OBS vs FFmpeg for Looping Videos on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if you want a visual preview, scenes, overlays, and interactive controls. Choose FFmpeg if you want a repeatable command-line pipeline that loops a file directly. Neither is proven universally more reliable: performance depends on your computer, encoder, settings, and network. For either option, test the complete setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?

Consideration OBS FFmpeg
Setup and control Visual settings, preview, scenes, and interactive start/stop controls suit a production you want to inspect and adjust. Command-line options suit a defined pipeline you want to run from a script or service.
Looping a file Add the prerecorded video as a media source and enable its loop control in your installed OBS version. Use -stream_loop -1 before the input file’s -i option to loop that input indefinitely.
Real-time pacing OBS streams through its configured encoder workflow. Use -re (equivalent to -readrate 1) before the input when a file should be read at real-time pace.
Scenes and overlays Well suited to combining visible sources and changing scenes during a live production. Filters and stream mapping are controlled in the command line; useful for a fixed encode or relay pipeline.
Reliability and performance Must be checked on the actual computer, with the intended sources, settings, and network. Must be checked on the actual computer, with the intended sources, settings, and network. No fair head-to-head benchmark establishes an advantage.

These are workflow differences, not evidence that either tool uses less CPU or will run longer without interruption. FFmpeg’s online manual describes its current options; the installed build may differ, so verify it when deploying. OBS’s general YouTube guide is older: use YouTube’s current guidance and the controls shown in your installed OBS version for operational details.

Prepare YouTube Live before configuring the encoder

  1. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the current event and broadcast settings, including whether a scheduled stream requires a separate action to go live. Connecting the encoder does not necessarily make a scheduled event public.
  2. Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP, for streaming to YouTube Live. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and current encoder settings guidance.
  3. Copy the stream key into the encoder and keep it secret. The key connects the encoder output to the broadcast; treat it as a credential. Never publish it in a command, screenshot, or public configuration.
  4. Match encoding settings to YouTube’s current table. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, or AV1 support for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select bitrate for the intended resolution using YouTube’s live bitrate table and the upload capacity available to you; those recommendations vary by resolution and may change.
  5. Test representative content. Check video motion, audio, and the handoff from the end of the file back to its beginning. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test and while live.

Loop a video with FFmpeg

Command structure

This is a structural example, not a complete tested command. Replace the input path and output URL with your own, and add encoding, audio, and muxing options appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current requirements.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [encoding and audio options] -f flv rtmps://.../live2/STREAM_KEY

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Both -re and -stream_loop are input options, so place them before the corresponding -i. Output options belong before the output URL. The -f flv output format is shown as part of the RTMP-style command structure; confirm the format and settings appropriate to your chosen YouTube ingest endpoint and installed FFmpeg build. Do not expose a real stream key.

Set and verify the encode

  • Choose a supported video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, pixel format, and keyframe interval that match YouTube’s current guidance and your source.
  • Set constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval where your encoder permits it, and compatible audio such as AAC or MP3.
  • Map the intended audio and video streams explicitly if the file has multiple tracks or unusual stream layout. Confirm both are present in the output.
  • Check the installed FFmpeg build’s help output and test the exact command. The online manual can describe options absent from or changed in a particular build.

Loop a video with OBS

  1. Configure YouTube as the service. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube/YouTube RTMPS or connect your YouTube account. If entering a stream key, copy it from Live Control Room and keep it private. OBS’s guide covers the broad setup workflow: Streaming with OBS Studio.
  2. Add the video. Create or select a scene, add the prerecorded file as a media source, and confirm the source is visible and its audio is routed as intended.
  3. Enable looping in the media source. Find the loop control in the installed OBS version’s source properties and verify it is enabled. UI labels can change, so check the current interface rather than relying on an old guide for an exact control path.
  4. Set output and encoder settings. Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio format consistent with YouTube’s current guidance. Preview the scene and confirm that overlays and other sources behave as intended.
  5. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test and inspect Live Control Room. Verify the encoder connects, audio and video arrive, stream health is acceptable, and the scheduled broadcast’s public go-live state is correct before relying on it.

What to monitor during a long loop

  • Loop boundary: Watch a full end-to-start transition. A black frame, audio gap, abrupt cut, or missing track may be present even if the rest of the file plays correctly.
  • Stream health: Check YouTube Live Control Room for connection warnings, dropped frames, or other messages. A successful encoder start alone does not establish that viewers receive a healthy stream.
  • Computer and network: Test the chosen encoder, resolution, audio, and connection on the actual host. Documentation does not establish that OBS or FFmpeg is inherently more reliable for your particular setup.
  • Broadcast state: For scheduled streams, confirm the current Live Control Room state and any separate go-live action instead of assuming that starting the encoder makes the event public.
  • Rights and channel policies: Use video and audio you have permission to stream. Repeating prerecorded material does not itself establish that it complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s monetization policies; review the policies applicable to your channel and content before broadcasting.

Common problems and fixes

FFmpeg loops too quickly or finishes unexpectedly

Confirm -stream_loop -1 is before the input’s -i, and that it applies to the intended file. For real-time output from a file, place -re before that input too. Verify option support in your installed build.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Check the ingest URL and stream key against Live Control Room, ensure the key has not been revoked or mistyped, and confirm that the encoder is using the intended RTMPS configuration. Treat the key as private; replace it in YouTube if it has been exposed.

Stream health reports problems

Compare the encoder’s codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with YouTube’s current guidance. Use the resolution-specific bitrate table rather than a detached bitrate figure, and test whether the upload connection can sustain the chosen output.

There is no audio, or the loop transition is rough

Check source audio routing or FFmpeg stream mapping, then listen to a complete loop boundary. Confirm the file actually contains the expected audio track and test any transition rather than assuming the repeated playback is seamless.

The encoder is connected but the scheduled event is not live

Check the event’s status and instructions in Live Control Room. Depending on the scheduled stream and current settings, connecting the encoder and making the broadcast live can be separate steps.
