If your OBS stream to YouTube keeps disconnecting, start by checking the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server—not by assuming OBS itself is broken. Compare OBS Stats and its session log with the stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room, then test upload capacity and encoder settings. The exact cause depends on what those checks show.
Find out where the failure is happening
OBS distinguishes network dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag. Dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough can lead to a disconnection. OBS’s connection guide describes intermittent disconnections or dropped frames as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024).
YouTube Live Control Room provides a separate view of stream health and may show a specific error with instructions. Check both systems at the same time: OBS helps identify what the encoder sees, while YouTube reports what it receives.
Capture evidence while the stream is failing
- In OBS, open View > Stats. Record the time of the issue and whether the statistics point to dropped frames (network), rendering lag, or encoding lag. The distinction matters: changing network settings is unlikely to fix an encoder that cannot render or encode reliably.
- Check the OBS session log. Note connection errors and their timestamps. Keep the log from the affected session so it can be compared with YouTube’s report.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room for the broadcast. Record stream health and the exact error message. YouTube says its health messages include instructions; use the message shown for your stream rather than guessing at the cause (See your live stream’s metrics).
Do not diagnose a particular cause from the word “disconnecting” alone. Compare the timestamped OBS and YouTube evidence before changing settings.

Check upload capacity and stability
A stream depends on outbound upload, not the download speed shown in a typical headline speed-test result. Run an upload-speed test while the network is in the conditions in which you normally broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate, and warns that other people or devices sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream (YouTube streaming tips).
- Compare the measured upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate, leaving the recommended headroom.
- Consider competing traffic: cloud backups, uploads, video calls, other streams, and household or office use can make available capacity vary.
- If upload speed fluctuates or the connection drops under load, repeat the test at different times and note the results. A single speed result does not establish that the connection is stable for a continuous broadcast.
If the connection cannot reliably sustain the current stream, lower the bitrate or reduce the output demands, then monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health again.

Use sustainable encoder settings
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the relevant row in YouTube’s encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate universally. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Bitrate: Set it for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use, while keeping upload headroom. If the network cannot sustain it, reduce it and test.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: Set 2 seconds; keep it at or below 4 seconds.
- Output demands: If a sustainable bitrate still coincides with rendering or encoding lag in OBS, reduce resolution or frame rate and test whether the relevant lag improves.
Change one relevant setting at a time and observe a sufficiently representative period of the broadcast. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change helped—or whether the problem merely paused.

Review OBS network settings and possible interference
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide documents several network options, but none should be treated as a guaranteed fix. Change one item at a time, test, and revert changes that do not help.
- Bind to IP: OBS recommends leaving this set to Default.
- Network Optimizations and TCP pacing: The OBS guide lists these options; TCP pacing is for Windows only. Test the relevant option where available and compare the results.
- IPv4-only: OBS documents this as a test. Revert it if it does not help; do not assume IPv4 is the cause without evidence.
- Dynamic Bitrate: This fallback can lower bitrate when network conditions worsen, but that can reduce stream quality and does not solve the underlying network problem.
Security software, VPN software, bundled network utilities, and hardware issues are also possible sources of connection trouble, according to OBS. If you test by temporarily disabling security software, treat it as a diagnostic step only; restore protection and, if the test identifies a conflict, use a narrowly scoped OBS exception rather than leaving protections off. If you use Ethernet, trying a known-good cable is a reasonable low-cost check, but a cable swap will not fix network congestion, router trouble, ISP instability, or a problem elsewhere on the route to YouTube.

Escalate with useful evidence
If OBS reports network drops and YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem, contact your ISP about outbound stability. YouTube also advises contacting the ISP when troubleshooting points to the connection (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream). Provide the timestamps, OBS log, OBS Stats observations, upload-test results, and the exact Live Control Room error. That gives support a concrete incident to investigate instead of an unsupported guess about the cause.
Protect a 24/7 broadcast against interruption and lost archives
A continuous stream has two separate continuity concerns: whether the broadcast stays live and whether a copy is preserved. YouTube recommends preparing a backup encoder and testing failover. Its suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup (Streaming tips; YouTube live streaming tips – Computer). Plan the test so an intentional interruption does not surprise viewers.

Archiving is separate from staying connected. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That warning concerns YouTube’s archive behavior; it does not mean YouTube necessarily disconnects a stream at 12 hours. For a 24/7 channel, keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy (Archive live streams).
