A scene change can interrupt an OBS playlist source, but that alone does not explain why YouTube marks the whole broadcast offline. Find out whether the failure is in playback, OBS’s output, or the connection to YouTube: reproduce the switch while recording locally, check OBS Stats and its log, and compare those results with the incoming-stream status in YouTube Live Control Room.
First separate a playlist problem from a stream problem
A scene is a collection of sources that make up the output OBS sends. When you switch scenes, a media source may become visible, hidden, restarted, paused, or unloaded depending on its type and settings. That can make the video or audio change without ending the broadcast.

- OBS output: Does OBS still show the stream as connected? Does its bitrate fall, or does the dropped-frames counter rise?
- YouTube reception: Does Live Control Room still show incoming data, or report that it is not receiving a stream?
OBS’s dropped-frame guidance concerns the connection from your computer to the remote ingest server, while YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also asks you to inspect the encoder output and errors. Those signals help identify which branch to investigate; no one signal alone proves the cause.

Reproduce the scene change while recording locally
- Start a local OBS recording and note the time.
- Switch to the playlist scene, then switch away and back in the same way that normally triggers the problem.
- Check the recording at the switch: look for frozen or black video, missing audio, or an interruption.
- At the same timestamp, check OBS’s connection state, bitrate, dropped frames, and log, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s incoming-stream status.
If the recording also freezes, goes black, or loses audio, investigate the source, plugin, rendering load, or encoder. If the recording is healthy but OBS disconnects or YouTube stops receiving data, focus on the output connection and ingest path. This comparison narrows the search; it does not identify a specific fault without the log and source configuration.
Check the playlist source’s visibility and playback settings
Identify whether the scene uses a VLC Video source with a playlist or a regular Media Source. Their settings affect playback when a scene becomes inactive, but they do not directly determine whether YouTube considers the broadcast online.

For a VLC Video playlist
- Visibility Behaviour: Controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is hidden. OBS documents stopping while hidden and restarting when visible as the default behaviour.
- Loop Playlist: Controls whether playback starts again after the playlist reaches its end. It is separate from what happens when the source is hidden.
For a regular Media Source
- Restart playback when source becomes active: Determines whether playback restarts when the source becomes active.
- Close file when inactive: Unloads the media while the source is inactive. OBS notes that showing it again may produce a short delay as it loads.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the recording test. A playlist that stops or reloads at a scene switch is evidence of a playback behaviour, not proof that OBS stopped streaming.

Test a minimal scene, then inspect the log and Stats
Isolate scene contents
Run the same stream with a simple scene that excludes the playlist, browser overlays, and third-party plugins. If the problem occurs only with the original scene, reintroduce its sources or enable its plugins one at a time, reproducing the switch and noting the timestamp. This is a controlled way to isolate a scene-specific factor, not a diagnosis of any particular setup.

Read the evidence around the failure time
- Output disconnect or reconnect: Indicates OBS’s stream output changed state. Compare its timing with YouTube’s incoming-stream status.
- Dropped frames attributed to connection stalls: OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream.
- Encoder errors or encoding lag: Follow YouTube’s advice to inspect encoder output and CPU load. If those fail at the scene switch, investigate workload or encoding alongside the affected sources.
- Rendering lag: If the issue appears only with a complex scene, reduce the scene to a minimal test and add elements back individually.
- Healthy local recording and encoder output, but failed reception: Investigate the connection between OBS and YouTube’s ingest server.
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns dropped frames; it does not mean OBS can never be involved in any other streaming failure.
Check outbound connectivity if the evidence points to the connection
YouTube recommends testing the outbound internet connection after checking encoder output, errors, and CPU load. If the test finds a connection problem, YouTube advises contacting your ISP. OBS also recommends checking network configuration and whether a VPN or security software may be interfering.

A general speed test does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable. When possible, compare network behaviour during a reproduced scene change with the OBS log and YouTube’s receiving status. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live; use the appropriate YouTube server and stream-key settings for your encoder rather than assuming a source playback setting will repair a transport failure.

OBS and YouTube document these diagnostic signals, but neither can name the cause in an unseen setup. The OBS log at the incident time, source properties, and YouTube’s status are needed for a case-specific diagnosis.
