you want in the Huion Note app. It also provides various editing tools such as highlighter to help you re-edit your notes and highlight key ideas.

Before enabling E2EE, verify that you can retrieve the password and that your existing devices contain the latest files. Do not assume a browser-saved password or a single phone is a durable recovery plan. If you change the password, update your protected record immediately.

3. Back up the local vault before changing or replacing Sync

Version history is useful, but it is not an independent backup. Before replacing a remote vault, disconnecting devices during recovery, or making a major migration, create a complete copy of the local vault. Obsidian’s recovery guidance gives two straightforward examples: copy the vault folder or create a ZIP archive.

A safe backup procedure

  1. Close Obsidian on the device that has the most complete, current vault. Closing the app reduces the chance of copying a file while it is being changed.
  2. Copy the entire vault folder, including hidden configuration files if you rely on them. Alternatively, create a ZIP archive of the folder.
  3. Store the copy on a different storage location from the working vault. An external SSD is one possible destination, but it is a storage option, not an Obsidian requirement or endorsement.
  4. Give the backup a date-based name and record which device supplied it. Keep at least one copy that is not continuously connected to the computer.
  5. Open a few Markdown notes and attachments from the copy, or inspect the archive contents, so you know the backup is readable before starting recovery.

Do not overwrite the only good local copy while experimenting with Sync. If a conflict appears, preserve the original folder first, then work from a duplicate.

Replacing a remote vault after losing the E2EE password

Obsidian’s documented route is deliberate because the old encrypted remote vault cannot be unlocked with a forgotten password:

  • Flexible Note Management: Built-in editing tools including brushes, highlighters, colors and page management, support tagging and quick search. Re-edit notes freely and highlight key ideas, with Google Cloud storage offering secure backup for easy access anytime with no storage limits to worry about
  1. Back up every locally available device as described above.
  2. Disconnect the devices from the unusable remote vault so you do not propagate an incomplete state.
  3. Create a replacement remote vault with a new encryption password that you store securely.
  4. Reconnect devices one at a time, starting with the local copy you confirmed as authoritative.
  5. After each device finishes syncing, check representative notes, folders, and attachments before connecting the next device.

The exact screens can change between Obsidian releases, so read the current Security and privacy instructions while performing the replacement. The backup is your safety net if the wrong device is treated as the source.

4. Use Sync version history as a rollback tool

With the Sync core plugin enabled, Obsidian provides history for restoring notes and deleted files. Retention is plan-dependent and attachments have a shorter window than notes:

Item Standard plan Plus plan Important limitation
Note version history One month Twelve months These are the periods stated in Obsidian’s current documentation; confirm the page if your plan or policy changes.
Older attachment versions Two weeks Attachment history is shorter than note history.

Use history when you need to recover a deleted note, undo an unwanted edit, or inspect an earlier version. It should not be your only copy because retention expires and it remains part of the Sync service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore Sync settings

Sync can also keep settings history when vault configuration sync is enabled. The documented path is Settings → Core plugins → Sync → Vault configuration sync. Choose the relevant settings-history restore action, then reload or restart Obsidian so the restored configuration takes effect. Take a fresh vault backup before restoring settings, especially if you are troubleshooting a plugin or theme conflict.

Restoring settings can change more than the one option you were investigating. Record your current configuration or keep the backup so you can return to it if the restored state behaves unexpectedly.

5. Pick Live Preview or Source mode for your workflow

Editing mode affects how Markdown appears while you write, not the privacy boundary of the vault. Obsidian’s Live Preview documentation describes Live Preview as rendered Markdown displayed during editing, while Source mode shows the underlying Markdown syntax. The practical choice is the mode that makes your writing and troubleshooting easier.

Mode What you see while editing Choose it when Compatibility consideration
Live Preview Markdown is rendered in place as you work. You want headings, links, lists, and formatting to resemble the finished note while typing. Some plugins and themes may not yet be fully compatible with the newer editor.
Source mode The raw Markdown syntax remains visible. You frequently edit syntax, debug formatting, or depend on extensions that behave better with the older presentation. You may need to read more markup while drafting.

Change the default editing mode

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open the Editor section.
  3. Find Default editing mode.
  4. Select Live Preview or Source mode.
  5. Open a representative note and test links, callouts, tables, embeds, and any editor-related plugins you use.

Obsidian’s guidance cautions that some plugins and themes may not yet support the newer editor completely. If a note displays incorrectly or a command stops working, switch modes temporarily and test with the suspected extension disabled. Do not describe either mode as objectively faster: the available documentation does not quantify launch time, typing latency, indexing speed, or battery use.

6. Approach “faster vault” changes without undocumented switches

There is no verified current list from the cited official pages showing that a particular indexing toggle, Restricted mode setting, community-plugin permission, or excluded-file control produces a measured speed improvement. Avoid changing obscure settings solely because an online checklist labels them “performance optimizations.” A setting with an uncertain effect can make troubleshooting and synchronization harder.

Use a reversible test instead:

  • Change one setting at a time and note the original value.
  • Test the same actions before and after: opening the vault, searching, switching notes, typing in a large note, and syncing a representative attachment.
  • Check whether the perceived slowdown is actually an editor or theme compatibility problem.
  • Revert the change if the result is neutral or negative.
  • Keep your backup current before testing anything that alters files, plugins, or Sync configuration.

This method does not promise a particular percentage gain. It prevents a speculative tweak from becoming a data-loss or compatibility problem.

7. A practical privacy and recovery checklist

  • Create a local vault backup before enabling, disabling, or replacing Sync.
  • For a new remote vault, choose E2EE if your threat model requires Obsidian not to be able to read the remote data.
  • Store the E2EE password somewhere secure and independently recoverable.
  • Protect every device that contains the local vault with a strong login, automatic lock, and available full-disk or filesystem encryption.
  • Keep at least one backup outside the continuously synced working location.
  • Know your plan’s documented note-history period and remember that attachment history lasts only two weeks.
  • Use Settings → Core plugins → Sync → Vault configuration sync when you need to inspect or restore settings history.
  • Choose Live Preview or Source mode based on your workflow and plugin/theme compatibility, not an unsupported speed claim.
  • When testing performance, change one variable, measure the same task, and keep a rollback copy.

8. Troubleshooting common failure points

Additional devices will not connect after enabling E2EE

Confirm that you are entering the exact encryption password used for that remote vault. Obsidian cannot recover a lost password. If it is genuinely unavailable, stop trying random replacements, back up local data, and follow the replacement-remote-vault process rather than risking an overwrite.

The version you need is missing

Check whether the note is older than your plan’s retention period or whether the missing item is an attachment, which has only two weeks of older-version storage. Restore what Sync still has, then use your independent backup for anything outside that window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restored setting did not apply

After using settings history, reload or restart Obsidian. If the problem remains, return to the backed-up configuration and test the suspected plugin or theme in Live Preview and Source mode separately.

A mode change appears to fix an issue

That points to an editor, theme, or plugin compatibility difference rather than proof that one mode makes every vault faster. Keep the mode that supports your actual workflow, and report or isolate the incompatible extension if necessary.
