OBS vs FFmpeg for Streaming a Podcast Archive to YouTube 24/7

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS Studio if you want a graphical setup for looping a podcast archive and may add visual elements; choose FFmpeg if you prefer a command line and explicit, scriptable control. Both can send a stream to YouTube Live, but the available documentation does not establish a universal winner for reliability or performance. Either way, you need a computer that can run the encoder, a stable upload connection, and YouTube’s server URL and stream key.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?

Consideration OBS Studio FFmpeg
How you operate it Graphical software for capture, composition, encoding, recording and streaming. A natural fit if you want to arrange a visual scene around the podcast audio or video. OBS Project Command-line tool with explicit input and output options. Better suited to a workflow you want to configure or script directly. FFmpeg documentation
Looping an archive A Media Source can use a local file, and the source controls include a Loop option. OBS interface strings The -stream_loop -1 input option loops indefinitely. FFmpeg documentation
Visual composition Use scenes and sources when you want to combine the archive with a logo, artwork or other on-screen elements. Use when you want to specify media processing and stream output through command-line options rather than a graphical scene.
Long-run reliability Not guaranteed by the presence of a Loop control; the cited documentation does not establish uninterrupted operation. Not guaranteed by an infinite input loop; the cited documentation does not establish uninterrupted operation.

The practical choice is about control and workflow, not a proven performance ranking. No benchmark establishes which option uses fewer resources for a particular podcast file or computer. If you already have a suitable machine, a new computer is not automatically required; YouTube supports software encoders running on computers.

Prepare the YouTube Live stream

Both workflows need the same YouTube connection information: a live-stream server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to get these in YouTube Studio and how to enter them into an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share or publish it.

Use compatible output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Match the encoder output to the ingest settings YouTube shows for your stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For H.264, YouTube lists these recommended starting bitrates; they are recommendations, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps

The figures are from YouTube’s guidance, which does not display a publication year; accessed October 3, 2026. Check the current guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate and codec before configuring your encoder. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain, and run a speed test rather than assuming your advertised internet plan’s download speed represents upload capacity.

Set up a looping podcast archive in OBS

OBS is the more approachable choice if you want to see and arrange the stream’s visual output. Exact menu wording can vary by OBS version, but the core setup is a scene, a local media source with looping enabled, and YouTube streaming credentials.

  1. Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the podcast stream.
  2. Add the archive: In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Enable Local File and browse to the podcast video or audio file. If the source controls expose audio-only playback, use it for an audio archive; otherwise provide a visual source, such as a static image, if the stream needs a video picture.
  3. Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, select Loop. Confirm the file plays and restarts when it reaches its end.
  4. Set the video and audio output: In OBS Settings, configure the output resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate to match the settings you intend to send to YouTube. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where available. Keep the output within the upload connection’s sustainable capacity.
  5. Connect YouTube: In OBS Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, then connect the account or choose the stream-key option and enter the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube Studio. Do not expose the key in a screenshot or recording.
  6. Test before the continuous run: Start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate for your channel, check audio and video in YouTube Studio, and monitor stream health before making the stream public. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  7. Start streaming: When the preview and stream health look correct, start the stream in OBS and verify that the live broadcast is reaching YouTube.

Set up a looping archive with FFmpeg

FFmpeg suits a user comfortable specifying a media input, encoding choices and network output in a command. The documented infinite-loop option is -stream_loop -1. The example below illustrates the structure for a file input sent to YouTube over RTMPS; replace the placeholders with values from YouTube Studio and select a video or audio configuration appropriate to the archive.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "podcast.mp4"

  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This is an illustrative starting point, not a guaranteed fit for every file, FFmpeg build, YouTube ingest setting or connection. It encodes H.264 video at a nominal 8 Mbps and 30 fps with a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), plus AAC audio; 8 Mbps is the YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps, not a total bitrate allowance for video plus audio. To target another resolution or frame rate, adjust the output dimensions and frame rate and use the corresponding YouTube recommendation. Confirm that the input contains the streams your chosen options expect; an audio-only archive needs a video picture for a conventional YouTube video stream.

Use the RTMPS server address and stream key provided for the specific YouTube stream. Keep credentials out of public scripts, logs, screenshots and shared repositories. FFmpeg options and protocol support can differ between builds; check the installed build’s documentation if an option is rejected. An infinite input loop does not itself restart FFmpeg after a process, computer or network failure.

Test the stream and protect the archive

  • Check what viewers will hear and see: Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, listen for clipping or silence, and confirm the image is present if the archive has video.
  • Watch stream health: Monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health during the test and after going live. Lower the output quality if the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
  • Plan for interruptions: Looping repeats a file while the encoder is running; neither tool’s documented loop control guarantees recovery from a crash, power loss, computer sleep or internet outage.
  • Check rights and channel policies: You need the rights or permissions required to broadcast the podcast, music, artwork and any other included material. A technically successful stream does not establish that its content complies with YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules.
  • Keep the archive separately: YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived when the encoder stops. Its cited help page does not promise automatic archiving for streams exceeding 12 hours, so do not rely on a 24/7 broadcast as the only copy of an archive. Check the current controls in YouTube Studio for your workflow. YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect server URL or stream key, or an encoder/output connection issue. Copy the current server URL and key from the correct YouTube Studio stream settings. Check the encoder’s connection status and keep the key private.
Buffering, dropped frames or poor stream health The connection cannot sustain the chosen output bitrate, or the network is unstable. Run an upload speed test, use a lower YouTube-recommended output setting, and test again while monitoring YouTube stream health.
The archive plays once and stops Looping was not enabled or the command’s loop option is missing or misplaced. In OBS, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. In FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 as an input option before the relevant -i.
Audio is missing or the picture is blank The file’s streams do not match the selected input/output configuration, or a video stream has no usable picture source. Preview the source in OBS or inspect the FFmpeg output for input and encoding errors. For an audio-only archive, configure a video picture for the stream.
The stream stops after running for a while The encoder process, computer or connection may have failed; looping only repeats media while the encoder remains active. Check the computer, power and network, then inspect OBS or FFmpeg logs and YouTube Studio’s stream health. The cited documentation does not establish an automatic-restart setup for either program.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to stay on for the broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. • Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
