Repeated OBS reconnects on an Airtel 5G hotspot are a reason to investigate the network path, not proof that Airtel is at fault. Check whether the upload connection can sustain your stream, reduce the stream’s bandwidth demand if it cannot, and compare results while recording OBS and YouTube diagnostics. A fast download test or a brief upload-speed peak is not enough to establish stable streaming capacity.
First, establish whether upload instability matches the reconnects
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Treat that as the first hypothesis to test: the problem could involve the mobile connection, the route to YouTube, or the computer’s network configuration. It does not identify the cause by itself. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide explains the network symptoms and tests.

- Note the conditions. Record the date and time, your location, the phone and computer connection setup, OBS output bitrate, and whether the phone’s hotspot remains connected when OBS reconnects.
- Watch OBS Stats. During the stream, note dropped frames and disconnect times. Review the OBS log after the test for network or connection errors.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Record stream-health messages and whether the encoder appears healthy. YouTube advises testing with a representative stream and monitoring stream health in its live encoder settings guide.
- Repeat upload tests during the actual streaming window. A single speed-test result cannot describe a connection whose capacity may change. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate, keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth, and leaving spare capacity. Its streaming tips recommend 20% spare upload bandwidth.
There is no sourced universal Airtel 5G upload-speed figure that can establish what your hotspot should deliver. Airtel’s hotspot troubleshooting page covers general hotspot connection problems; it does not specify an OBS setting or diagnose an individual 5G connection.

Use sustained upload performance under conditions representative of your stream, not the best momentary result. OBS Project’s guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate. YouTube separately recommends retaining 20% spare upload bandwidth. These are starting guidelines, not guarantees; if capacity varies, choose a bitrate that stays stable through the weaker periods you observe.

YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 figures below are platform guidance, not proof that a cellular connection can sustain them:
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These values are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication year. AV1 and H.265 have different bitrate ranges, so use the table for the codec actually selected rather than applying H.264 numbers across the board. YouTube specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Those encoder settings help meet YouTube’s requirements but cannot stabilize a changing hotspot.

Change one setting at a time
- Lower OBS’s output bitrate below the sustained upload capacity you observed, preserving headroom.
- If reconnects or dropped frames continue, reduce resolution or frame rate to lower bandwidth demand; then retest under the same conditions.
- Compare the results using four measures: sustained upload headroom, OBS dropped frames and reconnects, YouTube stream health, and the resulting picture quality.
Choose the highest setting that remains stable during a representative test—not the highest one a peak speed-test result appears to allow. For a different codec or resolution, use YouTube’s applicable encoder table rather than assuming the H.264 figures above apply.
Try dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS offers the option “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion.” When enabled, it can lower bitrate during congestion so the stream may keep transmitting at reduced quality. It can be useful when upload capacity fluctuates, but it does not repair weak or unstable radio conditions, congestion, or carrier routing. If the option prevents a disconnect, the quality reduction is part of the trade-off—not evidence that the underlying connection is fixed.

Isolate the source by testing the connection path
Keep a record and change one factor at a time. That makes comparisons useful rather than leaving several simultaneous changes whose effects cannot be separated.
- Try another YouTube ingest server if OBS allows it. Compare reconnects and dropped frames under otherwise similar conditions.
- Test another internet connection with the same computer and OBS settings. If the stream stabilizes, the hotspot path becomes a stronger suspect, though that alone does not identify whether the issue is the phone, radio conditions, carrier network, or route.
- Compare another streaming service as a diagnostic test if appropriate. A difference can help identify whether symptoms are service-related; it is not itself a fix.
- Consider a wired phone-to-computer test only if both devices support USB tethering. A suitable data cable may let you test a different phone-to-computer link; it does not improve mobile signal, and compatibility varies. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable, but that guidance does not specifically validate USB tethering as a fix for Airtel 5G.
Check OBS, Windows networking, and security software
If the hotspot remains connected but OBS still loses its stream connection, check the computer side as well as the mobile link.

- Unlocked, portable hot spot for 5G and 4G LTE around the world, certified with AT&T requires a 5G compatible SIM card. Ask your 5G wireless network provider for the best 5G data plan for your needs
- Update OBS and review its log around the recorded reconnect times.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, firewall or security application, network-prioritization utility, or “optimizer” is interfering with the connection. Avoid leaving security protections disabled as a permanent fix.
- Confirm OBS’s Bind to IP setting is set to Default.
- OBS suggests trying IPv4 only as a diagnostic test. If it makes no difference, restore IPv4/IPv6 rather than treating IPv4-only as a universal solution.
- Network optimizations and TCP pacing in OBS’s current troubleshooting guide are Windows-only options; do not apply Windows-specific steps to other operating systems.
For YouTube-side diagnosis, follow its streaming tips, including checking the connection and contacting your internet provider if connection tests show problems.

Escalate with a useful evidence packet
If the encoder appears healthy in YouTube and OBS logs point to unstable outbound connectivity, send Airtel support a concise record rather than only reporting that “5G is slow.” Include your location, dates and times of the failures, hotspot status, repeated upload-test results taken during the streaming window, OBS bitrate and settings, the relevant OBS log, and YouTube stream-health messages. These details can help support investigate the specific connection and time periods; they do not predetermine the cause.
