If you are considering leaving a heavy whiteboard app for Obsidian, you are really choosing between two built-in-or-plugin options that split the job differently. Obsidian Canvas gives you an infinite space for arranging notes, files and media. The Excalidraw plugin adds sketching and diagrams that live as files inside your vault and link to your notes. Used together, they keep drawing and note-taking in one local workspace, but each has documented limits that matter before you move anything.
This article explains what each option currently documents, how they compare on structure, portability, embedding, publishing and sync, and how to decide which one fits your work. It does not benchmark commercial whiteboard apps or measure speed. Where a claim comes from a vendor or maintainer page, the source and its check date are named.

What each tool does
Obsidian and Excalidraw overlap less than their names suggest. One is a spatial layout surface; the other is a drawing tool. Choosing the right one starts with knowing which job you need done.

Obsidian Canvas
Canvas is Obsidian’s built-in visual space. Obsidian’s Canvas product page, checked 7 October 2026, describes it as a way to arrange notes, images, PDFs, videos, audio and interactive web pages in an infinite visual space. The same page states, “Canvas comes free with Obsidian.” Cards can be notes from your vault, images, videos, PDFs, web pages or another canvas nested inside the current one. Canvas is strongest when the content already exists as notes and media and you want to map relationships between them.

The Excalidraw plugin
The Obsidian Excalidraw plugin, documented in its project README (checked 7 October 2026), stores and edits Excalidraw drawings inside your vault, lets you embed drawings in documents, and lets you link drawings to notes and to other drawings. The README also covers internal links, backlinks, transclusions, image support, LaTeX and configurable image exports. This is the option for freehand sketches, diagrams and annotated visuals that need to stay connected to written notes.

Portability is where the two options differ most, and it matters if your diagrams need to leave Obsidian.

Canvas files
Obsidian stores Canvas files locally in the open JSON Canvas format. Obsidian’s product page states that the format was “designed to work with other tools.” Because the file is plain structured data on your own disk, you keep control of it even if you later move away from Obsidian. Whether another tool reads the file in a particular way is outside what these sources establish, so test a file in any target app before you rely on it.

Excalidraw drawings
Excalidraw drawings can be exported as PNG or SVG. These exports are rendered images. They are useful for sharing or embedding elsewhere, but they are not the editable drawing you work with inside the plugin. If you need to keep editing a diagram, keep the native drawing file as your source and treat the image as a copy.
Embedding drawings and canvases in notes
Obsidian’s help page on embedded files states, “Embedded files display their content inline in a note and stay up to date when the source file changes.” That applies to both formats, but the result differs.

- Canvas embeds show shapes only. Cards’ shapes appear inline, but the text inside those cards does not. If a canvas depends on its labels, embed a separate note or a rendered image instead.
- Excalidraw drawings embed as drawings. The plugin’s documented embedding support lets a drawing sit inside a document and update when the drawing changes.
Publishing with Obsidian Publish
Excalidraw drawings do not appear on Obsidian Publish unless an image version is inserted. The plugin README says to configure an automatically inserted PNG or SVG version so that the image is what visitors see. The Canvas sources reviewed do not describe how Canvas content renders on Publish, so do not assume a canvas will appear there as it does in the app.
Sync, history and what you pay for
The plugin README states that full drawing history and synchronization across devices require an Obsidian Sync subscription. Canvas itself is included free with Obsidian, but the sources do not say how Canvas files behave under Sync. If you work on several devices, check your Sync setup with a test canvas before you commit a large project to it.

Setup
Canvas needs no installation. The Excalidraw plugin is a community plugin, so setup takes a few extra steps.
- Open Obsidian and go to Settings, then Community plugins. If Restricted mode is on, turn it off so community plugins can be installed.
- Select Browse, search for Excalidraw, and choose the Obsidian Excalidraw plugin.
- Select Install, then Enable.
- Create a drawing from the file explorer or the command palette, then confirm it appears as a file in your vault.
- Create a canvas to compare how the two behave in your own vault before you move any project over.
Community plugins are not sandboxed and can have deep control over the app. Obsidian’s Web Viewer, a desktop core plugin, is a convenience for browsing inside Obsidian and is not a full replacement for your main browser. When third-party plugins are installed, Obsidian advises using your primary browser for sensitive or password-protected sites.

- Choose Canvas if your material is already in notes, PDFs, images or videos and you need to arrange and connect it spatially.
- Choose the Excalidraw plugin if you need freehand sketches, diagrams or annotated drawings that stay linked to notes and can be exported as PNG or SVG.
